I was hoping someone could answer a question I have about Japanese culture.
Traditionally, in Chinese families the parents take very good care of the children with the expectation that once the children grow up they will support and care for their parents. I learned that the concept of living in a nursing home, which is not strange in America, is very strange in traditional Chinese culture. I also noticed that in many American families the kids are on their own once they reach 18 because the culture is more oriented around the idea that individuals should be reponsible for their own future. I think the difference between Chinese and American culture is due to Confucian ideas.
What about traditional Japanese culture? Do the parents invest a lot of time and effort in caring for their children with the expectation that once the children grow up they will be reponsible for taking care of their parents?
