Synopsis
The star of the show is Rosinante, a lovable Labrador retriever, whose master, a commuter train conductor, dies while Rosinante is spending the night at the impromptu weekend dog hotel a veterinary professor has set up at the university to collect a little extra cash. With a touch of the loyal Hachiko in him, Rosinante greets all the passing trains his master used to ride. Such loyalty leads Domoto to adopt Rosinante even if it does mean getting thrown out of his apartment building and having to live in the girl's dorm.

"Dear Diary, the dogs broke out of the veterinary clinic again today . . .", you would think was written by a person. Well, the whole story is in fact told by a dog, Rosinante, one of the inhabitants of a university veterinary clinic. Chief among his writings is happy-go-lucky yet hapless vet student Arata Mukai, who is at bliss with animals. The question is, can Arata get along with his peers and professors as well as he can with the animals he cares for?

1. Nice! [Rating: 6/10]
I love comedies, which is also one for the reason why I decided to get this dorama because the reviews I've read. Sure enough, it did not disappoint me with it's many comical scenes. :)

The story is about Arata, who aspires to be a vet because he loves animals. He's a happy-go-lucky and sweet guy who is well-loved by animals, but at the same time, he is in a daze most of the time, prompting his classmates (and even lecturers) to take advantage of his kindness at times. His first encounter with Rosinante was at his University's veterinary clinic where the kawaii dog was staying for the weekend. When the owner did not turn up to collect the dog, Arata and his classmates went to look for him, only to discover that the owner had ...... When the now owner-less and homeless Rosinante was about to be taken away, the kind-hearted Arata decided there and then to adopt him, and in the process, got thrown out of his apartment.

From there on, the story revolves around Arata and Rosinante. Although the drama's title is "A Diary of a Dog", it focus more on Arata Mukai (Dohmoto Tsuyoshi) and the people around him (in some episodes). It's only towards the later half (and the end) of the drama then did the show started to focus on Rosinante.

The stories are funny (I've already mentioned that) and yes, touching. There're also some moral implications about animals in certain parts which can perhaps, influence you to change your way of thinking towards animals. Most of the stories are also down-to-earth, reflecting the dilemmas and feelings of modern day pet owners. The stories are, at it best, humourous, interesting (even exciting) and sad, but unfortunately, it kind of got a little boring in the end (IMO). The ending was nice in a way and I rather liked the ending when Rosinante finally went back to Arata, but some parts were like repeating themselves and going in cycles: he left, and he came back; he left, and he came back... if you get what I mean. But other than that, it's a fairly nice dorama to watch in your free time.

I think the characters were rather cute and funny (though some were really weird, like the nurse). They do tend to overact at times, but overall, the casts' (and dog's) acting were credible. (Akiyama Jun was cute too ^^). On a parting shot, I just want to say that I liked the ending part of every epsiode where there's a little scene Tsuyoshi showing talking to Rosinante (and in human form at that!).

Watch this dorama if you like animals, Tsuyoshi and comical-yet-touching stories. :)

2. Excellent concept... but very irritating!!! [Rating: 6/10]
Domoto's versatility as an actor is further justified as he portrays a simple-minded man who is always made use of by the people around him. However, it is through his simple mindedness that earns the trust of Rosinante and the appraisal of his friends. Many issues regarding animal-human relationships are explored in great detail. However, Domoto is the only actor worth watching in the show. Everyone else is far too irritating to watch, especially his the 2 professors, his classmates and the nurse! The things that they do make them look like retards rather than to add a comical element to the plot.

3. Surprising Boring [Rating: 4/10]
First of all, after seeing the reviews above,I guess I am not the only one amazed with Tsuyoshi's acting.I precisely brought this Vcd bcoz of him after seeing his brilliant performance in Summer Snow.(Highly Recommended!)I thought that someone of his stature would participate in quality productions, but this show is surprisingly boring.Unless you are a die-hard fan of Tsuyoshi, otherwise this is just a waste of time, not to mention $.

4. Tsuyoshi is so kawaii!!! [Rating: 10/10]
Tsuyoshi really surprises me with his outstanding acting. He really has done a great job. I love this show a lot esp. the short clip that will be shown after each story... Tsuyoshi's conversation with the "dog". Throughout the whole show, i was pratically laughing and crying at the same time. I believe many others will agree that this show is a success and definitely a recognition of Tsuyoshi's acting. Tsuyoshi is the BEST!!!!

5. Very touching drama! [Rating: 9/10]
I do not agree what GunGod had said 'boring'. I love this drama! I think it's even more touching than Summer Snow. I was crying throughout the whole series. Though there are many sad scenes, it has many funny scenes too. I think Tsuyoshi did a great job! His acting, as always is the best. Though this drama may not be a big production like Summer Snow or to Heart, but nonetheless, it is a good drama.

I loved this drama. It really shows just how great Tsuyoshi's acting is because this character is really different from Yuji in To Heart and Natsuo in Summer Snow. And no doubt, I cried during some parts of the drama especially the part involving the little monkey. This is a must watch drama!

This drama shows yet another side of Tsuyoshi's good acting skills. It's mainly based on the relationships between animals and humans. People who love animals like me shouldn't miss this out as there are funny parts and also parts that make you cry. Roshinante is really cute..

I had this drama for about 2 years~ but watched epi 1 and 2 and then gave up because I found it boring~~

indeed the 1st episodes were boring~ couple days ago i picked this up again~
and continued watching.. and omg~ it's SOOO touching~ I cried in most episodes~~ not like BAWL but like really touched~~
Domoto Tsuyoshi is a great actor~ he's so versitile~~ I've seen a lot of his dramas~ i think he acts well in all of them~~ (maybe not the annoying guy in moto kare~ i hated that show)

HERE~~ he really got me touched~ his character is SOO sweet~ you'd think he's dumb but then he's just naive, simple and kind guy who loves animals and his friends~
not to mention Tsuyoshi is so cute! he suits this role soo well ~ i can't think of anyone better to do Ayata~

(just btw..the old nurse who likes him is so gross haha)

the ending is so sadtho!!!! poorAyata!!!

recommended drama ~ especially if you like animals~~

For those of you who may find the initial episodes irritating, please endure the childish behavior of the other actors and press on. The last few episodes are extremely meaningful and touching. Definitely worth the watch.

When i started watching the first episode..."why the h*ll am I watching this drama..stupid man with his dog"..but as I progressed, it was really a sweet and touching drama. And of course, tsuyoshi really bring out the role...as a slow guy and easily bullied by others...there are some really touching scenes..and the theme song by kinki kids was really nice...sugoi. Highly recommended. And the cameo by koichi really add the spark at the end of the drama.

another proof of how much talent he possesses, DoTsuyo excels again witha sweet and convincing portrayal of a slow, perhaps low IQ uni student, studying to be a vet(whoa..talk abt ironies..) this story is abt his relationship with his pet dog, Roshinante( I love it the way he says Roshinante..so cute!!)
I also love the voice over of the dog..so hillarious...but mind you, this story has its moments..so prepare tissues..

I didn't like this at all, even if it had Tsuyoshi and Nacci in it. In fact I don't even remember if I finished the last few episodes cos I can't remember how it ended. The main character Arata is just too spaced out for me to appreciate or understand. & I guess I'm not that much of an animal lover either. :(

Tsuyoshi's such a dope here, but it's kinda cute. The animals... so cute... the stories describing what goes on between people and animals are great and somewhat touching. The part where Rosinante looks for Arata... so sad...

Frankly speaking, I followed this dorama because of Abe Natsumi, her apperance in the dorama is so sweet looking and adorable ^^. But story wise, it's touching and will make people think twice about abandoning their pets!

This is seriously a great dorama to watch!!! My friends writes for a newspaper and after watching the whole series, she wrote a topic on what she was inspired while watching this dorama!!!! seriously, this is s great dorama, unlike some who had commented that it was boring and all. It is really touching and it reflects on how humans treat animals nowadays. I practically cried EVERY episode!! Like ViVi, the episode which i cried the most was the monkey part. Even my youngest bro cried too.. ring... poor monkey... *sobs sobs*
