Canon PowerShot SD900 Digital Elph Reviewed (Verdict: 10-Megapixel Excellence)
In a huge 6217-word review that's practically long enough to be published into a book, Let'sGoDigital took a highly-detailed look at the Canon IXUS 900Ti (known in the US as the Canon PowerShot SD900 Digital ELPH) compact digital camera, and gave it a big thumbs-up. After reading the review for the better part of the morning, we can say that the reviewers liked almost everything about the pretty little bauble, especially its 10-megapixel sensor with its fast one-second startup time, its attractively rounded titanium body and its high-end build quality. They sum it up like this:
The Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti is without question a typical IXUS camera. Although a simple, effortless operation is the most important thing, they leave no doubts about the fact that there is much more to a camera than looks alone. Innovative technique is repeatedly used to increase the level of ease and user-friendliness.
I missed Engadget's first reporting of this back in May, but a company called Eye-Fi has found a way to embed 802.11g wireless onto one of those tiny SD memory cards. The Eye-Film card is designed to work with digital cameras so you can wirelessly download photos or transfer them to an Internet site without connecting to a computer.
Pardon me, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. Wi-Fi on an SD card? What's next, Wikipedia on a Triscuit?
Engadget's now reporting that this technology is in beta, so hopefully it will be coming out soon. They say that Eye-Film will work with "qualified" existing digital camera models without upgrade, but there is currently no public list of makes and models. Wi-Fi on the SD has been tried before, but always with a larger than standard size, making them awkward or incompatible with most camera's tiny memory compartments.
The Eye-Film card is being designed to fit within SD dimensions, and a similar CompactFlash card is next in the pipeline. The company's site says that while digital cameras are the primary focus for Eye-Film, the company is taking PDA and SmartPhone functionality "very seriously." Of course, if you don't want to wait for this feature and are in the market for a new digital camera, check out these Wi-Fi-capable digital cameras.
