Big waves are on the North Shore. I think Waikiki is known for its little waves... _________________

thetenken is right. north shore is usually where the big waves are. south shore (waikiki) is a little more timid. there are times in a year, however, that the south shore has its swells. but i don't remember it ever getting as big as the north shore (30-50 ft waves).

Yep. South shores are FLAT. ...bummer.
On another note, I was a "wall rat" back in high school until I was about 20 or so. I was at "Walls" almost everyday. I used to like to "bomb". hehehehehe. That was fun. I quit surfing and bodyboarding. Could never get better. _________________

i saw a newspiece about that bird too. it's really sad, since the one that they had died, and they can't find the other two!
i'll see if i can post the lava flow from where i was standing. i'm talking about as close as you are to the monitor. it was pretty awesome. heat was incredible. i was really surprised they allowed you to go so close. if you tripped or something...

Yeah, it was really noxious out there. Got right next to a cooling lava flow...
If I had tripped and fallen, that's like 3rd degree burns all over! _________________

Yeah, when I was on the big island way back in '96, the sulfur fumes were pretty overpowering at times... And the lava flow messed up one of the roads, which kept us from visiting Hilo...

... and people still continue to build houses in that area. ok, the volcano area, is a national park, and if you ever see job openings for a park ranger or similar, working at volc nat park, there is always a 'warning' at the top of the vacancy.
basically, the warning says that long-term effects of breathing in sulfuric and volcanic ash has been inconclusive (yeah, right), and you're assuming all risks. what a job!

ok, here's a test. my first time uploading pics - so bear with me.
when i visited the big island, i was pretty lucky in that kilauea was going off at the time. thetenken, the next time you go, see if you can visit it at night - the scene is unbelievable.
i don't believe i used zoom in any of these pics, so you can imagine how close you can get to the lava flow. although the heat was so intense, you kept a safe distance anyways....
