I dropped by the Asahiya in Torrance and wandered around for a while, but I didn't find a single thing... Sad I did buy some gyoza and senbei before I left, though. Big Grin

There was a cart near the entrance of the Mitsuwa marketplace that had a bunch of CDs for sale, like 50% off or something... There were a couple of cool Japanese history books and encyclopedias, but the selection of books and magazines is smaller than that of Kinokuniya... I'll drop by again next month, when the new mags show up...

Most places only rent. There should be some around Sawtelle.

Good luck.

I know Book Off in Gardena has a decent selection. It's south of LAX so it's not exactly in Santa Monica. They have tapes and DVDs. Most of these are used so they're really cheap, but it's really hard to get complete series.

Asahi Book Shop in the Mitsuwa Plaza shopping mall in Little Tokyo in Downtown LA is closing the store permanently at the end of the month. Until then, all items in the store, including music CDs and English-language books on Japan, are on sale at 30% off.

CORRECTION

It's up to 40% off now. I was just there and bought a few copies of the Golgo 13 manga. They're desperate to get rid of all their inventory, and rumor is that by next week--and final week-- it will be 50% off.

The one in Torrance is closer to me anyways. That's too bad. That store had a bigger selection of stuff. I thought business in Little Tokyo was picking up with all of the new construction projects and stuff, but I guess it wasn't good enough.

There's competition in Little Tokyo from Kinokuniya Book Shop in the Weller Court Bldg and Japan Book Shop inside the Japanese Village mall. Until about a year ago there was an Asahi Book Shop in the Mitsuwa Plaza in Santa Monica but it also failed and closed. I don't think it was a well-managed store.

I'll go back next week to get more Golgo 13 manga. At 50% off it'll be cheaper than buying the same book at a used book store.

This is sad news. Sad I guess I'll have to swing by and pick up a few things. The bookstore will be missed.
