This is my update regarding the "Kimtaku ad spotting" in Kyoto.
Just as in Osaka, no Kimtaku ads anywhere. Probably because Kyoto is also situated in the same sort of area, therefore it is not a big surprise. I did see a Yuko Takeuchi ad on the train though (actually advertising for the train company). _________________
Mmm... That's interesting. Though, perhaps it also has to do with overexposure. If a face is everywhere in advertisement (or in every show), it will lose impact.
With the Smap-guys being on constant display for fifteen years, I wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese are sick'n tired of seeing their faces all over the place.

I was in Fukuoka last year for the smap to ichatta concert tour and racing my way amidst about 65,000 of people of all ages and I mean from babies to obachans...i figured smap is popular. They filled up the Fukuoka Dome 4 nights in a row! And the most uchiwas that you will see are Takuya, Shingo and Nakai, in my honest opinion.
My friend was just in Tokyo last week and she was asking directions and befriended this young girl of about 18. They got to talking about idols and my friend said she liked Takuya Kimura. The Japanese girl started going crazy and clapping and kept saying "Takuya Kamura! Kakkoii".
Really hard to say that they are NOT popular anymore if its just based on the presence of billboard ads. _________________

that's a very good point but i believe they release this survey every year regarding how popular celebrities are and kimura takuya is always near the top so that guy HAS to have his face plastered somewhere...perhaps not in kansai but maybe more in kanto, in and around tokyo....also in magazines, perhaps.
SMAP, Aya Still Rule the Roost
SMAP's rule of the showbiz world shows no signs of fading. The 5-man pop group easily topped this year's TV commercial popularity rankings, and the individual members took the Top 5 of the male star rankings. Katori Shingo (28) pushed Kimura Takuya (33) out of the top spot for the first time in 3 years, followed by Nakai Masahiro, Inagaki Goro and Kusanagi Tsuyoshi. Fellow Johnny's Jimusho band Tokio, band member Nagase Tomoya, and gangly comedy duo Ungirls also made the rankings. The most popular female star was last year's No.3 Ueto Aya (photo, 20) followed by 2004's top star Matsuura Aya (19). Kuu-chan, the oh-so-cute Chihuahua from the Aiful commercials, was the most popular character.
Overall
1. SMAP
2. Katori Shingo
3. Kimura Takuya
4. Nakai Masahiro
5. Tokio
6. Ueto Aya
7. Inagaki Goro
8. Matsuura Aya
9. Kuu-chan
10. Kusanagai Tsuyoshi

Wow. A big fan there.
Maybe their publicity campaign is over. I mean, they usually doesn't last long and they cost a lot of money. Just for a billboard in Time Square it's 2 to 5 millions $ a month. _________________

i think smap's popularity is far from fading. they did bring in the highest ratings during kouhaku this year. 49% i think? koda kumi's performance brought in the second highest rating during the show.
hmm just imagine it this way, the fan mania is 100 times crazier than kat-tun's. watching their concerts, you can see those fans go freaking crazy for smap.

Overall, Shingo got no.2. No.1 spot goes to Takayuki Yamada. But in the popular votes, Shingo is no.1! Yay!
And whoever says that they're not popular anymore? _________________

Mmmm... I think that popularity and overexposure are two things. It's like ice cream... its a favorite food, but too much of it will spoil the fun. However, if you don't eat it for a while, then you get hungry for a cone of icecream again.

My friend was actually surprised. She's 36 years old and sort of keeping mum on who she likes but in the middle of their sign language conversation they somehow got to the topic.
You're right the publicity blitz does not last that long. My friend was actually expecting to see billboards of SMAP since Dear Woman was released only on the 19th. Then Oricon would report that their single debuted at No. 1. Again, one can only shake her head. _________________

Thanks Tabana (and MissMonika)!
Number 2 in it's second week is good Maybe it will have staying power. It can be easier to debut nicely, but the longer something that can stay in the top slots is probably a better test. So here's to hoping (even though I don't like that song as much as others LOL).
Is the music video out of Dear Woman yet? I've seen a "promotional video" for it...is that the same thing? _________________
