It's really an awesome movie, and I can't help but thinking over the end. Would you be able to make such a decision?

well to me i dun see it so much as a sad ending but as a fitting conclusion to the show itself. for me what really struck me was the powerful message behind it when the show finally unravels near the end, and you are left stun on how powerful love for someone can be to give you strength to make the decision Aio made. the show was also exceptionally beautiful with its simple cinematography with no over-the-top richness or effect, kinda apt for the overall theme.

still plucking up courage and time to watch it a second time=)

The movie was awesome but for the drama version it fell far short of expectation. Mainly i think it is due to the selection of unsuitable actor and actress for the 2 main characters for the show. Shake Head

that's true, even though I didn't see the movie yet, the MOST thing I liked about the drama is that the teenager version of the main characters looked ALMOST like those actors...and I thought it was adorable...the boy is so adorable!!! and the girl is becoming quite famous now, first in Kinpachi, then Ame to Yume no Atoni, and now this!

SPOILERS

let me get this straight...mio in the "real" timeline never actually falls in love with takumi. she has a motorcycle accident which renders her unconscious. it is here when she is a vegetable but time travels 8 years (drama) in the future to the mountain top where she falls in love actually for the first time with takumi and the son. this is why she doesnt remember anything.
at the end of the six weeks, she has to return to her real body in the hospital to the present/past and is given a choice: she can find takumi where she will fall in love and give birth to the son which causes her death or any other life. she picks of course takumi and son thus ensuring her death but also her happiness and hope. things come full circle: she becomes the mom/wife that she doesnt remember being in the future.

gawd dang thats some tricky stuff! i hate hate hate 11th hour gimmicks like this. the drama wasnt really that great on episode to episode basis. but the gimmick does give each episode more resonance now that i think about it. so yeah, not too bad.

SPOILER ALERT !!!!

I watched the movie version but not the drama, and my interpretation (of the translation) is as follows:

Mio has always been in love with Takumi (from the contents of her diary) but was thrown off when Takumi rejected her. When she had the accident she 'traveled' 9 years into the future etc. When she came out of her coma she had chosen to seek Takumi out and live out her life, knowing she's going to die after 8 years.

From the story's point of view then her 'return' was a result of her being transported into the future, and that she is flesh-and-blood, not a ghost. In any case she did fell in love with Takumi, ever since she laid eyes on him in high school. That she decided to take up this particular timeline, instead of finding someone else and thereby possibly prolonging her life, was because she had this experience in the future and realized she loved Takumi and Yoji.

It's a real twister, but also the reason why this movie/drama is so adorable. IMHO.

Yeah, thtl, you're pretty much on track. Some people think the "twist" at the end is overkill, butI like the twist, though. I mean, it was as good enough without it, but the twist makes it a really great movie.

thx lordmanji bcuz the answer of the drama's ending
when i finished it, many question marks twisting in my brain but now it's CLEAR
i love the drama version mayb bcuz i like Narimiya
when i c the comment of the drama b4 i watch it some said that it's not suitable 4 Narimiya act as a father of a 7-year-old son.
but i think it's not the problem
i think that Narimiya and Mimura did a gd job in that drama
This is the drama that interesting, full of love but not boring
please don feel sleepy 2 watch it

I managed to get my hands on a Chinese translation of the book, and read it in one go. I must say the movie was a fairly accurate adaptation of the book, with only minor changes. In a way I'm glad I saw the movie before reading the book. The book filled in some gaps, and presented a more complete picture of the lifes of Mio and Takumi. If I had done it the other way round I'll probably complain about the movie losing some of the minor details, and changing some of the characters. As it is the images of the movie's cast keep popping up in my head while I was reading, lending more 'realism' to the story.

Kudos to the casting director - the grown-up and teenage versions of Takumi and Mio were so similar it's uncanny.

I personally prefer the drama as I watched the drama before the movie so somehow it affected my movie experience. The "twist" in the end is something i never expected but it certainly make the drama/movie special and give a memorable sweet-bitter ending.

I'll certainly give the drama a go if I can get my hands on a DVD set. I'd expect a lot more detail in the drama. Do you know if it sticks to the book or branches out a lot with side-plots?

I saw the movie a while back. I thought it was good and I admit that I got a little misty-eyed. Puppy Dog Eyes Sweet, sweet Yuko Takeuchi...

I need to re-watch the movie, but I think it's some sort of mental panic disorder. That's why he doesn't surround himself with other people or else he'll freak out, and also he can't exert himself too much.

Sorry for going off topic a bit. DougFunnieee, are you a Swing Girls fan in general, or a Mizuta Fumiko fan in particular?
