asians in the netherlands are mostly accepted because we/asians don't bring much trouble..
okay if we do have a fight they'll scream chinese.. [you know in a bad way] even if you're asian like japan, korean they'll call you chinese because they think people with little eyes are chinese.. uhm not.. but hey asians call dutch people cheesehead.. but its not really hate.. its just when there is a fight.. people call names..

it's good to hear dutch residents as yourself speak up because you are providing us some clarity and education on this whole matter...given the fact you are the most qualified to address the topic.

thanks.

in a way, the netherlands is not different in anywhere in other places in the world. there are going to be dunmba$$'s whereever you go. the thing is sometimes they are just hating because they just don't know.

I'm living in the metro DC area and asians are fairly/easily accepted. I remember traveling thru Ohio about 7 or 8 yrs back with my girl to get to our friends house in michigan, and stopped by like a hardee's (hamburger place).

EVERYONE was just staring at us like we just stepped out of our spaceship. (well I DID have a silver/grey Honda then). We were sitting down and this kid (must not have been 5 yet) behind us just stared at us with his mouth wide open. Now mind you i could have smacked the crap outta this kid b/c he was just making us (actually just my girl, who had just came to america at that time) feel really uncomfortable. I opt for option B and cracked some corny joke to ease the tension. The mom then told her son to please sit down. I then overheard her talking to her mom something to the effect of "wow, some of them CAN speak english". I didn't notice any sarcasm in her hushed voice, i guess it's just that all the CHNses people that she knew about prolly didn't have the best command of the english language. Looking back, at that time i was a little bit bothered by that comment, but then i realized that they just don't know any bettter.

***********************************************************

Another example is when I was just FOB from HK way back in the early 80's, didn't speak a lick of american english. Never even saw a white person, so when i saw a black person (actually there were a lot of blacks in my elem. school growing up in miami, fla) i was REALLY mesmorized. I was sitting behind roger (who later became one of my best friends) who is black, and since i never saw that kind of hair, i kept poking at the back of his head just thinking to myself "wow, can people have these type of hair?"

Next thing i knew he spun around punched me on the head and then as were fighting I realized the he probably didn't like that i was poking at his head., and i was in the wrong. I just didn't know any better.

It's not just in the netherlands, there are many people out there are just ignorant. Mr Green

i love the story my filipino friend told me about her brother and his wife stopping somewhere in florida during a road trip from chicago to disney world in orlando...when they walked into the wendy's to get something to eat the place stopped and one little white kid came up to them and asked my friend's brother,

"are you one of those chinamen?"

true story...

chinamen no less...not even chinese or asian....i love the south....eternally enlightened place of darkness.

even at work yesterday, this lady co-worker about early 60's (very nice lady, just ignorant) we were talking about the world cup and she walked up to our conversation and she asked "hey niko who are YOU rooting for, China?"

I mean, even tho i'm chinese (from HK) i can say I have visited china once. but other than that, even IF china qualified for the World Cup, i can honestly say I wouldn't root for someone else.

That is f*cked up....but dood there is rampant racism throughout Europe....they aren't as englightened as one might think...

now that was funny... the racism in Europe is the same as in the rest of the world... are you trying to say there's no racism in america? well I'd like to see THAT..

btw dont such things as yelling things about bananas and goign back to Africa dont happen e.g. to black athletes in the US? (as in soccer etc) cause you mentioned it so many times I'd think you'd never heard about something like that before..

of course there is racism....but

NO they don't yell racist slogans to black athletes in america..they don't make monkey noises...they don't take nazi flags into sporting arenas...they don't chant white supremacist slogans....they don't throw peanuts on the field and they don't spit on athletes either....

if that actually happened in the US it would be all over the news....

one example

RACISM IN SOCCER

Player Silences German Racists With Hitler Salute

Mired in betting scandals, riven by infighting and alarmed by recent poor performances on the pitch, German soccer needs anything but more controversy in the few months remaining before it hosts the World Cup. But some recent cases of blatant racism are doing further damage to its image.

SPIEGEL ONLINE
Nigerian player Adebowale Ogungbure, of fourth division FC Sachsen Leipzig is sick of racist abuse against him at matches.
It started with a Hitler salute. Two eastern German soccer teams in the fourth division, FC Sachsen Leipzig and Hallesche FC, had just drawn 2-2 on March 25 in Halle, and the fans weren't happy.

Leipzig's Nigerian midfielder Adebowale Ogungbure was walking off the pitch when hooligans ran up to him, spat at him and called him "Dirty Nigger," "Shit Nigger" and "Ape." He ignored it and walked on. Then, when he passed the main stand and heard fans making whooping monkey noises at him, he decided he'd had enough. He put two fingers above his mouth to symbolise a Hitler moustache and stuck out his right arm in a Nazi salute to the crowd.

Given their behavior, one might think they would have appreciated the gesture and even returned it. But a Halle supporter attacked him from behind with a corner flag and another grabbed him in a stranglehold. Ogungbure pushed them away as a teammate intervened and dragged him towards the tunnel, to the safety of the changing rooms.

"I was just so angry, I didn't care. I could have been killed but I had to do something," Ogungbure told SPIEGEL ONLINE last week. "I thought to myself, what can I do to get them as angry as they have made me? Then when I lifted my arm I saw the anger in their faces and I started to laugh."

"I've faced some sort of racist abuse at about half the matches I've played," he said, but the spitting was too much on March 25. "I've never seen anyone spit at a dog or a cat in Germany -- why should I be spat at?"

The story took a grotesque turn when Ogungbure was charged with "unconstitutional behavior" for making the Hitler salute, which is illegal in Germany. The public prosecutor's office wisely dropped proceedings within 24 hours. But the incident made nationwide headlines and spurred a flurry of reports suggesting racist abuse is rife in the lower leagues where crowds are smaller and fewer police are present.

Rolf Heller, president of FC Sachsen Leipzig, played down the incident and said it was an isolated case. "This has nothing whatsoever to do with right wing extremism, it is just misguided fervor on the part of the fans," he said. Ogungbure said he informed Heller long ago about the hostility he faces. His answer: "They only want to wind you up."

rofl

So my buddy just got back from Australia and New Zealand...

got a quick recap, since im at work, and he's gotta pack for our camping trip tomorrow...

Basically, we've figured that Europeans are ultra-nationalists... he met up with european friends on his cousin, and all they did was talk up their own country... the swiss guys got offended and almost got into a fight w/ him because he called them Swiss-Italians instead of Italian speaking Swiss... i mean seriously, coming to blows because of that? Silly I say.

Oh, and my favorite quip was when he told me about his trip to a yakuniku place, and the Brits were cracking "buck teeth slant eyed asian dog jokes" at the staff there...

i mean come on..

I realize that not all people are like this, but this is the face that's being presented by these particular people.

I used to live in Amsterdam, never ever had problems with racism whatsoever. The only tourists I hate are those drunk brits. I've never ran into nazis in public either...

haha I live near Amsterdam XD and go there every week.. it's kinda weird for me to hear that kind of stuff about discriminating ( unless its muslim ) Bonk But I'm that kinda girl who enjoys seeing tourist taking pictures or with those big backpacks and maps rofl I think a lot of the people in Amsterdam really don't pay attention to tourists anymore
