We are 2 frenchies, 2 frog-eaters. There is another one fan of L'arc-en-ciel, but he is not a very active member.

Thanks 86. Been a while since I had time to full on moderate the forum. Doing a little forum clean up tonight because I noticed it's been getting a little messy. Sweat

Merging with the above mentioned topic.

There's a pen pal thread as well: http://jdorama.com/viewtopic.php?t=5394&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=pen+pal

Gomen. Sweat

Since the topic has "Japanese" in it, I'll move it from General Disc. to the Learn Japanese forum and merge it with an existing Japanese Pen Pal topic we have there.

Hi,
Here is a website that helps to find penpals to practice foreign languages :

It's an online and free language exchange community.

does having a penpal actual help in terms of learning the language because writing to someone in a language you dont kno isnt that hard you just have to take your time and its quite easy to type especially with online dictionaries and translation software tools so what exactly are the advantages.

was just wondering Yeah

i kno i probably sound like an idiot to those who have had penpal but hey i dont really get the whole thing Bonk

dictionaries and translation software don't always get what you want through.. it's all literal there. having a penpal reinforces your studies of the language by giving you an opportunity to use the language much more frequently than you would if say.. you were just learning the language during your free time. penpals also are great for teaching you popular words and phrases which probably aren't found in any dictionary or translation software. also most translation software will translate directly into kanji whereever possible. what's the fun in writing what you can't read? Beat You try taking yourself away from using shortcuts like translation software. dictionaries are fine since these are things even native speakers will need and use. penpals also expose you to their culture more. helpful if you plan to visit one day. writing helps.. trust me. i've already started to forget katakana because i almost never use it anymore. and there's nobody to speak japanese to after i went to college so my vocabulary sucks too. frequent use will never hurt.

not sure if i can revive this thread, but....
i think having pen pals from Japan and maintaining them as pen pals takes effort and patience. One thing i am learning is that it can be challenging keeping them as consistant pen pals. Email a bunch and maybe a few will remain your solid pen pals, after time. It is also good if you can chat with some of them through instant messenging, but the challenge is not only the language barrier and taking a chance in chatting online, but the time difference as well. Bonk
