*blink blink* Am I missing something? His drama hasn't done THAT bad from what I can see...I mean, sure it's not 15+, but at least it's not like Lotto 6's numbers. I guess we'll have to see... (not to mention I'll need to check that one out, it flew under my radar).

It's not that bad, but it's probably still way below expectation for the studio. Although most series seem to rate below expectations nowadays.

I didn't expect Koizora's first episode to rate that low. Read that Seigi no Mikata is being cut to 9 episodes due to low ratings(doesn't seem that low to me). Sad Koizora most likely will be cut as well.

Taiyo no Umi is in the Fuji TV Monday 9pm timeslot, which is known for showing popular, high quality dramas. the series on that timeslot are always expected to top the ratings,eg Change, Bara no nai Hanaya, Galileo.

im expecting more from Taiyo because its another collaboration of Oda Yuji and screenwriter Sakamoto Yuji. their previous hits were Tokyo Love Story and Last Christmas, which is one of my favorites. Sakamoto was also behind the critically acclaimed school drama, Watashitachi no Kyokasho, so i thought Taiyo will be as good.

also, Taiyo is the debut of producer Murase Ken who just moved to Fuji. he was from NTV and his last production there was 14 sai no haha.

This season's ratings do seem to suck big time.

It's proportional to the quality of the dramas aired, apparently. Beaten

I wish I could have the same joking feeling, but unfortunately I'm just flat-out frustrated. I want some quality to come back into the shows released, at least give us a good romance drama or something instead of these poorly scripted and casted shows that we've had all year.

Quick, someone name a series in 2008 that you'd consider a future classic. (By normal human standards! Anyone who mentions Gokusen 3 will be dragged out into the middle of the square and 'made as an example!' Beaten )

That's not to say I haven't liked certain shows this year, but there just hasn't been anything of good substance in a while. The only things that have been in the 8+ range for me were the Nodame SP, the ProDai SP, and MAYBE Tomorrow.

Ashita no Kita Yoshio!!! Well, to me anyway. Probably Bara even though I only gave it an 8. And CHANGE. From this season, no clue.

Regarding Tomorrow. IMO this is in no way going to be a classic. To put it kindly, I feel this show is a hack medical melodrama. I feel about it Tomorrow, the same way I did about Iryu 2. High expectations that were never met. Tomorrow is only halfway finished but I can't see this show making a turnaround.

And if you take ratings to mean something ( which I don't ) every indication is that viewers are in agreement. The ratings have dropped steadily with every episode.

I can't see there will be more than one classic drama this year, if one even surfaces. I liked Daisuki! and Around 40 was okay but nowhere near classic status. If things continue to progress as they are Gonzo will be my favorite drama of the year, but I guess that's because I usually like crime / police dramas.

It's actually next on my list, it's fun enough juggling around 6-7 dramas at a time, I put that one on standby. Not exactly the highest expectations for it either way...

As for Tomorrow, that's why I gave it a 'maybe' on an 8+, but I wouldn't dare say that it nor even any of the SPs this year so far could be labeled as classic (okay, MAYBE the Nodame SP, but I felt it could've done better).

I'm just harsh on my ratings for a reason: the Japanese KNOW how to write compelling and fantastic drama, there's a reason why I am a frequent poster on a site dedicated to the very genre!

I've got four executioners on standby to run cycling shifts for this very purpose (I'm looking at YOU Ryo fans! hehe ).

Great! I would LOVE to know a non-fan review on it. Its going great right now although at times it felt a bit anime like (Death Note) and over use of the creep factor... not an actual complain really Sweat. I can't lable this as a classic just because its a remake of an excellent Korean drama although the Japanese take on it sure is entertaining as hell. Will wait patiently for your thoughts on it. Victory! Peace!

but Ryo wasn't in Gokusen! Was he really that bad in Last Friends that people has now forgotten his performance as Asou-kun? Head Scratch
I'm crossing my fingers for him in Ryusei no Kizuna.. now that one is a potential classic.

Let us count the ways.... A lot of the blame has to go to the writers and production staff as well, since they sold their souls to the devil for ratings.

Although very few of them were overwhelmingly amazing, I was thinking it was starting to get better again...
I personally liked first 2 seasons of 2008 a lot more than 2006 or 2007.

"Daisuki!!" for me was even better than "1L no Namida".

I think all the stations this summer are saving their best material to avoid wasting a good script/cast, when everyone's thinking about the Olympics.

Traditionally, summer is the weakest dorama season and lowest ratings. I wouldn't worry about it hehe
