I was hoping someone could answer a question I have about Japanese culture.

Traditionally, in Chinese families the parents take very good care of the children with the expectation that once the children grow up they will support and care for their parents. I learned that the concept of living in a nursing home, which is not strange in America, is very strange in traditional Chinese culture. I also noticed that in many American families the kids are on their own once they reach 18 because the culture is more oriented around the idea that individuals should be reponsible for their own future. I think the difference between Chinese and American culture is due to Confucian ideas.

What about traditional Japanese culture? Do the parents invest a lot of time and effort in caring for their children with the expectation that once the children grow up they will be reponsible for taking care of their parents?

I think that in Japan (Korea now as well) there is a going to to be a big problem with the senior citizens in the future. There is a shrinkng population issue in JPN and being that JPN women nowadays are contributing to the low birthrate by delaying marriage and having kids as much as possible. (related thread: Japan needs more babies)

What does this have anything to do with the older population? there will be a lot less kids to take care of the older parents. Another thing that comes into play is that the JPN population has the longest life span in any population. Japan Number One in New eHealthy Lifef System

I don't know about other JPN families, one thing I gotta mention is that, as far as my family goes i don't think that my in-laws expect us to take care of them, but it may also be one of those "unsaid expectations".

Some points to ponder about,

- niko

I enjoy the 'attempting' era of making kids, not necessarily coming out 'victorious' and making one.

I heard that in japanese families the father earns the money and the mother takes care of children and household. So the mother doesn't go back to work after the first baby's birth.
