i hate to say, but i feel that most dorama actor/esses get type casted and stuck in one role. so if you dont like them in one dorama, most likely you wont like them in another, cause they'll be acted in a similar way.

That's my point . I didn't like her character in Good Luck and I think she acted the same way with her role in Orange Days as well . Don't get me wrong, I didn't say she can't act . It's just that she's type-casted as Krim said. Her meany face in both Good Luck/ Orange Days really annoyed the heck out of me . To tell the truth, when I watched Orange Days, after the 5th episode, I fast forward whenever her face showed up . I think that's why I didn't appreciate the drama as everyone else does.

Yes, exactly.

This is why I believe the casting directors have a really hard job. I mean, not everyone can be fans of everyone, and so no matter who they pick for the role, they'll gain some viewers, and lose some viewers. This is the first drama I've seen her in, so I had nothing else to compare her too. She was pretty decent, but she didn't appeal to me enough for me to vote for her or anything.

No matter how brilliant the character is, if you don't like the actress/actor, the role is ruined for you.

I think the drama overall was really good. I try not to let actors/actresses I don't like ruin the rest of the show for me, but I suppose for some this can't be helped. Victory! Peace!

I think Kou has basically been typecast since Battle Royale she was so scary in that, maybe they don't think she can do anything "lighter"

and I liked all her ice princess roles. Maybe I'm weird, but I like girls who can kick some ass and have a dash of mean streak, sarcarsm and vulnerablity in them. It makes them more real, even if flawed. I'd prefer to watch them anytime over girls who can only look cutesy and girly waiting for their knight in shining armour to rescue them. Battle Royale, Good Luck and Orange Days turned me into a die hard Kou fan. Now, that's my kinda girl! hehe

As for the roles she acted in which I didn't like, well I didn't care for the One Missed Call and Crying Out Love in the Center of the World movies. Kou played a rather demure and softer person in Crying Out Loud (more typical of Jdrama leading ladies), but her role there didn't really appeal to me. Or maybe I just didn't like that movie much overall. On the other hand, I loved her quirky characters in Go and Maison De Himiko. Nice movies. I find that Kou has quite a range, and a mysteriously charismatic appeal. I don't really agree that she acts "the same" in every role but then again, she's one of my fave j-actresses. Twisted Another actress I adore is Ueno Juri, who seems to be the younger version of Kou. Wheareas I don't understand the fascination with Ryoko Hirosue and Aya Ueto. I find them too cutesy.

I guess some actresses have a broader appeal like Nakama Yukie, because I've not yet heard anyone say that they dislike her. Even if you're not a fan of Yukie, you won't feel particularly strong like or dislike towards her. She brings on a neutral to mild general positive feeling. Actresses like Kou belong to the "hate her or love her" category. She elicits strong feelings from viewers, whether it's intense like or dislike. That's my take on it.

Anyway, shouldn't we be discussing Kou at her thread? Orange Days rocks! Mr Green

first of all, i'm so glad that you're Kou's fan and you don't get pissed off by her non-fan people Applaud. Other than that, I have to disagree with you .

I'm a girl, not a teen though Mr Green So I don't like cutesy girls either . Then you can't say that I don't like her because I like other cute female stars . In fact, I love actresses who acted in cold-hearted roles, or even viliant roles. I rate actors by their acting not by their look. Guess what ? I think Kou's look helped her acting. Have you noticed her eyes ? She has the eyes that make her look mean . Furthermore, it prevents her to act cute.

That's why I have the same feeling whenever I see her face, no matter how great she acts. IMO, she acts well, but she acts in characters that somehow has the same personallity . I've just seen her in 2 dramas and I've noticed that already. In Good Luck!, a strong-head, stubborn woman. In Orange Days, a hot-temper college girl, sometimes unreasonable. I watched Good Luck first, I didn't like it because of her. Then when I see Orange Days' poster and the cast, I was thinking whether I should watch it because I saw her name in the cast . But I've seen people wrote sush great reviews for Orange Days so I gave it a try. Guess what ? I still didn't convinced by Kou's acting but I like Konishi Manami's acting (although this is the first time I see her and she acts a minor role in Orange Days) and Tsumabuki Satoshi (although I didn't like his acting in Lunch Queen but I guess he grew on me)

I think it's ok for me to discuss about Kou in this thread but not in her thread because her thread is for a fans and I have to respect that . Overall, I'm just stating why I didn't like Orange Days. It's because I didn't enjoy Kou's acting (or you could say her character/role) so I didn't enjoy Orange Days as everybody (because she acted that MAIN character) .

Sweat hope I didn't offend anyone . Just want to state my thoughts.

i don't eat much fruit, a bad habit of mine, but watermelon is bombay....and it's good for you...the red pigment in the fruit contains lycopene which is a powerful phytonutrient that helps protect against certain degenerative diseases such as cancer.

And a certain quantity of watermelon is equal to one cup out of the eight required for daily intake Victory! Peace!

Nah, other people's preference in actresses doesn't bother me. But this is a discussion thread no? And I can't say that I agree with you either. Smile

Quote:

Where did I state not liking Kou= liking cutesy stars? I think you misunderstood me. I'm only stating my own preference, that I prefer Kou over cutesy actresses. That's just me. No where did I assume that you liked them. I brought up the cutesy actress to illustrate that, in a forrest of daffodils, Kou is a poison ivy. Ok, bad analogy, lol. But you get what I mean, I hope... Bonk

Hmm. Aren't you contradicting yourself here? If you rate actors by their acting and not their look, why do you dislike Kou because of her fierce looking eyes (or in your words, mean looks)? It's not like she can change her features. Unless she goes for plastic surgery. Shake Head

You've only seen her in two dramas and already you draw the conclusion that she acts the same in every role? Isn't that too early to judge? Believe me, Kou has played other characters besides the hot-tempered, unreasonable girls. But then again, if you think she has a mean face, none of her other roles will be convincing for you, whether she acts good or not.

But I don't blame you because, the roles that brought Kou to stardom are Battle Royal and Orange Days. Maybe she was too convincing in these roles that viewers have a hard time getting rid of this image of her. Not that Kou needs to change her image. There are more than enough actresses who can play the demure type roles. Kou doesn't have to be good in every type of role. Like I said earlier, there are enough actresses with different types of appeal to go around for everyone. Naughty

In my opinion, everyone in Orange Days did a great job, from the leads to the supporting cast. Konishi Manami played her role well and Tsumabuki Satoshi was excellent. As for Kou, she was splendid. Even those who are not her particular fans give her that. If you think she was not convincing in her role as a deaf girl, then I am speechless. What is a convincing deaf performance then? Really, enlighten me.

Well, it's okay that you dislike Orange Days. But if you've stated a stronger argument for why the drama didn't work for you, other than just vocalising your strong dislike of Kou, then it would have made for a better discussion in this thread. That's all. Also, if you think about it, the people who visit this thread frequently are probably Orange Days fans. So you might want to share your likes and dislikes in a general series thread if you didn't want to sound like a wet blanket. But hey, freedom of speech and everything... lol
