His mother, Yukino-chan - a former geisha - refuses to share with him the identity of his father. | 1. | Excellently written [Rating: 8/10] When I watched the first episode of Haikei, Chichiue-sama I felt overwhelmed and confused. There was a lot of information being given about the various characters and the opening situation to the plot. The episode seemed to fly by and I only had a grasp of what was happening.
The second episode clarified a few things for mec but only a few. I began wondering if this was going to be another one of those dramas that I have to force myself to complete. By the time I had finished episode 5, however, my opinion had changed.
This is a very well written drama. The story has a lot of depth and breadth, and gradually brings about different elements that are applicable to the overall storyline. Each character, even the minor characters, are developed as much as their character needs and you therefore really get a sense of connectedness and unification. The varying relationships make sense. For example, the relationship between Ippei and his mother, Yukino-chan, is rather unconventionalc and yet when you are exposed to their situation in depth and the character traits of each, their relationship makes perfect sense.
I personally found the main character, Ippei, rather hard to like. Hefs boring, corky, lame, and somewhat selfish. Hefs SUPPOSED to be all these thingsc it just so happens that I get frustrated with these qualities in a man. Yumeko, around whom the characters gravitate, was cute and likable, though sometimes annoying. My favourite characters were Yukino-chan, Ritsuko-san, and Tokio. All three were perfectly cast and truly portrayed their characters in a believable, emotional success. Yukino-chan was incredibly believable, as is expected of Takashima Reiko. Ifve always enjoyed her in other dramas, but shefs not one of my favourites.
There is no definite conclusion to the storyline, but thatfs okay. The drama is meant to capture a time in Ippeifs life, and because life will always continue, the lack of ending didnft effect the drama over all.
This drama is made upon its characters, with a solid storyline to unify them. | Reviewed by Wynter on 10 November 2007 | 2. | Awesome job by a wonderful cast [Rating: 9/10] This drama is often compared to Yasashii Jikan (another Nino drama), but there's no comparison--this is the more superb drama. This story is narrated by Ippei, an apprentice cook in a traditional Japanese restaurant, and it is mostly of his views about what goes on around him. He tells of his job at Sakashita and the people who work there; his first love; and especially his curiosity about his father, who he has never met.
The title of this drama, "Haikei, Chichiuesama" (Dear Father,) comes from his conversation with Tokio, his buffoon of a roommate, who mentions that he writes letters to his father, but doesn't mail them. Hence, Ippei's "letters" to his father as he's narrating.
The little quirks of the people (the bartender with his hobby of getting into media pics, the mistress of Sakashita with her secret little excursions to buy red underwear, Hanjiro(?) with his tendency to hiccup when angered) just add to the appeal of this heartwarming drama.
Not to add any fangirlism to it, but in this drama, I can really see why Nino is one of the better actors out there. His acting is quite impressive and made me a fan. The rest of the cast has only added to the appeal of this drama and this drama gets a high rating from me. | Reviewed by sadacori on 7 July 2007 | 3. | GOOOD!!! [Rating: 10/10] Simply one of Nino's bests!!!!
Nino, for God's sake, is intriguing~
The heart-touching story, presented by a marvellous collection of wonderful casts, adorned by Moriyama Ryoko's Papier, has made this a GOD-DAMLY-SATISFYING dorama.
The best thing about this dorama is that everyone has done his part well and no one overdo anything~
The only harmless weakpoint of this dorama, if I were to name any, is that Yokoyama does not look like a 19~~ He is apparently older than Ninomiya-kun :S | Reviewed by idetakun on 12 April 2007 | 4. | They are here!! at my work!! However, I never felt with the characters, or the struggle/plight they were in. It was by no means bad, quite enjoyable with its lighter moments, but I failed to get a clear idea of what some of the characters are like, particularly the younger ones (perhaps they were too plain/simple for my liking). I was also disappointed with the lack of resolution. There were no particular moving/touching moments for me, perhaps I expected too much. Forgot to mention, the accompanying music, particularly the ending theme song, is great. The black and white stills at the end of each episode are beautifully shot too. | 2. | Comments by Susan [Rating: 10/10] Haikei, Chichiue-sama's complex story and interesting characters really drew me in. I was impressed with the level of intelligence written into the series. It wasn't the usual romantic comedy/drama that I had come to expect from Japan. It was actually focused on real-life problems and what made it fun to watch were the characters. Although they weren't written to be clowns, it was their everyday reactions and interactions with each other that made them so amusing. The entire cast did a superb job. My only disappointment was the inconclusive ending, but I can see the reasoning behind it and I would be happy if it was left there or if a special was produced to tie up loose threads. | 3. | Comments by nishishi [Rating: 8/10] Haikei, Chichiue-sama is a good dorama... But probably most young ppl wont like it.... since they r used to those fast passed stories.. wich Haikei is not!!!
This dorama has a beatiful story... And it gets even better after some episodes.... The casting is also superb!!! U could even forget that Haikei is just a dorama... and start believing that those ppl really exists in the real world! And thats because all the actors play their roles with amazing acting skills.!!!
Haikei is really an awesome dorama... And its good 2 watch those kind of slow progress story's dorama once in a while... Thumbs up!!! | 4. | Comments by takuan [Rating: 8/10] I really liked this drama - it's directed by the same person that did Yasashii Jikan, and you can tell cause it has his style all over it. So, if you liked Yasashii Jikan, it's likely that you will enjoy this one as well. My only gripe with this is that the ending left too many questions unanswered. I frequently enjoy the occasional open-ended series, and I understand why the writer left things that way, but I still like to have at least one of the major questions posed, answered. | 5. | Comments by Cerebus [Rating: 8/10] Drama about the conflict between the old and modern set in a traditional restaurant. Ninomiya Kazunari is excellent in the lead, somewhat suprisingly as he is a Johnny. His character mainly acts as a go-between and commentator on the rest of the cast, most of whom are over 30, which is very refreshing. Yachigusa Kaoru is particularly good as the grandmother. The closing credits which simply consisted of a series of black and white photographs was particularly effective. | 6. | Comments by Eyeyore [Rating: 8/10] Thanks for the info on Ippei.
I think i will watch it again, not for the story which wasn't properly researched developed and went round in circles. There is a thick Japanese flavour to it, whether in terms of speech, body language, decor, ornaments. The production set took care of so much details that it's worth a second look. The other reason for watching it again is the lady boss, a former geisha. She can be funny without betraying her kimono facet. | 7. | Comments by Sleepingstar [Rating: 8/10] Surprisingly really liked this, though it doesn't seem kind of dorama I'd enjoy most (and partly it really isn't, but there is also things that I like this dorama). Also something you notice is that whole dorama kinda old fashioned in a way, though there are things like cellphones there so it's not like this is some old story. Only thing that is really worth whining is that ep 10 and 11 could have been better IMO (ending was fine though). | 8. | Comments by oldasianguy [Rating: 10/10] Nice, pleasant little drama....A story of a young man struggling to be a chef...his every day tribulations and how he tries to do his best..in a way it's every man's story...Ninomiya Kazunari plays the role of the young man and Kuroki Meisa plays the role of the girl he meets and likes...Every season the Japanese TV entertainment comes out with at least one show which is a "winner".. this drama is the winner for this season!!!!! | 9. | Comments by idetakun [Rating: 10/10] Simply one of Nino's bests!!!!
Nino, for God's sake, is intriguing~
The soul-touching story, presented by a marvellous collection of sophisticated casts and adorned by Moriyama Ryoko's harmonious bg music, is definitely a big attraction to dorama lovers.

Also shows how a young man training at a traditional "house" and his various problems that plague him and people. This was one of the only dramas, or movies for that fact that I was so attached to the characters. I postponed watching this for about 5 months due to me being in Korea. (Fin Sun, Apr 20, 2008. Only drama to watch in 8 months) | 11. | Comments by loveaomori [Rating: 10/10] They are here!! at my work!!

With it's slow pace and complex characters, those fragile and delicate emotions... You know what I mean if you've watched 'Yasashii Jikan'. And if you've liked it, then 'Haikei, Chichue-sama' is a must watch for you. | 13. | Comments by oonqy [Rating: 9/10] it is one of the best drama i watched!
only bad thing, is boring initially
but the story is good! alittle of humor in it...
is a good drama for understanding japanese culture as well as the current issues in the society.
is a very heart-warming and emotional towards the end. left me a very deep impression | 14. | Comments by fataliste [Rating: 9/10] The first few episodes were very slow (almost torturous), but the storyline and acting carried the series as it gradually picked up. The series isn't meant to be an exciting, fast paced story but is a sobering reflection of the changing face and urbanisation of Japan, the replacing of the old with the new. | 15. | Comments by sucigam [Rating: 7/10] I wasn't able to relate to the characters as easily as I was in Yasashii Jikan but it was still some what enjoyable. It's nice to see dramas that are set outside of Tokyo once in awhile =).
I believe Yokoyama Yu also had his breakthrough role in this drama, look for big things from this guy soon. | 16. | Comments by suzzy [Rating: 9/10] its a really nice drama
i it teaches u that somtimes somthing u have to know to move
and the hard ship some people have during their lives
well that is what it mean to me
and it was a great job by Ninomiya Kazunari
as usually he had u think man \
great job to all the actors as well | 17. | Comments by Nermal [Rating: 8/10] Turned out to be an enjoyable slow-paced drama this season. With a cast of excellent supporting actors (Takashima Reiko, Umemiya Tatsuo, Takahashi Katsumi, Yachigusa Kaoru) and even the guest appearance of Mori Mitsuko, you can expect a great drama.
Not a must-see, but enjoyable! ^^ | 18. | Comments by mmyy [Rating: 9/10] I find this drama highly amusing and hillarious, with a very poetic style to it. The show has a lot of depth and the music is beautiful. It's the first Nino drama that I've completed, and it made me realise just how awesome an actor he is. In every episode, he never failed to amaze me. | 19. | Comments by gaijinmark [Rating: 6/10] Can't believe some think this was better than 'Yasashi Jikan'!! At least that had a plot. The father/son estrangement, the husband dealing with his deceased wife. All I can say about this drama is that goes nowhere and resolves nothing. But it does have a nice theme song! | 20. | Comments by rele [Rating: 9/10] Not very fast, but that did not bother at all, because there was the same nice flow of time as in yasashii jikan. At first i feared it's going to be too political, but it turned out to be fine. A bit too much side plots to my taste, but all in all solid story overall. | 21. | Comments by Kiyomi L. Denise [Rating: 7/10] Well obviously this is waaaay better than Yasashii Jikan (which i fell asleep halfway watching, pardon).
Really like Nino's hair, and all the actors and actresses were simple SUPERB.
Can sorta relate to the story, since i'm looking for my unknown father too.... | 22. | Comments by simpletoad [Rating: 9/10] i thought this was a boring drama at first , but perserverance paid off . at the end of it , there's alot to be reflected upon . not for those who enjoy skin-deep dramas . nino's acting was once again superb . he won best actor for this again , right ? | 23. | Comments by chibichan [Rating: 8/10] the idea of the story is really simple i think, and Nino as the main character plays it really good. I could feel his desperation for finding his real father, i also feel sorry for Kagurazaka city, the way this dorama tells it really moves my heart. | 24. | Comments by dokaben [Rating: 9/10] A very calming, comfortable drama to watch. Great setting and deep, lovable characters. Watching the inevitable fading of old Tokyo is bittersweet, but the ending offers some hope that life and tradition will carry on. | 25. | Comments by pochichan [Rating: 8/10] The storyline's pace is a bit slow but I'm kinda like the cinematography. Well it does show some traditional japanese atmosphere.. I just love to see how Nino reacted every time he was summoned by the granny... | 26. | Comments by v1olet [Rating: 8/10] A story about Ippei's life. The narrator was Ippei, just like writing a letter or diary, beginning with haikei, chichiue-sama (dear father....). A heartwarming drama with unfinished ending. Nino acted best. | 27. | Comments by moeru_h [Rating: 10/10] One of the best dramas I've seen. The simplicity of the events is what attracts me. I'm drawn to the mundane and the realness of seeing life as it is. Amazing drama! And Nino was so good too. | 28. | Comments by room304 [Rating: 7/10] Strangely I liked this drama very much, probably because of Ninomiya personality. He manages to cheer everyone up just by being himself. This drama isn't one of my favorites but I liked it. | 29. | Comments by natzumi [Rating: 7/10] 2 JE talents; a must watch Jdrama. 2 brilliant actors! I like the plot and the sad life of the protagonist. Yu is a great addition and adds tremendous humor into the mysterious drama. | 30. | Comments by Yuuki MatsuMiya [Rating: 10/10] This drama has a beauty that is very difficult to describe. It warms the soul! The cast is amazing and the soundtrack is superb! Ninomiya Kazunari is indeed a fabulous actor!!! |
