In my opinion, he isn't extraordinarily good looking, in fact he isnt even conventionally goodlooking, lots of other Japanese celebrities are better looking than he is. As a singer, his voice is so-so too. He's cute and charming though, and very charismatic. A real spellbinder. He draws the audience to him like I haven't seen anyone else can. The previous poster was right, that is the reason why he's so popular.
He's being horribly typecast now though. Always the "hero." I suppose because those are the kinds of characters his fans want to see him in Given the depth of his talent though, I think he needs more variety in the projects he takes and the roles he plays. Right now, I don't think he's living up to his great potential.
i agree with what you are saying. i have the same perspective on Kimura-kun. people please don't get me wrong. i am a really huge Smap fan. i watch Smap like every day and if i miss one day of watching them, forget it, is like miss them a lot. don't know why has this kind of effect but that is how it is. once i started watching them i couldn't stop. anyways Kimura-kun is okay and yeah he is always the "hero" of everything. even when he went on a game show, he has to win. even in Bistro Smap he has to win. it's like he must be "winner" all the time. sometimes when other Smap members finally win, get really happy for them. they all work hard too and they are also very talented. Kimura-kun is not the only talented one. yes, he is smart, but i think he needs to learn to be more gracious and humble when he wins and when he loses. he needs to accept losing sometimes. i think that is one of his flaws is that he is a perfectionist and he has to realize that it's okay not to be perfect and win all the time. but i guess it goes back to the time when he was a kid, heard his father was really strict. but in general, i like watching his dramas. still my all-time favorite Kimura-kun dramas are Long Vacation, Love Generation, Concerto. he is an okay actor and has more potential than what the scripts are giving him to prove his acting skills. it is definitely true and obvious of his charisma and he totally lights up the screen and stands out. when see him, all eyes are on him, it's hard to not watch him.

to date...PRIDE ranks the highest....being the hopeless-romantic that i am, i can't help falling in love with Halu evrytime i watch this....next would LONG VACATION...i love the piano parts...it's a little melacholic but whenever i rewatch it, it always warms my heart that they ended up together, i'm a sucker for happy endings! aww i wish there'd be a sena for me lol!...i love BEAUTIFUL LIFE, yes, it's such a classic beautiful love story...next would me MILLION STARS FALLING FROM THE SKY, i just finished this this morning at 4pm...and whew this series gave me the creeps....so unpredictable, dark and tragic....i saw a very different kimura-kun here...so dark & cold yet vulnerable & soft...a mixture of emotions and suspense, twists and love....i hardly breathe every after episode.....LOVE GENERATION is another feel good series, i love teppei & ricko's bickering & bullying until they both eventually fell in love with each other...he he he i told you, i'm a hopeless romantic....next would be HERO....it was soo entertaining that the series is more of a group credit rather than being a sole kimura-kun series......my last choice would be CONCERTO..i don't know why but vannessa williams' rendition of 'alfie' sounded soo sad and whenever the credits rolls i can't help but sigh.......
i know this thread is ranking kimura-kun's best series, i'm sorry if i mentioned them all...i just love all his series.... :

Because of the lame subs I think people are taking Pride too lightly. KimuTaku was awesome as the star hockey player and the chemistry between the leads was completely magical. I had to watch it twice straight thru. _________________

I have only seen 11 of Takuya's doramas but still it's LONG VACATION for me followed closely by PRIDE primarily for the feeling of shiawase-ness it gives me. Just like Leyy, I want the happy endings. I would have appreciated GIFT more if it was sub-titled in English.

I love the parts kimura takuya has! He acts so well in pride and good luck! I'm addicted to him! But i think his singing so-so only la hope he will produce more drama series soon!
yeah his singing is definitely so-so only smap did "hana" at the 2003 music station super live and the performance was...horrifying. They could barely manage to stay on key. I've seen some slightly better performances of the same song in other shows, but still just ok.
I prefer Kattun's cover of the song at the starship countdown MUCH better. Which is kind of sad, since it's a smap song. And it's too bad, cause Hana is a very pretty song.
Yeahp, Long Vacation is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE! It is (arguably) the best dorama ever made! Love Generation and Beautiful Life are (although pretty distant) seconds.
I didn't like Pride though To be honest I thought it was too forced, too unreal, too stereotypical, too...kimura takuya-glorifying mighty-ducks parodyish. Basically, IMHO, the whole series was one big bad hockey cliche. The support cast was pretty bad too. Only Takeuchi Yuko's always refreshing presence saved that series for me.
Good Luck was in very close danger of being just as bad as Pride was (Kimura-Takuya-Glorifying)...the informative bits saved it though I liked how, watching it, I learned alot of behind-the-scenes details about passenger airplanes and the people whose work revolve around them.

Currently he's involved in a new drama titled "Engine" and it will be airing in Japan on April 18. =)

I would respectfully beg to disagree about Takuya's singing.
Maybe SMAP as a group's singing is so-so but Takuya by himself sings pretty well to me. I have heard him do a very soulful rendition of Let It Be in one smapxsmap special years ago. His solo song in the Pams album called Shiosai had his voice crossing back and forth to falsetto and he did it quite well. Most recently I heard him sing Wonderful Tonight in Goro's bar and minus the heavily accented English, I found his rendition quite good.
Personally, I think he sings to adjust to/blend with his group otherwise he will always stand out.
Actually I would *somewhat* agree with you, he does have the best voice in the group (2nd is Shingo <3) And he has had good moments...I just watched a video of the 2003 FNS this morning and he was the only one who did justice to that Hana song. Really really pretty song.
His voice is off sometimes though, but you're right, it could be partly because he tries to keep to the level of the other guys in the group Still...nothing great though, still mostly so-so (his singing voice I mean)...
