Thing is, is it a mildew-generated smell or is it process-related to the book/magazine...
I can tell the difference between the two... It's probably my years working with comic books and newspapers. Mildew has a more natural smell, and it isn't a bad smell - it's just different.
Process-related (or I refer to this as chemical-related) smells come from either the ink used, or bleach that's used in the paper itself. Chemical-related smells is quite obvious because it's more pontent. If you sniff it for awhile, you may get a reaction from it, such as a headache or it'll make you noxious/dizzy/etc. In other words, it's not good for you, so don't smell the stuff for a long time! I do notice that certain freshly printed Japanese newspapers in Japan has a very strong chemical-based smell. I recently received a package from Rinkya, and they used newspaper for padding. Opening the box, I nearly passed out from the smell of the newspaper.

And I wouldn't let the sun beat down on a photobook or something similar: it'll fade for sure...
I said "a day or so". That's not long enough to do any fading on photobooks. I have every Sakai Noriko book, and I've practiced the sunlight technique on them, with no fading effect. Unlike the ink and paper used in magazines like People or TIME, the quality of the ink/paper in the photobooks is a lot more durable.

I gotcha. You're talking about the outgassing of the solvents used in the inks and stuff... Most likely carcinogenic in the long term.

Well, I wouldn't risk it regardless of the time period. A cool, dry place away from the sun would be my preference...

I've noticed that whenever anybody gets home in a drama, they say 'Hi, I'm home!" even if no one else is there. Is this a Japanese custom to say "Hi' I'm Home." every time you come home?

Maybe they don't know if anyone's home, so to play it safe, they still say "tadaima!"

Yes. It's just a traditional way of doing things. Like saying Itadakimasu before you eat and saying Gochisosama after you eat. Stuff like that. _________________

Thanks for the info. One of my favorite parts of GTO is watching Matsushima come home. Always make my teeth sweat!!!
Man, I don't know ANYTHING about this show . . . but, gaijin mark gets the JDorama poetry line of the day award with that "make my teeth sweat" line. What a great, inventive line.

WHAT?!???!!!???!?!?!?!?!?!?
Are you serious? You gotta go rent it. Japan Video next to Likelike Drive Inn. For the whole series, you could rent it for about (guesstimation) a little over $10.00 for a whole week!
Go go go on your lunch break today! _________________

Hahah, yeh, maybe. I know I must needs see this one. Think KIKU-TV will show?
Also (and I know I just posted the following at another thread), About 8:00a, Hawai'i time, today, I just picked up both dailies . . . and who do I see a-walkin' in my direction? None other than AHOCHAUDE (we've met before)!!! Both of us in shades, looking like a Ray Ban ad or something (actually, I had my Wayfarers draped around my neck).
Talked story (over construction noise), had a few laughs. Discussed the board. Nice, sunny day.
Folks, Ahochaude is a well-dressed, well-groomed man.
