Karei-naru Ichizoku [The Grand Tribe] will start airing January 2007 on TBS, Sundays 9 PM, till March 2007 (winter season).

Adapted from a book written by Yamazaki Toyoko, the author of Shiroi Kyoto and Nyokei Kazoku.

In the pers conference dated November 14th, today, the casts has already been announced:

KIMURA TAKUYA
Suzuki Kyoka
Yamamoto Koji
Hasegawa Kyoko
Nakamura Toru
Inamori Izumi
Yamada Yuu
Fukuishi Kazue
Aibu Saki
Narimiya Hiroki
Takigawa Yumi

The story sets in Tokyo in the 1970s decade. Because of this quite difficult set, the filming of this drama is gonna be done in Shanghai. So for the next few months, the casts and staff will have to go back and forth between Tokyo and Shanghai for the filming. Shanghai has also been decorated here and there, to make it look more like Tokyo in the 70s.

The filming has started since October 15th ago.

Kimura Takuya will play the role as Manpyo Teppei, the eldest son of the Manpyo family who is also the heir of the family's business. He is now the executive director of the Manpyo firm.

The drama tells the conflicts within the Manpyo family, which is well-known in the Kansai financial circles, in the midst of the 70s' financial industry turmoil.

In the book, the leading character is Manpyo Daisuke, Teppei's father. But in this drama, the leading character would be Teppei, the eldest son, played by Kimura Takuya.

Relationship Chart

credits to F-chan

Kimura Takuya(Teppei): The Eldest son. Hasegawa Kyoko as his love interest.

Yamamoto Koji: The Second Son. Love interest is Yamada Yuu.

Fukuishi Kazue: Third Child, First Daughter. Love interest is Nakamura Toru.

Aibu Saki: Fourth Child, Second Daughter. (I'm guessing Narimiya Hiroki will be her love interest^^)

Kyoka Suzuki: Related to Teppei's father, Daisuke...I'm not sure whether she's a lover, ex-lover or the second wife... xD

Well... Let's look forward to it!!!^o^

From the director of GOOD LUCK !! & M no Higeki[The Tragedy of M], comes a story of the Manpyo "royal" family. Conflicts and mystery within the family will slowly be revealed in each episode. The TBS drama will start on January 14th, 2007 and the first episode will be a 90-mins special! The official website: http://www.tbs.co.jp/karei2007/

The Manpyo Family is NO Brady Bunch. If you think Karei-naru Ichizoku is a light heart-warming family drama, like Oyaji, Otousan, Yasashii Jikan, Ai Kurushii or Brother Beat... You better drop that idea now!

The Manpyo family, who live in a huge mansion, an unusual place for Japan, with flowered wallpaper, brocade sofas, abundant Greek statuary, stained-glass Moorish windows, plenty of crystal chandeliers(there are several in the living room alone) and three brass beds in the master bedroom, ...is about betrayal, scheme, cunning, and rivalry.

The person who still have the responsibility, leadership, and healthy mind is probably only the eldest son, Manpyo Teppei.

Let me introduce to you once again, The Manpyo Family & the other casts in Karei-naru Ichizoku:

Manpyo Teppei (Kimura Takuya), the 34 years old eldest son. He is married to a beautiful 30 years old lady, Sanae (Hasegawa Kyoko). They suppose to have 2 kids, a boy and a girl. But it seems, in the TBS dorama, they only have a baby boy.
Sanae is The Good Wife-type, she was arranged married to Teppei for business reasons. But fortunately Teppei and Sanae become an ideal husband and wife, they understand each other and support each other. Teppei let Sanae gives her thoughts and suggestions on every problem he faces. In any case, she always support Teppei with all her might. Both Teppei and Sanae dislike Takasu Aiko, the mistress.

Manpyo Daisuke (Kitaoji Kinya), 60 years old, is the head of the family, the father of 2 sons and 2 daughters. He is a powerful banker and has a scheming, willful mistress, 39 years old Takasu Aiko (Suzuki Kyoka), as well as a meek old-fashioned wife, Yasuko (Harada Mieko). The wife, Yasuko, always wears kimonos. While, the mistress looks dressed for a disco. Yasuko likes to stay in her own quarters, in the house's only traditionally Japanese section.
Aiko, the mistress, live in the Manpyo household for 19 years already. She came to the house as a private teacher for the kids, at first. But one thing lent to another...she end up as Daisuke's unofficial 2nd wife and become the head of the Manpyo household affairs. She knows everything about Daisuke's banking business affairs. She's the one who organized all the arrange marriages of the Manpyo children. And she often brag about this to Yasuko, the official wife, who can only sits and seclude herself in her quarter and didn't do much for the household matters.
Yasuko and Aiko have their night-turns to sleep together with Daisuke. Tonight Yasuko's turn, tomorrow is Aiko's turn, and so on. The wife and the mistress are actually in good terms, in the outside. While Manpyo children tend to express their dislike feelings to Aiko openly, it's always Yasuko, their mother who try to tone them down, saying that Aiko is not that kind of person, that they should be grateful to her and so on.

Manpyo Ginpei (Yamamoto Koji), 31, is the second son, Teppei's younger brother. He is the apathetic type. He works at the Manpyo company, but he doesn't really care about the family business affairs. In the beginning of the story, Aiko, the mistress was arranging an omiai (arranged engagement/marriage) for Ginpei, to the daughter of Yasuda, a big company president. With this engagement, it can bring merit to the Manpyo company.
So, later Ginpei is engaged to Yasuda Makiko (Yamada Yuu), 24. He doesn't really care about the matter, he just follow the arrangement...
After the marriage, Aiko find out that Makiko likes to sneak around the house. Then, Aiko begins to suspect her and investigate Makiko's background. What did Aiko find about Makiko's background and what is she up to?

Teppei's first younger sister is Mima Ichiko (Fukuishi Kazue), 29 years old, was betrothed to Mima Wataru (Nakamura Toru), who is 15 years older than her. Another result of an arranged marriage by Aiko, the mistress.
As we know, the story is basically about the father and son, Daisuke and Teppei's rivalry in banking business. Mima Wataru, the son-in-law, is 'kind of' in Daisuke's side. Daisuke ask many favours to Wataru, and Wataru is willing to help him. Weird enough, Mima Wataru likes to flirt around with Aiko, the mistress. They go to a bar or restaurant together from time to time.

The youngest child, is Manpyo Tsugiko (Aibu Saki), 22 years old. Among the three, Tsugiko is the closest sibling to Teppei. She's a brother-complex, she really love her eldest brother. Other than Teppei, she's the closest one to Yasuko, the mother, too.
Other than being her beloved eldest brother, Teppei is also Tsugiko's cupid, he pick and drop love letters for Tsugiko^^
Other than Teppei, Tsugiko is another likeable character in the story. She knows what she wants, she's a firm and determined girl. She declared that she know exactly what's marriage is all about. And she knows she doesn't want the lives that her mother or her older sister, Ichiko, had.
She hates Aiko, the mistress and often face her with a challenging and daring attitude.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Other Casts:

Narimiya Hiroki as Ichinose Yoshihiko, 26 years old. And, Hiraizumi Sei as Yoshihiko's father, the Head of Ichinose Factory.
Ichinose Factory is under Teppei's departement. Yoshihiko is the son of the factory's head, and he works for Teppei. He's involved in a love relationship with Tsugiko, Teppei's little sister. While, Yoshihiko work in America, love letters for Tsugiko has always been sent to the office, so Teppei help him pick 'em up and hand it over to Tsugiko.
However, its a knowledge for a Manpyo, that Yoshihiko and Tsugiko's love relationship is actually forbidden, and they can never be married, as a Manpyo family member will never be allowed to marry the son of a factory's head.
More than anyone else, Aiko, the mistress, against their relationship and start to arrange an omiai as soon as possible for Tsugiko.

Nishida Toshiyuki as Ohkawa Ichiro, 60 years old. He is Manpyo Sanae's father, Teppei's father-in-law. Rather than his own father, Teppei has a better relationship with Ohkawa Ichiro, the father in law. They're a good business partner. And Ohkawa helps Teppei alot in business matters.
(Ironic to know that Daisuke also has a better relationship with his son in law, Mima Wataru^^)

Nishimura Masahiko as Zenitaka, 52. He works for Ohkawa Ichiro.

Takigawa Yumi & Inamori Izumi play the roles as mother and daughter.

Takeda Tetsuya as Ohkame, 60.

Yanagiba Toshiro as Migumo Shoichi, 50. He first met Teppei in America, when Teppei was still a college student there. Migumo's daughter was Teppei's college mate. Teppei knows the Migumo family very well. Teppei have a good relationship with Migumo, in business and in private.

Karei-naru Ichizoku was written by Yamazaki Toyoko(now 81 years old), and published in 1973.

In 1974, the book was adapted to a 3.5 hours-length movie with the same title. The movie was once shown internationally in early 1980s and has English subtitle. The title was changed to "The Family".

Manpyo Teppei in the 1974 movie, was acted by Nakadai Tatsuya. You can check his photo here: http://jdorama.com/artiste.1838.htm
He's the old man in Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai wo Sakebu TV drama.
While, Ichinose Yoshihiko was acted by Kitaoji Kinya, who's gonna play the role as Manpyo Daisuke in the TBS drama.

Based on the 1974 movie, here are some SPOILER of the story...
(Remember that these ARE spoiler of the original story and NOT the spoiler of the TBS drama! The TBS drama just started filming, anyway. And there's a big chance that the TBS drama would probably deviated from the original story^^)

I just watched the 1974 movie version. I've updated infos on the characters^^ There were some mistakes in the characters' NAMES, and I've corrected them. Seriously, the kanji characters' surnames and given names in this story are weird and difficult to read xD Now that I've watched the movie, I know how to read them^^ Please, check back up there.

It's interesting to know that Teppei and Tsugiko, his youngest sister, are the closest ones among the Manpyo children. I hope Kimura Takuya and Aibu Saki has a good brother-sister chemistry^^ As I think, the whole plot of the love letters and Teppei being cupid for her, is cute!!

And, boy! What ALOT banking, economic matters in the story! I don't understand banking and economic terms yet, so its hard for me to understand what are the business problems are, or how can Teppei take down Daisuke, or the other way around Sweat

Will post further review on the 1974 movie, later...

I just got the chance to write the FULL review of the 1974 movie version of Karei-naru Ichizoku. It's here: http://yumekanau.tripod.com/Karei-Review.html

Because I like the story very much, you can expect that you'll be getting a LONG review Mr Green And there's also some screencaps of the original casts.

This is the short verdict:
The story is GOOD and INTERESTING. I haven't really seen many Jap stories like this. It's not the usual traditional Japanese family kind of story.

What's make it interesting is that the characters are all WELL-built and of strong characteristics. And another plus points of the story are indeed: the relationship between the characters, this what looks so prominent in the story, interesting various unusual kind of relationships between the characters, hence produce a good, well-written story.

Hahaha... 27.7% of ratings... But will it go up or down from now? I would more see the show raking up some more percents and by the end of the series grab a whooping 32-33%. Now the worst scenario is for it to lose percents of ratings here and there and by the end of the series get a (nonetheless fantastic but average for our national drama hero Takuya Kimura) 24-25%.

Looking forward to the next episode! Who's singing the theme for this drama though?

Karei-naru Ichizoku Ep01
Review by Yanie

The episode opens with an old lady narration about Japan's financial situation in the 1970s. Actually, the narration does not only appear in the opening scene, but it comes out until the middle of the episode, explaining details about the Manpyo family business. The drama almost looks like a documentary. This narration-style was also applied for the 1974 movie version.

Then, it's the scene of Manpyo Teppei [Kimura Takuya] walks in the midst of snow storm on top of the mountain. With a grandeur-feel of background music. And with the breath-taking snow-stormy mountain scenery and cinematography. It is a bit unbelievable that this is a TV drama, and not a wide-screen movie. This scene is definitely will fit in to be shown on a big wide screen at the cinema theatre.

The timeline goes back to 2 years before. Another amazing view is shown...a whole set of Tokyo in the 1970s era. The cable trains, the cars, the old buildings, the thousands of people on the street (of course with 1970s style clothes). Then, its Teppei's scene talking to the factory's head, Ichinose.

The next scene is the scene where the iron machine in the factory exploded while Teppei was there. With rain of fire pouring down, the workers were in panic. One man is trying to save something important, and he accidentally got burned. No one's there bold enough to help the burning man. But Teppei can't stay still and so he takes the risk, and help the man to put off the fire with a towel in the midst of the pouring fire rain. Seeing their big boss going to the front line like that, the other workers finally join in to help too. The fire has finally put off, and as the protect-mask lifted up, its revealed the almost-burned man is Ichinose Yoshihiko [Narimiya Hiroki], Ichinose-factory head's son. He is fine, because the burned outfit protected him from fire. This is a very tensed scene and was filmed very, very well. You'll believe that Kimura Takuya and Narimiya Hiroki were really struggling in the middle of the pouring fire, though those were only computer graphics.

The scene continues on to the Manpyo family dinner and New Year event in a hotel. The classic opening scene in the book and the movie. Some details are changed here and there. But the important scenes are there. Also, the scene where Teppei and his wife, Sanae(Hasegawa Kyoko), sees Yasuko(Teppei's mother) and Aiko(the father's lover) walks together, but then separate their ways, Aiko going in to the father's room, while Yasuko going into her own room. Teppei and Sanae glares at Aiko with hatred in their eyes. And the scene where Sanae tells Teppei she doesn't like the fact that Aiko controls around the Manpyo family in their room while their child is sleeping. Also the scene where Aiko talks to Daisuke(Teppei's father) about Ginpei(Teppei's brother)'s engagement in the room. These are all the same as the original. But as for the scene where Aiko talks to Daisuke in the room, it was too short and didn't really show Aiko's strong characteristic...too bad.... This scene was suppose to be an introduction of what kind of woman Takasu Aiko really is.

The ending scene of this episode is superb and wonderful. Teppei and his father, Daisuke's dialogue scene, in the beautiful, beautiful garden of the Manpyo house on the bridge above the big fish pond...

Teppei: Father! Good morning!
Daisuke: Morning.
Teppei: I'm very sorry to held you till midnight yesterday...
Daisuke: Ah...
Teppei: But, I feel very happy that you allowed me to handle those business deals. I'm very happy... Thank you very much.
Daisuke: Teppei...
Teppei: Yes?
Daisuke: It has been a long time since we saw Shobun...
Teppei: *ponders a bit* Aaa...that big gold-coloured carp fish?
Daisuke: If Jii-san(*grandfather, actually Daisuke's own father) didn't clap his hands, that fish won't appear on the surface of this pond. Since Jii-san died, I've never seen that fish ever again....
Teppei: That fish must have died, already...
Daisuke: No... If you clap your hands, that fish will definitely appear.
Teppei: I don't think so.
Daisuke: Try it, clap your hands now.
Teppei: There's no way it will appear...
Daisuke: Doesn't matter, just try and clap your hands.

Teppei hesitates but then he claps his hands twice. Daisuke and Teppei observes both sides of the pond, but nothing comes out.

Teppei: See? It's dead already. *bows* I'm leaving now...

Suddenly a splash of water is heard. Teppei pauses to see what it is. And just like a miracle, the big gold-coloured carp fish comes out. And...another mysterious thing happens...the fish swims closer to Teppei's direction. Teppei is a bit surprised with this. Daisuke is in awe...

Daisuke: ...so you are Jii-san's son, afterall.......

With that last line, Daisuke leaves the place. Teppei doesn't really hear what he just said.

Teppei: (voice over) I will never forget father's face expression when he see the Shobun fish appears again after 10 years... Just because of that one fish...my struggle with the Manpyo patriarch has probably begin...

This scene somehow is the turning point of everything. And it is filmed so well. Throughout the episode people kept mentioning how Teppei resembles his grandfather, Keisuke. And they also compares how Keisuke and Daisuke handles business differently, and so Teppei was mentioned the way he handles business is similar to his grandfather. Daisuke hates his father very much. So to hear people kept mentioning that Teppei resembles his grandfather, he slowly hold a grudge towards his own son. Then, seem like something also happened in the past too...

So in the ending scene, where the fish appear and even swims to Teppei's direction, makes him looks like the incarnation of his grandfather... It'll give you goosebumps. And so I think this scene is filmed very well.

The ending credits rolls after this. I feel disappointed there is no themesong for this drama, the ending credits rolls only with the background music that has appeared in this episode over and over. Right after that ending scene, I was expecting something like Hitoto Yo's voice, Dreams Come True's voice, Shibasaki Kou's voice or Sun Min's voice(Nihon Chinbotsu themesong singer) to sing the themesong...but none at all. I feel quite disappointed...

In overall, this episode is still only an introduction episode to the characters and the prologue of the story. None of the conflicts has really begin yet. The middle part drags...perhaps there were just too many characters involved in the Manpyo family business, and they were all introduced as well, in those draggy scenes...including Teppei's father-in-law...but good thing, the father-in-law is a likeable character, and he has good chemistry with Teppei.

The episode still focuses too much on Teppei's character alone, and none of the other characters had the chance to be prominent. While, in my opinion, what makes this Karei-naru Ichizoku masterpiece interesting, are the conflicts between the various unique and interesting(neither black nor white) characters other than the total-white Teppei, the good son. It's quite amusing to see so many big stars got so little roles in this drama. All of the supporting characters were actually those actors and actresses who usually got the main roles in other dramas, be it nowadays or 10-20 years ago. I really hope the other characters will have more focus in the next episodes, as I'm really satisfied with the casting and they all fit in very well with their respective roles.

based on what i've seen from the first ep, this looks to be a very heavy, serious and powerful dorama. looks set for some titanic clashes between father and son methinks Bleah

Wonder if I gonna enjoy this bcause as shindou said the story its pretty deep and heavy.. And yanie_chan said that ep1 was only the introduction to the character.. predicting that the conflict will emits and intertwined with each other resulting a complex dorama.. Sweat Sweat
