okay, i dont know how many people would know anything about this but i'll shoot. it seems that japan has a very large obsession with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. i mean, it's understandable. after all, it is one of the greatest achievements in music history. but i hear and have read, that japanese people have taken very deep liking to it and have incorporated it yearly, into their activities. it also appears in some prominent anime series, i.e. evangelion. hmm, maybe they just like it because of its brilliance, or some other cultural reasons. if anyone has anything to say, please post!.

Actually, Beethoven's 9th is quite an inspiring tune. Works on many levels. True story: I blasted this tune while driving out of the parking structure at UH following my VERY LAST (as in "Senior year" very last) final. Picked up a plate lunch at Rainbow's and headed straight to the beach, which God arranged to be completely empty along with blue skies and a bright sun. My friends still had their finals if you must know.
One particular excerpt I enjoy listening to (and, this is a near 18 MINUTE excerpt, mind you) is Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 'Choral.'" Truly.
Classical music, period, is universal. So structured and aesthetic. The right tune(s) simply permeate your soul.

that is true....u'd be surprised though..i've come across people who haven't even heard of beethoven's ninth. but yea, i figured japanese may just be more attuned to classical music than americans.

Any M*A*S*H fans here? Hawkeye Pierce always smelled everything he handled - food, socks, etc. Well, yours truly has the same exact habit.
I receive stuff from Japan on a regular basis. I also receive stuff from many other parts of the world. In comparison to things received from other countries, the stuff I receive from Japan seem to have a smell - especially used stuff. It's hard to describe... From my previous experiences, the smell is sort of like mothballs, mildew or very aged paper. Most of my used Sakai Noriko books smell like this, as well as some of her used CDs. And many of the manga I bought from Japanese sellers have this unique smell as well. And, when I walk into a Japanese store in Hawaii like Shirokiya, I smell this certain odor in the bookstore/cd/video section.
My mom noticed this issue as well. When she used to receive my mail, she could actually tell whether a thick envelope or box came from Japan WITHOUT EVEN READING IT! I kid you not!!!! Stuff from other Asian countries do not seem to have this smell, including stuff from Hong Kong, Singpore, Taiwan, etc.
Anyone else notice this? Are there any explanations to this? Or, is it just me that have a much too powerful sense of smell?

I do notice a particular smell, but most Asian products seem to have a similar smell, IMO, particularly stuff from an Asian store... Maybe it has something to do with the type of container they ship the products in or something... After a while it does dissipate, though.

Hey!! I noticed that too! But I thought it's only because I'm unlucky and picked CDs that smell...
I've bought a number of J Pop CDs, most of them were manufactured in HK (sorry... I usually buy the cheaper one, not the actual imported stuff from Japan coz it'll burn a hole in my pocket in no time ) but on some occasions I did come across sales in shops here and they sell Japan imported CDs at super low prices (like SGD 5.00... that's the cheapest I got anyway). And when I bought these and opened them, they smell like mothballs. I didn't exactly go and deliberately smell them, but when I opened the CD case the smell just... hit. It stank, so I gave the CD a sniff and sure enough the smell comes from there... it's so weird ne... Those HK ones don't smell at all.

Yes, I noticed this too. When I went to Japan, the smell somewhat lingered wherever I went. (Kind of.....) But when I came back to Hawaii, the clothes in my suitcase smelled like that "Japanese smell".
I beleive it's also the same vice versa. When I gave Omiyage to my gf's sister in law and brother, Junko (sister in law) replied with "It has Hawaii's smell".
The air perhaps?????

Hmm, I only got stuff from Japan from a few people, but usually the same people every time. Plus, stuff I brought home. I kinda figured it was however their houses smelled, if that makes any sense....people's stuff smells different and houses smell different. I don't mean they stink or anything, different "aroma" I should say
When I came home from Japan, I noticed my stuff smelled different, but I kinda thought it was from washing my clothes over there, and much of my stuff was packed in my clothes. I notice my clothes smell different if I wash it in different states or over in Japan, because the water is different everywhere you go

I think it's the water too. Japan's tap isn't "drinkable" (to my standards). Tastes like crap..................... No wonder everyone buys "pet bottles". _________________

what a silly topic!..lol.. but yeah i dun think its japane stuiff that smells... i think its all asian things.. they have a certain aroma if u will ..and yes like u said it kinda smells like REALLY REALLY REALLY old paper...IMO
for example i walk in to one of my friend's house who is chinese.. AND EVERYTHING SMELLS WEIRD!.. but she nor her family can smell it... and then i go to another friends house who is korean.. EXACT SAME SMELL and they can't smell it.. but my chinese friends.. can smell the "korean" arouma.... weirdhuh?... also my mother works with mostly asian ppl.. and when i was younger i used to occompany her to her work.. and i used smell it even then!... and i was too young to know any difference between ethnic groups...
well heck u guys are asian.. do u think ur home or thing in ur home smell?.. what about when u go out to a friends house of a different ethnicity?... do like white ppl's house smell? .. latin homes?... african american homes?.... i think it might be our culture and the thing we keep in our house... but yeah next time i bring my friends to my house i'm gonna ask themif it smells... *watch them say "no" just to be nice*...
JDORAMA project.. visit a friend/co-worker home that u've never been to and see if there is a smell....
*edit* to me white ppls and black ppls... and hispanics homes do not have an arouma... only asian ppl's.... i have some trinkets my friends have given me.. and they have the same arouma as their home.... but've gotten used to it ^^
