Actually, I'm Canadian... Although I'm pretty sure Canada allows dual citizenships too. But apparently Japan does not, though I'm not 100% sure about that.

It does not "put emphasis on the topic of the sentence," per se, as the "wa" particle marks a topic, any topic, not necessarily the main topic of the sentence.

The keyword is "contrast". ...
