The Giants-Packers game pitted two even teams which was evident since it had to go to sudden death. Of the four QB's who played yesterday, Eli Manning had the best performance imo. He's really matured during the second half of the season. I hope the Giants will play their best in the Super Bowl in order to make the game interesting.
The Patriots proved yet again that they are the best team this year. The Chargers battled them tough, but came up short at the end. San Diego's impotence in the red zone both on offense and defense hurt them, while New England's efficiency near the goal line on both sides of the ball proved to be the difference in the ballgame.
Another factor was kicker Nate Kaeding's inability to get the ball deep; the Pats got excellent field position every time the Chargers kicked off. And even when the Pats didn't score, they were able to win the field position battle by pinning the Chargers deep in their territory.
While the Chargers' defense made a lot of good plays, I was very disappointed in their inability to scheme against the Pats' formation and situation tendencies in crucial parts of the game.
Philip Rivers showed courage in playing hurt, and he did make some good throws, but he also threw two costly interceptions.
A lot of Chargers fans are bemoaning the fact that San Diego had to play the game with Rivers, LT, Antonio Gates, Lorenzo Neal and Jamal Williams all hurting, but to trot out two cliches--injuries are part of the game, and you play the hand you're dealt with.
Patriots star Brady photographed in walking cast 2 weeks before Super Bowl
January 22, 2008
NEW YORK (AP) -- Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was photographed Monday with what appears to be walking cast on his right foot.
The Boston Herald and Boston Globe had the photos -- credited to infphoto.com -- on their Web sites. A video of Brady walking with a slight limp from an SUV to girlfriend Gisele Bundchen's apartment in New York is available on TMZ.com.
The Patriots beat San Diego 21-12 on Sunday and play the New York Giants in the Super Bowl in two weeks.
"Ah, you know, there's always bumps and bruises. I'll be ready for the Super Bowl," Brady said Monday during his weekly radio appearance on WEEI -- before the photo and video emerged -- when asked if his leg was injured. "I'm not worried about that. I'm not missing this one. I'd have to be on a stretcher to miss this one. There will be treatment this week. In games like this, you get a little nicked up. It's nothing serious."
Patriots spokesman Stacey James wrote in an e-mail to the AP late Monday night that the team had no comment on the photos.
Brady threw three interceptions against the Chargers in one of the worst performances of what has been a record-breaking season for him. Brady has started in 124 consecutive games, the third longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history.

I'd like to boot Brady. But, having said that, if the Pats win, we're witnessing something we'll probably never see again. It's been 35 years since the last time it happened. And if some team makes a serious run at going undefeated somewhere down the road, a lot of the people that are knocking the Pats now will be saying, "Ah, don't talk about these guys, I saw the 2007 New England Patriots, now THAT was a football team!"
I hope the UCLA faithful don't expect miracles in 2008...
I would think the UCLA faithful would expect significant improvement over this past year.
An early indication would be signing date in Feb. Can Neuheisel, Chow, and co. go head to head with the recruiting machine that Pete Carroll has in place across town?
No one--not Howard Jones, John McKay, or John Robinson--has been as productive a recruiter as Pete Carroll has been at USC, and that's saying a lot because those former Trojan head coaches were masterful recruiters.
Neuheisel is a proven recruiter--he got players both at Colorado and Washington--and Chow brings a credible feeling of opportunity for those youngsters who seek to play in the NFL. They'll be going after the same players SC is pursuing in talent-rich Southern California. If the Bruin staff can sway some of the top-flight talent who have been leaning towards committing to SC to come to Westwood, it will be a positive early sign for UCLA.

That'll be a tough task.
It's the reverse for the basketball programs, interestingly.
Nobody does want to coach for him. That's how Lane Kiffin got the job in the first place.
Me? I love Big Al.
Al Davis doesn't take sh*t from anyone, including the NFL mucky-mucks, and doesn't give a sh*t what others think of him. He deservedly should take much of the credit for the decades of success the Raiders had. And he and the late Lamar Hunt were largely responsible for making the AFL a viable alternative league which ultimately forced a merger that led to the NFL becoming the most dominant sport in America. However, sadly, he has also been overseeing one of the great collapses of a pro franchise in recent history.
Why Al Davis would have hired Lane Kiffin in the first place is baffling. Just because daddy Monte is one of the best coaches in the NFL doesn't mean sonny Lane will be too. And Kiffin's job performance at USC didn't warrant the jump to NFL head coach.

I would have had a quiet day watching the commercials and hoping for a good game... but I have a new neighbor. Good guy. From New Hampshire. So he's a devoted Patriots fan.
Naturally, since I'm going over to watch the game at his house... I'll have to root for the Giants. _________________
