the thing is in the JPN society (and korean as well) many parents put their kids in music program (piano violin being the most popular) to better their kids in learning capabilities. It seems that music is related to memory/learning, so that is why A LOT of people there grew up laerning to play an instrument.

Ive got one!

One of the characters is in danger of losing thier job (usually beucase they did something rogue or took the blame for something they didnt do so someone they know wouldnt be in trouble) and then at the company meeting to decide the characters fate her/his friends or family or coworkers or community (or all) show up with signs and stories and end up saving the persons career with thier heartfelt bows and pleading.

they make it look so easy to be forgiven for things, as long as you had your heart in the right place... oh... and have lots of friends.

Churasan, Wakaba
Girl leaves home, tries to maintain a long-distance romance with her childhood sweetheart, matures out of it, and meets a roguish fellow in her new place who turns out to be her true love. Dancing

In police dramas, the "interrogation" consists of police officers asking the perp if they committed the crime. Nothing sophisticated, no cross-questioning, nothing. Must be a great place to be a criminal. ; Yeah

Obviously a common theme is individual versus the group, and lately, overcoming the bad economy. U Suck

I'm also noticing that many of the contemporary "family" shows usually feature a hot suburban wousewife or two. I dig Wakaba's mother, for instance. There was another show (Urara?) many years ago about a girl who becomes a carpenter, her mother was in the same league. Bang Head

hmm how about the unlikely hero that tries so hard to succeed in his career or fulfill his dreams. but then, OH NO! he get's injured and ppl wonder "will he be able to continue with this injury?" and then he does. or the guy wasn't doing his thing with his "heart" and then changes and he's successful. the guy is usually very good to start with but then he meets a rival that is way better and sees that he's been lacking something

examples

good luck
pride
engine
fireboys
h2

also the misfit that turns out to be a genius or something and is unexpectedly good at his professional job and everybody's alway like underestimating him/her

examples

handoku
tiger and dragon
hero
dragonzakura
gokusen
gto
engine

I love this thread...

To add to the "girl/guy running after someone" theme... 50% of the time, that person gets HIT by the car, and they cannot meet. This happened in two dramas that I can think of off the top of my head, Refrain and Ima Ai ni Yukimasu (the movie).

Also, did you notice that in the dramas, especially the detective/crime dramas, that the "good" people commit homicides, while the "bad" people commit murders? As in the "good" people kill people in self defense, or accidently probably when they are pushing each other and they fall and hit their head, and really didn't mean it, while the bad people out right murder them. This happens in every episode of Hagure Keiji, and every other Mystery Theater (on KIKU-TV) that I see.

hiii! i love this thread!

lol i agree to this: No Japanese woman is capable of running more than 100 feet in any direction before falling down.

and there's this super ability of the male main characters in jap shows that enable them to accomplish impossible tasks. i know it's actually quite common in other dramas too, not only jap ones. but i guess it's because jap dramas are always very short, so their main characters seem to be able to accomplish anything. i gets very predictable sometimes. but what i think makes up a typical jap drama is not the predictability, but good acting, meaningful/touching/interesting conversations between characters.

for examples like good luck and pride, star no koi, koi ni ochitara, the endings are quite predictable. but they are good dramas cuz of the many things we learn from the meaningful conversations.

You can almost always expect a flashback montage in the final episode, mostly before the "kokuhaku" (confession of love). Puppy Dog Eyes

YEAH! I realize that they always have to run to a certain place. They don't want to use like a car or a bicycle, at least. And they don't even "appear" as tired as they should be when they finally arrive at their destination. It's quite humorous if you think about it.
