I don't think he is. I haven't seen every episode, but IIRC some episodes here had them and some didn't. Kind of hit and miss. I'm thinking the station might have edited them out so they could stuff in some more commercials. Grumble

I have a question about the Atsuhime episodes that Ralph is recording and the ones being uploaded at D-addicts: Do they air historical information at the end of each episode or has it been edited out? I'm just wondering because the ones that are aired in Hawaii have about a minute of historical information at the end of each episode that shows what the places that were shown in Atsuhime looks like in its current state. I didn't notice this at the end of Ralph's recordings nor the D-addicts ones.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This is aired aired after episode 35: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=S0H30BPA

They only had them for the first few episodes.
Then they cut them out so they could have more advertising.

I would never edit them out as they added so much to understanding how much the Japanese people honored them. I can't understand how UTB can be so crass as to substitute more commercials for them.

Yeah, I didn't think you would. Otherwise why would you leave some in?

I remember they had those at the end of every episode of Shinsengumi and they were very informative. Sometimes they were the best part of the episode. Beaten

I remember the Musashi episodes had those little informative historical footnotes at the end of each episode as well... But never on the discs I received. Sweat

In SF, I think they aired them for this drama. In year's past, it was almost a crapshoot.

If you receive TV Japan, then you get the whole enchilada.

She accedes to the highest rank in Ooku, the inner palace of the Edo castle where women related to the reigning shogun resided. Iesada dies soon after their marriage and Atsuhime assumes the name Tenshoin at the age of 23. She exerts herself for the Tokugawa clan and for the nation during the upheaval in the Meiji Restoration, headed by those from Satsuma. In 1835, Shimazu Tadatake, head of the Imaizumi-Shimazu family of Satsuma clan, and Oyuki are blessed with a long-awaited daughter, Okatsu, who later becomes Atsuhime. She grows up as a tomboy, full of wonders, yet warm-hearted. Meanwhile, as Satsuma clan is under going financial reform, headed by chief retainer Zusho, Tadatake is punished for being lenient with farmers. Okatsu, unable to absorb why her father is punished, charges over to Zusho.

Cast

Heroine

* Miyazaki Aoi as Atsu-hime

Atsuhime... best Taiga drama ever and Aoi Miyaszaki and the rest of the casts were brilliant, plus the costume and music were fantastic! Worth to watch!!!

Now that the final episode is history, I will be going thru serious withdrawal for weeks. And I surely will watch many of the episodes over and over. I cannot express enough how impressed I am with this incredible work of True Art. The acting, scenery, costumes and story line are all majestic and will garner many more viewers thru the years. Aoi chan now has to rank with the top artists not only in Japan but the entire cinematic world.

I just realised that Matsuzaka Keiko, who plays Ikushima in Atsu-hime, played Nakama Yukie's mother-in-law in Erai Tokoro ni Totsuide Shimatta!

Probably one of the best bits of that show Smile

Finally finished!

My review got really long so I wasn't able to go on and on about how amazing Aoi-chan was. Doh!

Review: 8/10

So I fell asleep quite a bit while watching this drama. Although it was quite lovely to look at and although I absolutely adore Aoi-chan, the story dragged a bit during those middle episodes.

That being said, I must say that Ifm awfully glad I watched this drama. Firstly, it taught me so much about Court life and about Japanese history. It was amusing to realize just how much I had picked up from this drama when I visited the castles in Japan and was able to answer the questions posed by the tour guide. ^_^

Secondly, I was able to experience Matsuzaka Keiko. Where has she been all my life?! It was the strangest sensation feeling so devastated when her character, Ikushima, left Atsu-Himefs service – and then feeling this flood of joy when she returned numerous episodes later. The bond that is formed between Atsu-Hime and the women in the Ooku is truly infectious and I felt camaraderie between them and myself.

Thirdly, I love Taigafs because of the various faces that cross the screen. It was so refreshing to see the different actors and actresses pop up without me expecting them.

And finally, the drama was simply aesthetically pleasing.

I was really affected by the plot and the character of Atsu-Hime – so much so that I tried to look her up in historical literature to learn more about her.

All-in-all, although boring at times, I would still invest the billion hours to watch this show again.
