In Hawaii, a tap kiss on the cheek is a frequent gesture. However, I haven't seen much "tap kissing" on the lips. Sweat Beaten

the hug is even more common. some of the jp people that i know observe it in wide-eyed horror. didn't realize it was such a big deal to them.

Yeah, Japanese have their own "bubbles". They don't do much bodily contact unless the person is a real close friend or relative. Although nowadays, they seem to be lightening up to the subject/gesture a bit. However, the old foogies, (like my in-laws hehe ) don't practice it at all.

I've heard of that term "fogies"... to refer to old folks, old people right.

Funny I don't mind the Japanese guys who do tend to have the "femine" features. Especially Johnny's Entertainment groups. Living in Hawaii I never see guys who look like Yamapi, Takki, etc... Most people I know always say they look like girls. That's the first thing they say when they see a picture of one of them.

By the way I think it's ok to check out other guys/girls.... nothing wrong with looking even if you are married.

ha, that's so true. the younger generation of jp nationals that i know have adapted to this local hawaiian culture. for the older ones, they back off when you come at them. then you have to chase them around the room with arms wide open.

that's only happened once or twice. hehe

doch: if they're unaccustomed to it, it'll show. i wouldn't even suggest trying it with the older generation. when i was in japan, i didn't hug anyone goodbye or hello (like here in hawaii).

There are a lot of 4th and 5th generation Japanese-Americans in Hawaii. Not uncommon at all. Heh, but it's Hawaii. Go figure. hehe

What do you call those "guys" again? Oh yeah, meterosexuals, eh? hehe
The reason most guys in Hawaii say they look like girls is because of their style.
Look at a lot of the guys in Hawaii, heh, they call it "style" when you wear your board shorts, rubber slippers, tank top or wife beater, have either a shaved head or a "buya" and talk pigeon.

A meterosexual are dudes like Justin Timberlake and those dudes from 'Nsync and Backstreet Boys. Dudes with style. Not to mention those are the kind of dudes who care about pedicures and manicures and plucking eyebrows, etc. But are straightm however.

A wife beater are those tight white tank tops. The ones that are kind of like an "underwear quality tank top". Those tight white ones you see a lot of locals wearing. The ones that they tend to wear under their T-shirts.
