Niko,
You got that right ... he da man! Applaud Tell ya, if he hadn't set me straight, I'd still be looking for the wrong type of DVD player. Shake Head But now, I've seen the light and am towing the straight and narrow path. Good

Ladies, you should be! Mr Green He might have graduated from college with a HP calculator on his belt, but now he owns his own company, drives a Beamer, wears Armani suits and has Fortune 500 companies calling him for consultations. Cool! Damn, if I'd gone to college with him, I'd have listened to him then ... instead, I just push numbers all day, drive a 15 year old Honda, wear JC Penney suits and nobody's calling me anything except dull. Ouch!

Oh jeez. Sweat

I did have a TI calculator hangin' offa my belt in high school, but that's about the only truth there... My Bimmer is ten years old, and I wear jeans and t-shirts/polos to work.

Armani??? Pssshhhhhh.... hehe

the DVP642 does handle region dvds, and can play PAL on NTSC TVs just fine.

Trust me.. I've tested mine quite thorougly.
yeah, i checked itout last night and it handled my jpn dvds just fine. the only gripe about this player is that the remote control/interface is kind of limited, and no ogg support, but otherwise a very good player indeed.

Hey Niko,
Glad to hear your Panasonic's working alright ... I"m leaning toward getting that myself. Have to hold off on it for a short while though b/c of a few other expenses that arose unexpectedly. It'll probably be another 3-4 months before I get it, but it's definitely on my short list.

You mean Philips, neh?

3-4 months? Hmm. The way consumer electronics are constantly evolving, that model might be obsolete by then... Sad

Yeah, I meant Phillips ... Shake Head
Don't seem to have much choice. Real life gets in the way sometimes Aaargh! and unfortunately, I've got a few extra unexpected expenses that have to be taken care of. After that, I have to save up a little in order to afford it, so it looks like it'll be about that long. Oh, well ... hey, maybe I could get someone to give me a donation. You wanna start the ball rolling? hehe

Not surprising really. No DVD player can do it all apparently. Sad

Well, I haven't tried it on mine yet, but numerous people at dvdrhelp.com have reported various "issues" with divx/xvid playback and that firmware upgrades have been lacking and/or nonexistent... Sad

I use my LiteOn more for the Region Free and PAL conversion playback than anything else...

personally.. I think that xvid can go to hell. What I call it is software development gone out of control. You have like what? atleast 2 different developers going in their own direction, and then what? 4 different version of the codec that doesn't even seem to work properly. Then you toss in the problem where it green screens you. Ugh.. total and complete nightmare.

yeah, what sux about that is that some xvid will play, some won't. the thing is, it's 50/50 that it plays or not, so you won't know if it's playable until AFTER you burn/waste a cd for that....

I've currently using DVD Region Free with no problems... It just allows your DVD playback software (WMP, PowerDVD, etc.) to play DVDs from other regions....

Now if you use a firmware hack to your PCs DVD player, you could screw up your player if you hack the firmware incorrectly.... But software hacks only affect software, so no damage to your player will happen...

Good luck! Smile

A bit late in thanking you bmwracer.... I'll probably get the software you mentioned. I'm dying to watch my dvd I bought with the region 2. Thanks Big Grin

To save yourself grief, could you possibly convert the xvid to mpeg, which is much more standardized and stable?

I just picked up this unit. Works as advertised. Can switch regions at will with remote, confirmed it works for region 2. Setting to region 0 does not necessarily make it region free as posted, sometimes have to set region to specific region, 2 for instance. One Divx or XVid DVD my friend gave me has problems playing, will have to look into what format it is. Other 3 seem to play fine. It is supposed to be able to convert between PAL format. And it's cheap!

i think if it has to come to that (covert to mpeg), i'll just say "eff it, i'll watch it on the cpu."

to encode avi files, it can take a whole day an episode. Sad
