I think that the issue with contacts being worn overnight is that the surface of your eye needs to breathe. My doc showed me once. If you wear your contacts too much, you start growing weird new veins in your eyes.

But he gave me these really thick lenses that are hard to take out without scratching my eye. I don't see how this is better.

Tell your doctor that you don't like those lenses and explain why. Communication is the key; if you stay silent, how will he know?

^ That's why I prefer daily wear lenses: I take 'em out at night.

And besides, they force me to be meticulously clean with them: I've heard that long-term contacts increase your risk for infections and whatnot... I've worn daily soft lenses for ages and never had any problems.

Not surprisingly, I tore my disposable toric contact lens.

Good thing it was a sample.

Now I know to buy a daily wear one instead.

It's more of a specialty lens then? So your eye doctor tried fitting you with the other types of lenses (non-vials) before and they didn't work? (I'm curious to know what your Rx is.)

And btw, those vials are called year-round lenses, referring to the fact that you keep them for 1 year or more. The dailies are usually referring to ones where you throw out after one day (comes in a pack of 30 or 60). The ones that you throw out every 2 months or so (the 6-packs I mentioned earlier) are sometimes called monthlies.

Too bad you can't get the 6-packs. Those are less expensive PLUS you get 6 lenses.

It's just that my optometrist refers to the year-rounds as daily wear lenses, as opposed to disposable lenses.

I've always worn year-rounds since the beginning: they're more robust and durable... The others, like the sample I had, always folded over and were too fragile.

Yeah, my optometrist tried to sell me on the multi-packs, but they're not any cheaper, but the same cost: The only advantage being you have lots of spare lenses.

I'm pretty meticulous about cleaning, so I'm not worried about the year-round lenses: I usually get 18 months of use out of them.

Ah, I see why your optometrist used "dailies" instead of "disposables" now. I guess every doctor has their own terms. But when I order the daily disposable ones (ones where you throw them out every day), a lot of times they are called "dailies" so I guess that's where the confusion started.

And I understand about the multi-packs being flimsy. I used to have that problem, but got used to it after a while. It's odd how the multi-packs are about the same cost as your year-round ones though. Maybe your prescription is more complex.

Glad to hear you're good about cleaning your lenses. A lot of people don't do that every night, which is why the sensitive people can get allergies (red eyes, mucous, etc) if the lens isn't disinfected.

Yup, for a year's supply of the disposables it's the same cost... No advantage other than not having to clean them and have a fresh one to use every day/week/etc...

Aside from the astigmatism correction, the lenses are the smallest available: 14.0mm...

Yup.

My vision's bad enough without the lenses... Last thing I want is some kinda eye infection or whatnot.

If they're the disposable kind (the ones in a 6-pack), I'd say about every 2-3 months if you disinfect it every night. Or whenever it seems cloudy or dirty even when you disinfect them. That's what my boss stands by and he's been in practice for 30+ years.
