If you don't care for any data on the computer, it is a "relatively" easy process to install a new operating system.

Normally, I agree, except that this is an old laptop, so you'll probably have to use an older OS. And I think getting the right device drivers for laptops on older OS can be more challengine and downright irritating....^_^;

mmplayer os x has worked for pretty much everything. i can play pretty much any divx/xvid files on it. once when i was playing an .avi and the sound was sorta screwed up, but i restared my ibook and it was all sweet. i didnt download the prog myself, one of my freinds put heaps of progs on my ibook when i first got it. well i am pretty sure it will work anyway.

Hi I have a Macintosh and finally got DSL and thus was able to BitTorrent my first dorama (YAY).
While VLC is nice, I would like to watch this in my living room TV in either VCD, SVCD, or DVD format.
Can someone recommend to me good software on the Macintosh that will allow me to encode avi to VCD, SVCD, or DVD? I tried looking into iVCD or Roxio Toast 6, but not sure if those will work.
Your suggestions are appreciated.
What you could do is use iDVD or iMovie However, your Mac OS X installation must be able to handle XviD/DivX within the QuickTime 6.x environment (iDVD and iMovie supports only QuickTime).
Personally, I've never done an AVI -> MPEG-1/2 conversion on Mac OS X. Thinking it through, it'll involve several steps:
1) Demux the audio/video into two separate files.
2) Convert the video to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 (VCD=MPEG-1, SVCD/DVD=MPEG-2)
3) Convert the audio to either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. This is a challenge because the source audio could be anything -- AC3, MP3, PCM, etc.
4) Mux the converted audio and video together into one file.
5) Import the file into iMovie, iDVD or Toast Titanium.
Some hints:
- 3ivx Delta 4 will enable XviD/DivX support under QuickTime. This will allow you to use any QuickTime-friendly tool and it'll read the file.
- Most open-source or freeware video/audio processing tools run on FreeBSD. If you find any of these, you can compile it within Mac OS X using GCC. You more likely won't have a GUI unless someone out there writes one.

Thanks Groink! That's quite a detailed helpful explanation.
I think I'll go with 3ivx Delta 4. Do you know if I need to get the Pro version of Quicktime or can I use the free one that came with my Mac (I'm running OS X 10.3).
Thanks.

You know what? Let's ignore 3ivx Delta 4 for now. Check out ffmpegX:

Thanks a lot for your help, groink.
I got the 3ivx and Divx doctor. I then "doctored" those avi files.
Then I bought Toast Titanium and it's really easy to use.
Now I can watch on the TV!!!!

Got tired of waiting for x8 speed dual layer (DL) DVD burners to come out, not to mention the DVD media. Besides, the x8 DL blank DVDs will be expensive.
