Thank you very much ! The translations are great! They don't just try to translate the sentence for you, furthermore they expalin all words so you can get the meaning of the sentence yourself.
The test is splitted into the sentences and then you get the translation of the word's dictionary form (no matter which form is used in the text) Applaud Applaud Applaud very helpful !

In case you guys didn't know... JDorama.com's dictionary database also originated from Jim Breen's JDIC.

Yes it's a dictionary not a machine translator. Machine translators for Japanese are without exception crap and should be avoided. This on the other hand is a really useful tool. The hidden translation option is quite nice too (not as good as rikai, but still useful). You can also get some offline tools which use edict which are handy when you can't get online.

Hey all.

I found a great web page that translates Japanese character text into English. I know its not perfect, but I thought it would help those who, like me, are beginning to learn Japanese and would like to have an idea of what others on this site are writing in Japanese, when they write it.

http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/cgi-local/breen/wwwjdic?9T

All you need to do is have support for Japanese text, copy the text from the board, or wherever, paste in the dialogue box, and click translate.

or you could just use the babelfish system from altavista.com - that's been around for a very long time.

There's already a thread for dictionaries, so I'll merge the two.

This is the one that I rely on the most as a resource for when I translate:

I use a really good dictionary that you can download free. It's good if you don't always have internet access. When you search (in either kanji or kana) it will tell you the word in kana and kanji, and on the left side it has all the kanji the word is made up of as well as the meanings. Another thing i find usefull about it is that it kindof gives you an idea of how to use the word, like when i type in 'shika', it tells me it's a particle and means 'nothing but'. It can't get much better than that! You can also download different dictionaries.

give it a try.

There's already a thread for dictionaries, so please check before creating new threads.

You may find some answers in here.
