Lions sign QB Chang to deal
Pontiac, MI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Lions announced Friday they have signed free agent quarterback Timmy Chang to a contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The former Hawaii quarterback became the NCAA's career passing yardage record- holder this past college football season. He finished his college career with 16,251 passing yards and 109 touchdown passes.
Chang, who went undrafted this year, originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals but was released on August 9.

I have talked to a couple of players who were on the U of H football team for about half of Timmy Chang's career there. They had nothing good to say about him regarding his character, his off-the-field habits, and his attitude.

I got faith in the TC. Yeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh, how many QBs who start slow end up becoming successful? Maybe a certain St. Louis QB who came out of nowhere (well, actually, from one of the off-continent leagues). Oh, oh, how 'bout a certain New England QB? And just WHO was that guy who followed Joe Montana?
The Man says Chang will start slow. And . . . I mean, hey . . . gotta' give a guy a chance to actually play, right?
Oh, yeah, forgot to say, I'm back. Hey, ya'll.
One more thing: WEST OAHU LITTLE LEAGUE ARE WORLD CHAMPS!!! CHECK YA'LL NEWWWWWWWWWWSPAPER! 6-6 TIED ('GAINST DEFENDING CHAMPS CURACAO [and would you believe it? You pronounce "Curacao" as you would a certain famous Director Akira's last name. Hmmph. Interesting, no?] LITTLE LEAGUE). WHAT WINS IT???? A HOME RUN, A HOME RUN, A HOME RUN!!!!! (just one, actually, not three, sorry if there's some confusion here. Ichi ma de.).
Oh, one last thing, UH Warriors (see my icon? 'Tis the UH Warrior athletic icon ) v. USC Trojans football this weekend. Warriors going WIN this weekend. You heard it here first!
Oh, yeah, forgot to say, I'm . . . oh, I already said already, yeah?

I read where Timmy Chang got cut from the Lions. I think he was there for only about a week. You know, there have been more outstanding college QBs who haven't made it in the NFL than at any other position. Just off the top of my head: Jason White of Oklahoma, Eric Crouch and Tommy Frazier of Nebraska, Charlie Ward of Florida St. (yes, he went to the NBA, but NFL people weren't high on him anyway) Gino Torretta of Miami, Andre Ware of Houston, Jack Thompson of Washington St., Sonny Sixkiller of Washington, Jack Mildren of Oklahoma, Jerry Tagge of Nebraska, Nolan Cromwell of Kansas (although he did make it playing defensive back) Rick Leach of Michigan, Rex Kern of Ohio St., James Street of Texas, Gary Beban of UCLA, John Huarte of Notre Dame, Terry Baker of Oregon. . . . Over half of these guys won the Heisman Trophy, over half of them led their teams to national championships, and all of them had superb college careers. It's just that their game did not fit with the NFL's. It still doesn't diminish their great accomplishments in college; they didn't suddenly become bad QBs; the NFL is just a different game.

USC 63, UH 17. Bad News: It could have been worse. Good news: It wasn't worse. And what's with that Hiram Peters. After making a good play by tackling Reggie Bush out of bounds, he gets in Bush's face and starts yakking like there's no tomorrow. Does he really think he's such a hotshot, that he can intimidate a player of Bush's caliber, that he's been somehow offended because SC is moving the ball? I notice Peters wasn't doing that crap in the second half as the score mounted.

Fantasy Football?
Not me. But I did just fill out my first football pool of the season, so images of brilliance rewarded are dancing though my head.
Of course, I always end up losing money. But this is the time of year when my picks seem brilliant, and my team, the 9ers, seem destined for greatness. (To me, anyway.)
I see 9 possible wins on the schedule for the Niners this season, so I'm playing it safe and predicting an 8 & 8 season.
It might be a little rough getting back into the swing, since I think the team will open the season 0 & 2. But things figure to pick up by the third game.
It's kind of a neat feeling. This is the first time in years that I've felt like the Niners were traveling down the right road. _________________

Moss and Collins could work out, but i haven't seen any raiders preseason so i wouldn't know how they play together. Sadly I can't help but get a little excited about my Chargers this year which will only set me up for greater disapointment when we tank the 2nd half of the season, limp into the playoffs and get crushed. Oh well there's always college football, but with the trojans looking really really in their opener, that might become unbearable for me too. I'd prolly give anything to see UCLA crush SC, but i think i'll settle for a bowl victory from my bruins this year.

I've never been a Collins fan. I think he has all the tools to be a great QB. But none of the intangibles.
Gannon, on the other hand, wasn't very big, didn't have a great arm, didn't have "the tools"... but he did have all the intangibles. Smart, tough, athletic, determined.
Collins and Moss will look terrific -- on occasion -- but I don't think they'll go down in history as one of the great passing combinations.
You do, however, have one of my favorite running backs working for you this year. Jordan. This guy is something. His only flaw, as far as I can see, is his blitz pick up, and blocking skills. But I expect him to get better as his playing time increases.
JERRY RICE RETIRED TODAY
Damn, it was fun watching him play.
Hopefully that genius York will sign him for a day and allow him to retire as a Niner. _________________

Geezer, I sure hope so. Most (if not all) of his receiving records were done in a 49er uniform. It would shock and greatly disappoint me if they didn't do this.

Ah, but it's York running the show.
I still haven't gotten over the fact that they told Jerry "no way" when he said he'd like to sign with the Niners this year for his last year.
You look at the money they're spending trying to rebuild interest in the team. Trying to keep their fans, after the last few miserable years. And they walked away from something that would have guaranteed butts in the seats. The Jerry Rice retirement tour.
And who better to tutor a very young and inexperienced group of recievers on the ins and outs of playing in the WCO, than Jerry Rice.
I understand that Nolan wanted to make the team his own. But turning their backs on Jerry was just dumb.
I'm excited about the direction the team is taking. But I still think York is an ass. _________________

While reading today's SJ Mercury, sports writer Daniel Brown says the following which disturbs me:
Quote:
...
[Coach] Nolan said Monday that the team offered Rice a chance for a ceremonial contract so that he could retire as a 49er in the spring. He said they cautioned Rice at the time that there would be no such offer extended in the fall when the roster spots were settled.
...
Unless something changes in the upcoming days, it sure looks like Rice will officially retire as a Bronco.
Jerry Rice probably won't get the chance to sign a one-day contract and retire with the San Francisco 49ers _ not this season, anyway.
The NFL's career touchdowns leader left the Denver Broncos on Monday, announcing his intention to retire after 20 seasons. He spent his first 16 years with the 49ers, winning three Super Bowl rings and becoming the career leader in every significant receiving category.
Rice also told reporters that retiring with the 49ers was "the next step" in his departure.
But because Rice waited to make his retirement decision until after final NFL roster cutdowns, the 49ers would have to release a player from their 53-man roster to sign Rice to a one-day contract _ a ceremonial gesture extended to several players in recent years, including Oakland's Tim Brown and Buffalo's Thurman Thomas.
When asked if the NFL might make an exception in Rice's case, 49ers coach Mike Nolan scoffed.
"It's not like the NFL to make an exception for anyone, so I don't know that they would," Nolan said Tuesday. "We haven't talked about petitioning anything at this point. We want to respect Jerry Rice and anything that might be his wishes, but at the same time, we're in the process of putting a football team together. We don't want to compromise anything on the team."
An NFL spokesman didn't immediately return a call seeking comment, but the league previously has said no special privileges will be granted for one-day contracts.
When Rice decided to return for a 21st season this fall, his agents repeatedly spoke with the 49ers about joining the club for one last season. Though San Francisco has one of the NFL's least impressive receiving corps, Nolan wasn't interested.
"My interests go to the 49ers organization," Nolan said. "Certainly Jerry was an intricate part of the success that built this franchise, but my focus is on the current players and staff. I think it's important that we honor and respect Rice. He's due for that, but my focus has to be on this team and (making) sure I take care of the family at hand."
Rice, who still lives a short drive from the 49ers' training complex, spent 3 1/2 seasons with the Oakland Raiders and part of another with the Seattle Seahawks before trying to make Denver's roster this summer.
He said earlier in the year he considered himself "a 49er at heart. I'll always be that."
