I think those roles are by choice: Up until the success (a best actress award) of Kurokawa No Techo, I think the Japanese public viewed her as just a pretty face with no acting chops...
So now with these serious dramas like Haru to Natsu and Nyokei Kazoku, she working on changing that image and gain wider acceptance as a serious actress...
