As far as I can remember, I don't recall seeing 3-pronged outlets in Japan, just 2-prongs. You should be able to purchase a 3->2 prong adapter so that you don't have to physically remove the grounding pin.

Still I can't believe that grounding for devices with metal parts outside isn't mandatory in Japan, isn't even supported, as it is here.

careful planning for a year? wow, when i went last year, i did it on a month's notice...lol
