Yow, there seems to be a consensus on how average Steamboy is... Is it because it's being compared against Otomo's famous/classic Akira or Miyazaki's stuff?
Sure, why not compare it to those? Miyazaki is probably the gold standard to which any big anime will be compared. And Akira was Steamboy director's other well known movie.
I don't find Steamboy to be a bad movie, just not as compelling as the others mentioned. Another reason is that I don't find the steam technology background to the story that interesting. It featured some fantastic contraption called the "steamball", which I thought was kind of silly. But I think they had to come up with some "tech" factor that could also be used in a somewhat comical fashion. Hence "steamball". Meh.
Another anime (series) that took place sort of in the same time and place is "Nadia: secret of Blue Water". I would actually prefer that over Steamboy. It had more daring adventure, more interesting personal relationships, better villains.
It also was sillier too, in parts, but it was aimed at a young audience.
I also wish they chose to use a more vibrant color palette. I think they chose muted tones, grays and sepias to give an older time period look. But I like bright flashy things.
I found the movie a little bland, but I did like the eyeball licking. There was also some eyeball licking in the Boogiepop movie if I remember correctly. I don't think I've seen this happen anywhere but in Japanese movies.
I've been wanting to watch this movie....do you know how to obtain a copy of it with English subtitles? I've been wanting to watch this because I really enjoyed Yoji Yamada's previous samurai movie "Tasogare Seibei."

Japan dvd has been released in Japan, the retail version includes English subtitles. Yesasia.com and cdjapan.co.jp carry the movie. This is only a hearsay, Universal Pictures has bought the international distribution rights, so a cinema release is possible. The previous movie, Twilight Samurai, was internationally acclaimed. You'll never know.
Speaking of Twilight Samurai, I haven't seen the movie myself. I'll just head over to the video rental shop to obtain the copy after work.
Thanks, I was thinking about making a couple more animated gifs from Swing Girls. It's my new favorite movie. I watched the "making of" video the other day about how the girls (and boy) all went to music cram school and really played the music.
Pretty cool. I was impressed.

Thank you for taking the time to help out with the information I appreciate it. Actually I found the Hidden Blade online and I just saw it yesterday...it was pretty good. Thematically though it is SO CLOSE in nature to the Twilight Samurai it almost feels like a continuation of the same treatment Yoji Yamada gave to the subject in that film. The Twilight Samurai is a better film and although I like Matsu Takako very much I LOVE Rie Miyazawa (!) and she was spectacular in Twilight Samurai, alongside Hiroyuki Sanada...so watch it, I believe you'll enjoy it

Total agreement. As much as I liked The Last Samurai, Twilight Samurai seems more faithful the time period (post-Tokugawa/pre-Meiji)...

Shinji Takeda's also pretty good in Happiness of the Katakuris. And somehow, you know what? I have ended up with a Shinji Takeda CD . . . he plays saxophone. And he 's pretty darn good.

The movie I pair with Twilight Samurai isn't The Last Samurai.
It's When the Last Sword Is Drawn.
To oversimplify the plot... basically take a poor Samurai like Sanada Hiroyuki's character in Twilight, put him in even more dire financial straights, and have him run off to join the Shinsengumi, in a desperate effort to feed his family.
A few of the guys from the NHK TV series are in the movie, though playing different roles.
But the lead... the star is Nakai Kiichi, and man did he do a great job.
The movie has a slightly different take on the Shinsengumi as well.

during my teen years, i watched this movie called 'satomi hakkenden' (legend of eight samurai). some have called it the 'star wars' of japan. good special effects (at the time), and a great storyline. fell in love with it.
in any case, i just saw a preview for a movie that looks like it's the same genre. samurais with magic, etc. it's called 'ASHURAJO'. has anyone heard of it? looks pretty cool. wish i understood japanese so i could know what the preview was talking about!

i saw hakkenden the anime many many moons ago..i liked it i heard the japanese text that's it's based on is quite loooooong but yet to be translated in english...the name escapes me at the moment.

Hmm, there's been a guy on eBay selling a Japanese-released, English fansubbed version of that movie (and many other Japanese titles)... I've bought stuff from him in the past (Gun Crazy, Twilight Samurai), and the stuff is excellent quality.
But it is essentially, for all intents and purposes, a bootleg. Don't know how you feel about these kinda things...
