Actually, Hollywood has been doing that for a while: Fistfull of Dollars is a western remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo and The Magnificent Seven was a remake of Seven Samurai, so it's not a recent phenomenon...
That's why Kill Bill doesn't really blow me away like it does other people, 'cause I've seen similar (and better) in The One Armed Swordsman, The Yagyu Conspiracy, and Shadow Warriors I-IV, to name a few...
To be fair, though, I'm sure the Asian filmmakers have copied a lot of Hollywood stuff as well, but we don't notice it as much.
Actually, everybody steals from everybody else.
Yes, "Yojimbo" was later remade (In Italy and Spain) into "Fist full of Dollars" And then it was made again in 1996 as the Bruce Willis movie, "Last Man Standing." But did you know that Kurosawa got the original idea for "Yojimbo" from a 1930s pulp story by Dashell Hammet (the guy who wrote the Thin Man books). It was one of the "Confidential Op" stories (In its setting, "Last Man Standing" was much more like the original story than either of the first movies.).
There have been some fantastic film makers coming out of Japan.
Everyone knows Kurosawa. Mostly for his Samuri movies. But he also did some brilliant 20th century stuff, especially right after WWII.
For stylish hard boiled detective fiction, take a look at Seijun Suzuki's work from the 50's and 60s. He was amazing. (Just as he was getting to be a big deal, the studio he was under contract to went porno, and he went to TV) And he's still working! He put out a strange and stylish movie called "Pistol Opera" about two years ago, which is a remake of one of his earlier films.
Masauki Suo has done some terrific work recently, including films like "Shall we Dancu".
And Shohei Imamura is an amazing film maker / story teller. Films like "Unagi" and "Dr. Akagi" come to mind.
Horror Movies, and Samuri movies, get most of the notice when people talk about Japanese movies. But film buffs know that Japan's film industry really has turned out some world class talent, and some world class work.

You're absolutely right. There are directors besides Kurosawa, who's name and legacy has transcended film itself. Beside the director's that you mentioned, I've got DVDs and LDs of films from Inagaki Hiroshi (Miyamoto Musashi, Duel at Ichijoji Temple (Ichijoji no Ketto), Duel on Ganryu Island (Ketto Ganryu-jima)), Ozu Yasujiro (Tokyo Story (Tokyo Monogatari)), and Mizoguchi Kenji (The 47 Ronin (Genroku Chushingura))....
Lotsa great stuff out there if you know where to look.
-love letter(didnt understand)
-dark water
-all ring episode
-brotherS(yes i like this storyline about yakuza, acted by beat takeshi aka takeshi castle master)
-shuto kousoku trial
still finding:-
-april love story-
-tokyo monotogari
-juon 2 with bm/bi substitle

Well, the Tokyo Monogatari that I'm talking about was directed by Ozu Yasujiro in 1953 (?) and is in black and white... I've got the two-disc DVD from Criterion... Are we talking about the same movie?

Tokyo Monogatari by Ozu Yasujiro is VERY famous. Not alot of western viewers can take the pace though... very slow.............ultra slow...........extremely slow..... Excellent movie! Anyone who is interested in the film making side of film should know Ozu Yasujiro. He is famous for breaking the 180degree line in his scenes. And his maticulous attention to mize-en-scene! You should check it out.

You're right on the mark, malorum. The pacing is slow and the story is rather uneventful, but I was totally into the movie... I think you have to really appreciate movies to enjoy what this film offers: the camera shots, the pauses between scenes, etc. Like I said, an excellent movie.
thanks. I'm trying to learn photoimpact/gif animator that's why i keep changing my ava and sig. Too poor to buy adobe photoshop...
Photoshop is overrated. It's got way more features than what most people need... And it's way overpriced... I only use it 'cause I got a copy from someone...
