is ok.. my friend... me as more technical guy i know the amount of work you need to put in order to convert the drama from your LD to digital format and all the effort you need to copy down all the original subtitle from your old vhs and then type it all out again..goash.. i certainly don't have that kind of commitment therefore, i urge all the members here to start appreciate his work more instead of complaining all the time... I agree with your previous statements.

Should have warned you about Krys. His posts have always had the taste of a troll, full of sarcasm and criticism. He hasn't shown any appreciation to other ppl's works and yet still mumblin about "you may steal others ppl's works" to the forum members even though he "steals" the works as well and praises "the art of a leechin"= caps download, once done, cancel seed. I smell hypocrisy.
Just a troll, ignore his posts. Don't let his comments depress you, just keep on as usual and be yourself.

A word of warning againt Pemu.
He is actively supporting stealing of some goods and then selling them. What is more he is trying to convince everyone that such dealings are fine.
And this is what is really bad. When you are going to commit a crime, you should be aware that it is a crime. Pemu and ones alike try to create an illusion of justification: "It is all right. Everybody does it. Theft? No way! You are allowed to take things from those funny little yellow people. Whats more - be proud! Praise yourself and pals. Leechero-praido!".

That is just the way of this goody-goody moronish leechero-preacher.

Seeding of episodes 1 and 2 are on d-addicts.com. It's been awhile, though, so it may be difficult to find anyone to seed these two. I'd be more than happy to seed ep1 and 2 this week. Just reply to this thread if you want to give d-addicts.com a try.

BTW, folks, I am actually working on episode 3. When it'll be available, it's hard to tell. The positive energy's coming back. The couple of weeks off from the project did some good for my overall well being.

It'll actually fit on a 80-min 700MB CD-R. You'll need to burn it to the disc as a SVCD. However, if you just want to store the MPEG file on an ISO-formatted disc.... Well, can't help you there! Sad

Yes, it'll fit! Weird, yeah???? But remember you need to burn it to CD-R as a SuperVCD or SVCD. Things like Nero, Roxio, among others are capable of making SVCDs. Check out the following links for more information:

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/svcd

http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/burnsvcd_nero.html

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/nerosvcd.htm

An ISO-formatted disc is a CD-R that contains computer data, such as applications, photos, word processing documents, etc. Also, if you store a bunch of Jdorama files onto a single disc, more likely it's in ISO format.

Hi Groink,

I think it's great that you are doing this for fans. A lot of us have those old run down tapes that a quality version is definitely needed. I just found this thread but anyway, it looks like many people are happy. Keep up the great work with the fansub.

groink: try capturing to avi format??? theres some good codecs out there that save disk space and look flawless (huffyuv, morgan). i myself use the morgan codec with my matrox card. that way you can do more filtering with the raw files. mpeg2 is already a compressed format so filtering is a little bit hard to do afterward. that way you can mess with the settings/filtering. and itll look flawless. but it does take up more space than mpeg2 (45-60 minutes = 5-6 GB, with medium settings)

What PC software are you guys using for your subtitles? Unfortunately for the Mac (w/o having to spend a lot on Final Cut Pro), subtitles are done via Quicktime Pro or iMovie. With my subtitles via iMovie, I'm limited to 4.28 seconds of keeping a subtitle up which is more of a pain in lyrics but ok for anything else. Also, I don't use Quicktime Pro because I can eliminate problems of placement and timing...but with iMovie...it's easier to place subtitles and timing is not a major issue...but once you put your subtitles in...and you complete everything, there's no going back to fix things. Also, a problem is that DIVX (via Quicktime) is yet glitchy for Mac's, thus I have to save things via DV then convert to MPG or MOV.

As Bill Clinton would say, "I feel your pain."

Yes, I'm actually a mac geek myself (so much so, I own the domain name - macgeek.org). I tried my best at sticking with the Macintosh platform for all of my video editing, but to no avail. iLife (iMovie and iDVD) are great tools for someone who has a DV camera, and just want to blast the contents to DVD. In the subbing world like we're doing, these tools reek!!! Sad Apple just came out with a new iLife suite earlier this week, and I'm going to monitor what improves they've made to iMovie and iDVD.

As a result, I'm now doing all of my video capturing and editing under Windows. I still use my Mac as my backup capturing machine (only in MPEG-1 though). The tools and hardware on the PC side is much more affordable on projects like these where there isn't any money to be made on the finished results.

For subbing, I could have used something that specializes in subtitles. However, there are three basic things I want to achieve:

1) Flexible placement of text ANYWHERE on the screen.

2) Ability to perform special effects on text if I wanted to (fading in/out, animation, etc.)

3) Have multiple lines of text being displayed at different rates. UTSR episode 2 is a prime example of this, where I displayed the artistes names but at the same time display the song lyrics, both popping up at different rates and at different places on the screen.

With that, I ended up (note the "ended up" phrase I use) using Pinnacle Studio 8.6. What I did with the package is create a custom template containing all of the text styles that I use in the subs. The software is very slow because it tries to cache everything in RAM. So, for example, if you try perform any kind of editing, sometimes you have to wait a few seconds before you can gain back control of the PC. Also, the right-clicking of options is totally lame or non-existent! Coming from a Macintosh background, we mac geeks expect consistency across different applications, and in the Windows world, you don't have this. Other than that, Pinnacle Studio has great text capabilities, and excellent video codecs when exporting (supports DV types 1 and 2).

InterVideo DVD Creator 2 would have been a better choice for stability and ease of use. However, their text templates are really bad, and at times they don't even work out correctly. For example, when you use a bottom centering text template, it looks good on the editor, but on the finished output the fonts become twice as large. I contacted these %&$@! several times about this, and they've never said anything. Sad

I chose to stick with MPEG-2 for two reasons. One, anyone can play these. Though some people need to get a video codec, that task just takes a few minutes. Any form of AVI packaging, you're asking for trouble with compatibility. Though most PC people can play an AVI package, what it contains can be somewhat confusing. And, most mainstream DVD players can't play AVI because of the lack of DivX or XviD video codecs them. Though I own a DivX player myself, I think I'm in the very small minority. My goal is to reach the largest audience possible. Even those without a PC - if they want a copy, I can arrange for distribution via snail mail. On-line downloading size, ability to play only on PC, etc. aren't considered in this project because I'm basically trying to keep compatibility with the masses, and at the same time retain that A grade.

Man, I'm rambling on too much!!!! I'll stop right now!!! Bleah

Hi Groink,

Well, good news is geethree.com released new subtitling plug-in in their latest slick iMovie plugin volume and another software for iMovie. I haven't purchased it yet but it seems I maybe able to get away from the 4.28 second limit and have control where I can place the subtitles.

If you need help finding certain translations with Hitotsu Yane no Shita...I happen to have an old-bad quality video that I taped years ago that I can look at if need be. If you're planning to do more drama classics, let me know, I have many of the older dramas Eng. subtitled that I can refer to if you choose to subtitle them.

Glad to hear you've got the inspiration back for the project.
Watched the second ep a while ago, all I can is WOW! Really, it's absolutely superb! Hehe, enough with the praising.
Long hair seem to suit Yosuke, the baseball cap backward hehe I'm beginnin to fall for Noriko Lovey Eyes

Is this a real threat to Oyaji which I consider the best family drama. Can Oyaji be dethroned? It remains to see, hehe.

Thanks for the splendid work and series!
Btw Just ignore Krysa's upcomin comments.

Well, so far episode 3 is rolling along. I have at least one scene that needs translation. More may be needed later on... I have two versions of UTSR, and both of them had this scene cut out.

If anyone would like to help, the scene can be downloaded here:

http://www.macgeek.org/jdrama/test/utsr_ep03_translate01.mpg

It's really small, about 3.9MB, MPEG-1 format, 23 seconds. There are two people in this: Yuki (the girl) and Masaya. Koyuki left just before this segment (basically, she called Masaya an a**hole, then ran off). Knowing her, I'd imagine Yuki is saying something stupid to Masaya.

Appreciate the help!!!! Smile
