What does Finland have to do with it? Not all the Finns have wide knowledge on Japanese culture, same thing applies to the other foreign citizens. It's about individuality, some know, some not. I can assure you the teaching level is excellent at schools compared to the other countries. Basic knowledge is richness!
You have any knowledge on Finland? Prolly Nokia rings a bell.
Yes, Finland is badly known around the world especially in the States. Ppl are still misled about Finland being a part of Russia or Finland is in Russia. Polar bears live in the cities, the cities are more like villages, a Soviet era society etc. These are only urban legends.

I don't think it was meant as anything against people from Finland or anything. It's just that in America, the term "Jap" is considered a racial slur, much like the "N" word used for African Americans here. It has a derogatory meaning in the US, which is not something that people who don't live in the US would necessarily know.
The word "Jap" was used primarily during WWII, not only for Japanese nationals, but for Japanese Americans, who were discriminated against and wrongfully interned, which is another reason why the word hits such a strong nerve in all Japanese Americans (like myself).
It has nothing to do with educational background or anything like that. It has more to do with familiarity with the culture (just like the middle finger is bad here, but people in Japan use it to point or use it to say, in sign language, "aniki"), so I don't think it's "basic knowledge" for anyone outside of the US.
We know that people don't necessarily mean to use "Jap" in that way, but because of the stigma attached to the word, primarily in the US, people who are PC don't use it.
I hope I didn't offend anyone here! I majored in Japanese American history in college, so I just want to help clarify things!

Whoa, whoa chill out... Look, I didn't mean it as a slight... I think you read too much into my statement: I wasn't saying that Finnish people are dumb or something... You yourself said that "Not all the Finns have wide knowledge on Japanese culture (see your quote above)" and that's what I was saying...

You're right on the mark, tsuyoshi. Thanks.
Besides, why in the hell would I want to zing a newbie? I just wanted to let 'em know that "jap" wasn't an acceptable term, that all.

No problem, bmw! I don't want any misunderstandings here--'specially since I'm a newbie, too!
Anyway, I like your "Gun Crazy" animated gif! Crazy! Have you seen the movie yet? I'm a fan of Yonekura Ryoko (well, I think she's SUPER DUPER HOT) and Kikukawa Rei (she's SUPER DUPER HOT, too ). If you have, where did you see it? Did you buy it on DVD? WHERE?!?!!?
Beautiful women, guns and explosions! What more could I ask for? ...Well, a couple million dollars, but I'll settle for R&R (Ryoko & Rei) gunplay!
Pardon for my over reaction. "Being from Finland, you couldn't have known", I just reacted to it as if there was no life or knowledge in Finland. That's all, I didn't mean any harm. Let's hope this misunderstandin is resolved.

Any fan of Ryoko-chan is a friend of mine. Yep, I've seen the movie a number of times. Actually, dozens of times. (my review: http://bmwracer.blog-city.com/read/153904.htm) I bought my English-subbed copy on eBay... Being the sick, obsessed Ryoko fan that I am, I later bought the original Japanese release (with interviews and stuff) from yesasia... If you're interested, I could make you a copy of Gun Crazy... One hitch: I don't have a DVD writer, so my copy would be on VHS tape... Gomen nasai.

Oh yeah. Girls with guns. A killer combination. Have you ever checked out The Long Kiss Goodnight or La Femme Nikita? They're pretty hot as well...

It's cool, Pemu. No harm done. I got sorta miffed that you'd think I'd purposely insult someone from Finland or any other country for that matter...
Actually, I really like Finland... Two of my favorite Formula One drivers are from there: Mika Hakkinen and Kimi Raikonnen (hey, their names rhyme! )...
Glad to hear this little misunderstanding has been solved
Hehe! "nen" names on the end are very common in Finland. Nen equals to "son" as Johnson, "O'" as O'Malley or "Mc" as McBride.
Mika Hakkinen was cool! I followed every single race during his golden years! Raikkonen lacks carisma, he's too boyish for his age. He stutters as he's speakin which is kinda annoying (puberty not over yet?). Mika's "Finlish" (Finnish-English) rocked as he gave statements I quit following the Formula One since Hakkinen retired. Ferrari and Schumacher had been dominating ever since, F1 lost its interest.
Btw Williams driver position is open in the season of 2005 as Montoya leaves Williams for Mclaren. Bmwracer, now's your chance to apply for the position

Yes. Let's get back to talking about women, er Ryoko-chan...

So desu ne! Good to know. I was wondering about that...

As much as I like Mika, Ayrton Senna is my absolute favorite driver, bar none. He was fiery and arrogant, but totally dedicated... To see him drive for pole position is an unbelievable experience... Despite Schumacher's records, Senna is the greatest F1 driver in history, IMO.

Montoya is a fantastic driver. He just missed out on the Championship this past season... Williams is making a mistake... Me? I'm too tall to be an F1 driver, but thanks for the suggestion.

I think Coulthard is gone.
I don't like McLaren currently because they have Mercedes power... I absolutely loved McLaren when they had Honda power... It was the greatest combination in history, I think, partiuclarly in 1988...
Yes, it is. Pretty pricey, hehe, everything is pricey. At least I got this movie for free Leeched Takeshi Kaneshiro'sTurn Left Turn Right as well. Dunno if it's good, will watch it this weekend. Azumi, prolly tonight
Just finished Azumi! Wow! Loads of swordfighting scenes and they are awesome!!! A one man army-battle scenes! Tons of corpses on the way! blood is everywhere! A fast paced electro music! The camera angles, sugoi! slowmotion la Matrix was neat! A silky smooth choreography except Aya isn't agile enough. Quite long it was, approx. 140 mins!
It's been a while since I watched japanese movies. if you've seen Versus, Azumi is one step ahead of it.
Btw an actress Ryo got a cameo appearance in the movie, hehe.
Turn Left Turn Right is next. Gonna watch and delete it, runnin outta space
