I could only remember there were two cuteys in Hikaru Genji, Akira Akasaka and Atsuhiro Sato. Perhaps for that Otokogumi guy would be Kenichi Okamoto. The cutest in shonentai was Higashiyama Noriyuki
Well..Valle..I'm still in my late 20's now so I don't think I might be as old as your mum.
It happened by accident that I started listening to J-pop when my cousin who just returned from Japan gave me a cassette tape of "Hikaru Genji" and Akira Akasaka picture. I was in Junior High School then when SMAP was still Hikaru's back dancer.

I actually don't use email, I use irc and ftp for sendin or receiving files.
Btw can mp3 be sent thru email? I'm kinda outdated when it comes to email. Can anyone suggest decent free email services, requirement: not being drowned on the stupid spams. Thanks!

well it only took me a year and a half to make my first post, hopefully it won't take me as long next time. Here is a list of dramas / artists combinations where I enjoyed both the drama and the theme song.
GTO - Takashi Sorimachi - "Poison"
Virgin Road - Namie Amuro - "Can you celebrate?"
Omiai Kekkon - Takako Matsu - "Sakura no ame"
Majo no joken - Hikaru Utada - "First Love"
Yamato Nadeshiko - Misia - "Everything"
Friday's Lovers - Glay - "Happiness"
Wedding Planner - Chemistry - "Kimi Wo Sagashiteta"
101st Proposal - Chage & Aska - "Say Yes"
Over Time - The Brilliant Green - "Sono speed de" & Yuko Yamaguchi - "Believe"
Beautiful Life - B'z - "Konya Tsuki no Mieru oka ni"

You can't go wrong with any of her albums because they're all good. It's hard to recommend one over the other, but I personally think "Let go" would be a good starting point.

It's funny: there is a large population of international students at my college and, more specifically, Japanese students usually ranging from ages 18-25. At any rate, I always joke with them and ask them if they like Kinki Kids and X Japan, two obviously very popular JPop bands on this forum. 100% of the time, the response is, in somewhat jagged english, "No way!" Some even go as far as saying they hate them.
Just thought I'd let you what's not popular in Japan. From what I hear, Utada Hikaru is safe.
Sometimes it seems like we just take and digest anything that has a Japanese stamp of origin and make it our own. Ultimately, the decision comes up to you, the "consumer"/downloader.

i don't think it's really that bad.. these japanese people who live in the us don't really count as people like kinki kids still sell great number of singles in japan.. topping the charts every single time.. popular music like from hamasaki ayumi, smap etc. still sell..
