If the match to which you're referring is to the 1,000-meter short track speedskating competition (from the 2002 Winter Olympics), Mr. Niko2x, The Man SAW that one, and, right before the last turn before the finish line, it seemed that, starting with a chain reaction involving skaters just flailing around, S. Korea's Dong-Sung Kim, actually, bumped into Apolo Anton Ohno and, I think the latter even sustained an injury from one of the skate blades, even .
Thing is, Ohno got right back up and skated through . . . to win the silver. He got a couple golds himself in that Olympics, too, and, look for his name in the Winter Olympics coming up in a few years .

That reminds me of Oakland Raider fans who say the referrees are out to get them.
Yeah, the Koreans still hate the Japanese, since Korea spent almost the first half of the 20th century as a Japanese colony.

yeah, I'm pretty sure it was actually the other way around guys. I was watching that myself, as I'm sure most viewers of the olympics at the time were; it was supposedly one of the biggest races of the entire Olympics so I can't really forget it. And post-race, there was this whole outrage over the South Korean guy because he knocked Ohno over or something and it almost ruined Ohno's chances of medaling(sp?). Can't wait for the 2006 Olympics btw. Anyone know where it's going to be held? I heard it's somewhere in Italy which is pretty cool. I seem to like it when they have European locations for the Olympics cuz they always have those great panoramic shots at the beginning of the telecasts, primetime or otherwise and you get to see the beautiful European landscapes. Case in point, Athens. That was definitely one of the things I'll never forget about the Athens Olympics, definitely the scenic locales the competition took place in, aside from the Irish guy and the gymnastics controversies. They really made me want to be there, competing or spectating.

Whoop-de-do. Hamm gets to keep his gold medal.
He may have been vindicated by the Olympic court, but he'll always have that albatross hanging around his neck.
Please. He'll always have that albatross? Says who? Am I to understand that the win can't be accepted when the win is validated? The court is "more correct" if they decided to take the medal away from Hamm?
Tthe one thing that'll disperse the "Hamm doesn't deserve the gold medal" set is when they're offered up the question, "despite what you think, can you seriously deny that Hamm is one of the top athletes in gymnastics?" Because, bottom line, he is a great gymnastics athlete; there's no question about that. Indeed, watch the tape -- that S. Korean doesn't do as well as Hamm's performance.
No asterisks here -- his gold medal is the worthy of all; HE was forced to validate it. And, he did, IN THE LAND'S HIGHEST COURT FOR SPORTS ARBITRATION, no less. Let's talk about the golds that were earned controversially in this past Olympics; how do THOSE athletes validate their win by an objective party?
No asterisks here -- gymnastics scoring is still controversial; I asked it once, and I ask it again; does this recent mis-scoring by gymnastic judges mean that past Olympic gymnastics scoring be audited, which would include a review of respective footage as well? Play "musical chairs" with past medalists? Are all of those past competitions asterisked, then, if past scoring can be proved as erroneous? They very well might be; who's willing to state that the 2004 Olympic gymnastics competition scoring was the ONLY one in history that was mismanaged? Hamm's gold is in the books as much as any other gold medalist's gold is in there for the men's all-around.
No asterisks here -- this vindication is of the highest order. The win MUST be accepted. The IOC has stated that he deserves the medal WAY BEFORE IT WENT TO THIS INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION and I have NO doubt there are consequences for those within Olympic circles if they decide to authoritatively ignore that win.
Do you REALLY think he won't be offered any color commentator deals for the next Olympics (or any other big-money deals, for that matter? Do you REALLY think he'd be offered the same money if he gave up the gold?)? Oh, but, it won't be with the "big three networks" you say? In the words of BMWRacer, whoop-de-do.
Regardless of whether he earns a penny, face it -- there are no asterisks here when it comes to substance.

I couldn't find a Olympics thread (probably doesn't exist), so I'll post it here.
From Yahoo! News:
London Upsets Paris to Win 2012 Olympics
SINGAPORE - Britain vs. France. Blair vs. Chirac. Two historic rival cities convinced they were long overdue. London prevailed — upsetting Paris to secure the 2012 Olympics. The British capital overcame its cross-Channel opponent 54-50 Wednesday on the fourth ballot of the International Olympic Committee vote, capping the most glamorous and hotly contested bid race in Olympic history.

It looks like I'll be in London in 2012.
I was happy to hear the news about London winning the 2012 Olympic bid. I thought it was going to be Paris, which would have been good too. The last time London hosted the games was in 1948. Congrats London!

Yeah, it kinda sucks for Paris since they will unlikely get the 2016 games (it would consecutive Europe cities), and will probably have to wait until 2020.

Yeah Paris had their last Olympic games in 1924. It would have been a perfect time for them?
I am just glad that NYC did not win their bid. Yes I live close by, but there was too much political in-fighting and no consideration towards the public as to where to build the stadium. Greed did not win out this time!

I see your point but it would have been nice to be able to fly to NY for the Olympics. I could have easily volunteered also. Oh well, I'll try to volunteer in London. It's only 7 years away. Europe here I come.

No, but would definitely enjoy the experience. My first opportunity would probably be in Vancouver in 2010.
*As a side note, could a mod move the Olympics talk from the Europe thread here? Thanks*

i'm really sad about paris. NOT!
it's no secret that france and britain haven't always seen eye to eye but i think london was surprised to get the olympics. i wonder if mr chirac's public comments made about britain damaged paris' bid?
let's face it france had the world cup recently which they won so they shouldn't be too disappointed.

Your wish is my command...
In fact, since we have three different Olympic threads floating about, I will merge all of them into one "official" Olympic thread talk. _________________
