Synopsis
Kogure Yaeko (Haru) is about to resign from her company to get married when her fiance Murano Satoshi (Morioka Ryu) tells her that there is someone else that he likes and breaks off their engagement. A teary Yaeko staggers to a shopping mall in a daze. At the mall, she happens to hear a live performance of Bach’s Air on G String. Moved by the piece, she begins to take violin lessons for adults in the hopes of being able to play it. A university student Kase Rihito (Nakagawa Taishi) and housewife Kitagawa Yukie (Matsushita Yuki) are in the same class as Yaeko. Both interpersonal relationships and the violin prove difficult for the three of them to deal with.

[Hmm, still getting "Database error" when I try to submit this as a review, so I'll just put the review in the Comments field.]

Note: Available as "You, Me and Bach" on Viki as of December 2021.
~ ~ ~

This is a drama about three people from very different backgrounds who are brought together as students in a class for beginner violin. The drama's strength is that the three main characters - actually four, with Mao-sensei the violin instructor - are excellently written and acted, and are truly individual and memorable people. ~ ~ ~

The problem is that the screenplay seems oddly reluctant to commit to a definite path. There's the potential conflict in a love-triangle, but a key character in that triangle gets unceremoniously written out of the story midway through, so that triangle just fizzles. And none of the other relationships gets any deeper than superficial. It's as if the screenwriters couldn't decide what they wanted to do with the concept they'd come up with, so they just left it as a kind of journalistic "this happened, then this happened, then this happend, annnnd... the end." So the viewer is left a little deflated at the end.

But again, the characters are vivid and memorable, and that's this drama's saving grace, and what makes it worth watching. 'Could've been much better, but it's good as it is.
