I just e-mailed this guy who lives in Tokyo...when he writes back with an answer I'll let you know.
Thanks a lot! I'm looking forward to the answer XD
Memory cards aren't really expensive here...about 25 Euros for 1GB.
From some source i've heard that there will fit about only 200 photos on 1GB...but I should try it out by myself, i hope the cam arrvies tomorrow
The bigger problem may be the size of the videos.

You're d*mn right! This is the reason i've stopped videoshooting
I'll be there for 4 weeks, with an average of 25 pics a day I will take about 700. But who knows, maybe it will be many more.

yeah....i like to take pictures but i don't like stopping all the time to take photos of every little thing...because then it takes the joy out of the trip and you can't relax and enjoy yourself. i see your point about wanting to take a portable hard drive....if your pix are going to take up that much memory...you should take a portable hard drive or USB flash drive. if you're going to there for four weeks you'll probably take over a 1000 photos.
on a side note, well since you're going to be in Japan for a while I recommend the following travel guide to Tokyo...it's pretty interesting and has many recommendations and lots of information. it's very cool and emphasizes traditional cultural sightseeing spots as well as fun modern places to go.

The new "Iceberg" building in Harajuku has a complex geometry which reflects light from all angles. This is helped by putting silver inter-layers in the glass on oblique angled sections – giving the flat glass a three-dimensional quality. It is the brainchild of Tokyo-based British architect Benjamin Warner
Arigatou, I'll check the links and add locations to my rough visit plan XDD
I haven't seen this review site. It reads 322 images on 512 MB; i hope i'll be fine with 3 or so 1GB cards. And when they are full, it will be easy to get more in Japan, I hope.
Anyway, I will take the HDD with me, if I want to start excessive videoshooting X3
Something else: Do the Japanese wall outlets have grounding contacts? Otherwise i have to saw off the one on the power plug for the HDD

How long are you going to be there for? Unless you are there for an incredibly long time I think 2 512MB SD cards or conversely 1 1GB card will more than adequate storage space for your photos...that much storage should allow you to take about 1000 photos
I had a canon digital camera with me and 1 512MB compact flash card and I was able to take about 500 photos over 2 weeks time.
edit: I just saw prices on the internet for 512MB Secure Digital Cards for 20 US dollars or less! If you wanted to go crazy you could get 3 cards for your trip and then for sure you probably never run out of storage capacity.
i had a few 128mb cards..and maybe a 256mb, it lasted me thru out the trip, and i took 700+ pic's, and some video...
I suggest a camcorder for video, cause the video i took with my digicam wasn't that great.

i bought mine back in Apr '03, that sony cybershot is weak now....,
they got much much nicer ones for a good price and the memory cards are now 2gb or more.
my next trip, i am going to save up, and get a nicer digicam and hopefully borrow my dad's camcorder to take video.

What's funny is that I can't identify which anime character they are trying to portray and from what anime did those cosplay came from _________________
i don't think they are all necessarily anime cosplay character but i see your point
Oh I see. Because when I hear/see the word "cosplay", the first thing that comes to my mind are people wearing anime characters costume _________________
That's because the dress of the characters in that anime is easy to find, and the hair isn't that difficult to do
yeah...
there were a lot of different anime cosplayers around the expo during the 4 days i went...
can't believe that there were over 25,000 people there..
i am thinking of going to this years...if it is online registration and the wait in line will be very minimal....cause waiting in long lines suck...
