Apparently not.

I can boot and run everything from a USB flash drive (>= 2GB).

Installing some software has been a bit of a chore with Ubuntu and the file system is quite different from Windows.

Guess I'll need to read up on the basics of Linux.

It seems like most people who use Ubuntu always say that installing software is easy.

Wow, Ubuntu has surprised me once again: The old Pentium 4 PC that I have connected to my HDTV couldn't drive anything higher than 1024x768 in Windows, but using Ubuntu, I can get 1920x1080...

Microsoft responds to disgruntled users, unveils changes to Windows 8 UI

You can unpack your suitcase and drop that custody suit, because Microsoft has heard your Windows 8 complaints, and it's willing to change its ways. Yesterday, in a lengthy post on its Building Windows 8 blog, the company acknowledged that it's received plenty of feedback since unleashing a developer preview of the OS last month, and pledged to respond with a number changes. For starters, apps displayed within the Windows 8 App Screen can now be organized into groups, rather than alphabetical arrangements (see image above). Apps will also be displayed at a higher density, thereby cramming more content within the same space. Enterprise users, meanwhile, will be able to customize their companies' Start screens and unify them across networks, though there's still no word on whether administrators will be able to opt out of the software's tiled interface in favor of the more Windows 7-esque Desktop app -- one of the most highly requested features. These are just two of many, relatively granular changes that Microsoft is implementing to help users maximize the efficiency of its new Start screen, and they likely won't be the last.

Though it seems to make my PC run slow for some reason... Version 11.04 didn't do that.

Maybe I should be using the Long Term Support version: 10.04.

Rolled my test test PC back to Ubuntu 11.04... Much better: no sluggishness or instability.

It's hard to believe that it was ten years ago today (October 25 2011) that Windows XP first hit retail shelves. It's even more astonishing when you realize that it was still the most popular operating system in the world until the beginning of this month. The sun may finally be setting on the stalwart OS that has powered countless home and business PCs (it crossed the 400 million mark way back in 2006), but it's still number two -- right behind it's youngest brother Windows 7 and well ahead of the black sheep, Vista. Sure, our relationship with Microsoft's OS has had its ups and downs, but it's clear we've developed an attachment to the ol' bird. After all, consumer demand kept it shipping on PCs until late 2010 and Redmond has pledged to support it until April 8th of 2014. If nothing else, XP will be remembered for its incredible resilience.

My monitor was going bad so I bought a new monitor recently. A 24" Viewsonic 1080p for a 160 bucks...I think that was a pretty good price!

Yeah well I will admit it is an LCD monitor, not an LED LCD which are more expensive but I didn't care so much because the particular desktop is not my primary machine. I use my laptop most of the time.

Oh yeah the monitor actually has integrated audio speakers but I'm not using them because I have separate speakers as most ppl do.

Trust me I wasn't anxious to buy a new monitor for an aging computer but I had no choice, and it's a computer that I still utilize for important things every so often...guess because consumer demand is still soft given the state of the economy there are some good, if not great, deals out there if you do a little digging.
