It just seems like it has to be the ISP doing something if: 1) it worked fine for you before, and you didn't change anything on your PC, 2) it's also happening to others.

I wouldn't reformat your PC, that's pretty unlikely to be the problem Smile

Can you try to find one of those "bandwidth tester" WWW sites to see what they say your upload bandwidth is? That won't tell you anything about BT, but it will tell you your base TCP networking speed. BT is a user application that uses TCP protocol. If the bandwidth tester tells you that you have a good upload speed, then for sure you don't need to format your PC or change your modem.

Anyway, I would be very interested in hearing if anyone solves this problem. It's sort of mysterious.

(I just reread this thread and realized this was probably a reply to me ... oops.)

BitTorrent software needs to use one or more ports on your PC so others can connect to you to get stuff from you while you are getting stuff from others. Normally the ports others use to get stuff from you start from the number 6881, this is the default for BitTorrent. But you can change it to anything you like, most BT clients allow you to change the port range in the preferences settings. See the help for the client you use for how to do that. For example, I use the original BT client (version 4) and you type CTRL-S for the settings screen, click the "Network" tab, and enter a new range in the "starting at port" field.

If for some reason others can't connect to the ports you specify that means no one will be able to download from you. You'll still be able to download from others, but your download speed may be adversely affected.

I did some web searches and maybe there is an answer.

Apparently some ISPs like Maxonline use a transparent proxy for port 80 (www) traffic. So, if a tracker runs on port 80, when you connect to it, the tracker will think the proxy's IP address is your address. The tracker then tells other BT clients the proxy's address, not yours, and no one ever connects to you to download, so you never upload, and it's just like having your ports blocked, even though they aren't. Cool (not) Sad

Ok, so I read there is a partial solution, you can go into your client's preferences put your IP address into the field for "IP to report to tracker" (that's what it's called in BitTorrent 4.0, it may be something different in your client). This may fix the problem with trackers that understand this feature. If anyone is still having this problem, give it a try and I'd be interested to know if it fixes things. Good luck.

I look like such a thread spammer today. Oh well, network problems just get me curious. Smile

Lucky me then. ^^" I'm on Pacnet Broadband.

A few of my friends have ran into the same problems using the same cable connection you guys have. Was originally thinking maybe it was the version of Bit Torrent they were using (coz' they were using the early stages of BT) as it may not have been compatible. But when they changed to the newer versions, the same problem existed.

Oh. A little off-topic, I saw a recent ad for the Pacnet Cable Broadband. Could I ask if having this has anything to do with similar cable piping like SCV? Because I'm staying on landed property...

I actualli called Maxonline technical support and they told me that since that cable incident they were diverting the connections using another cable..so therfore connections to some overseas website(or downloads) will be slower....i dunno how long they will take to repair the cable bt my brother says it may take a long tym....thats all i know

Hi,

Need some guidence. I've been using ABC for quite some time now but thinking of using another client recently.
The reason is because I find that ABC is kinda slow. I've only been getting 20kb max download rate. My online speed is 100mb.

So, my questions are
Is it normal?
should I switch to another client or just stick with ABC?
Or is there anyway I can increase my download rate?

It seems to me that the download speeds in BT are less dependent on which client you use, and more dependent on the swarm you have connected to. If it is a small swarm and the seeder is slow, then it doesn't matter how fast your network connection or client is, the download will still be slow.

I imagine some clents may do better under adverse situations though, but it isn't easy to run a controlled test to find out which ones those are Smile

So what I would do is first try to confirm if ABC is really a problem by finding a torrent that has excellent seeds. If that goes fast, then you know that ABC is at least capable of downloading fast under optimal conditions.

Then, if you are still unsatisfied, pick another client that has lots of users, like Azureus or BitTornado, and give it a try. You should be able to use 2 clients at once, if you want to compare them side by side.

Yeah, more than likely your download speeds are not based on the client you use. However there are plenty you can try, just Google and pick one to try. Maybe you'll find one you like better in general.

There are many possibilities for slow speed, here are some:

Ports need forwarding or reconfiguration/Firewall or Router
Bandwidth throttling (I've been getting this hardcore lately! rant )
Lousy seeds
Upload is capped too low (usually the slower you upload, the slower you download too)

You should close everything (BT client, clubbox, other p2p stuff) and do a bandwidth test. Try doing natcheck too. Here are some links for you:

I recommend to use BitComet!
It's very good in my opinion. ^^ But speed problems sometimes are due to the causes of firewalls or changing the port # in your bit-torrent client might work.

Currently using TorrentStorm which I highly recommend. Easy to use and lots of nifty functions though i'm pretty sure most of them are available on alot of the other BT clients as well. I had the same problem with the slow download speeds before, but after being enlightened on the little port forwarding trick, downloads have increased in speed tremendously. ^^

edit: meant torrentstorm not bitTornado Bonk

I've tried a ton of clients including Azureus, Burst, ABC, etc, and I've found that BitComet is my favorite. It has support for unicode torrents, uses up a ridiculously low amount of memory and CPU usage, and as of the new version, supports tracker-less torrents.

i agree, i use bittornado too.

seems that bitcomet has the highest vote, but why dont you try both, and see which one you prefer to use for a longtime.

Thanks KouSeiya315 for the links and everyone else for helping me out but now kinda dizzy with all the port-IP-firewall stuff Sweat
Gonna go read more on those stuff Bonk

--EDIT--

Finally decided to use BitComet. The download rate is much faster then ABC but not as fast as I want it to be, I'm willing to let it go cos I think its because the low seed. Downloaded an anime earlier with with alot of seeders finished in about an hour or so. So, I guess its fair.

Try to do the port forwarding thingie but cant seem to get through to my router. Guess I just have to live with the current download rate.

Anyway, just wondering what download rate do you guys get in avarage?

Thanks u guys. I've been looking around for a client to use. Don't wanna just download any without having enuff information on other options as well. Hmmm, maybe that's why I'm so slow in all this hi-tech stuff. I've been struggling to understand what torrent is all about. No matter how many Help sections or BT guides I read, I still don't understand y I must seed, how do I seed, and y am I ul when I'm dl.

Confused, confused. Maybe I'll just have to go ahead and try it rather than worrying ceaselessly about it.

O yeah, I think I'll try BitComet.

Am using ABC now and its working fine. But since so many recommend BitComet + the possibility that the dl might be faster, most probably will try downloading it for some test trial Fingers crossed

I use the official client. I haven't tried other clients so I can't comment on which one is better than the other.

When i first started using torrent i use ABC then Azureus and now I ended up using BitComet.....
As my connection is behind a firewall... among these three I think BitComet is the best option for me... heheheh
