There'll be 76 Japanese students coming to my school next weekend. I'm one of the students who welcome them at the entrance. What can I say to welcome them?

I think "irashaimase" means "welcome" in Japanese, right? Someone correct me, I'm not sure. But how do you say it during an occasion like the one stated above?

TQ.

konnichiwa...

sorry for replying late... as for your Q. i think the "youkoso" is the best word to use. from my opinion "irashaimase" is commonly used to welcome customers...

I would say "Youkoso". "Irasshaimase" is like, when you walk into a store and the shopkeepers greet you. I heard when I went to someone's house once they said "Irasshai!" but it wasn't a formal situation. I don't know if that was strange for her to say or not.

That looks a little strange. Sweat I've seen 悤Ƃ (悤킪) in a Japanese book before but I don't know how it would be for a school. Maybe 悤wZ (悤킪)? Sorry, I could be really wrong on that but something seemed strange....but I'm also not familiar with that kanji's use other than in Sweat

How's your Japanese?

Definitely like meeting new people and friends off the bat through the English Institute at the college I used to attend and also through their summer bridge program.

I'm the type who tries to meet every student and have a conversation with them. But I always start out with the ͂߂܂āB@
PlfC łB@h@낵B"Hajimemashite. Watashi wa Kennedy desu. Dozo yoroshiku."@

I then wait to hear their response. If it's English, then I can continue my conversation in English and it's all good. If it's in Japanese, I'll communicate in Japanese but if they look like they are shy, then I'll usually say something to break the ice.

Hope you have a great experience in making new friends.

PlfC

"moshi moshi" is polite way to say "hello" when you answer the phone. A very polite thing to do would be to say "moshi moshi, (your surname) de gozaimasu", kind of like saying "hello, (your surname) residence" in English. It sounds very formal. It would also be polite to say "Moshi moshi, (your surname) desu", which is like saying in English, "Hello, this is (your surname)".

And a very polite way to end the convesation "[de wa] shitsurei shimasu", which basically means "[Well then] I'm being rude (and hanging up now)".

I've made this thread sticky because lately, there've been too many new topic posts on just one particular question regarding the Japanese language.
I'm just trying to consolidate questions into just one thread.
So if anyone just has one question that needs to be answered, please post it in here.

Thanks.

Sad I don't want to offensive or anything but if someone REALLY wants to learn conversational Japanese than why don't they get a book or attend a class (like at a comm. college). I tried learning without a class but it was so worthless (relatively) when I entered my first class. I not only know how to use grammer correctly but I know the little nuances of the language as well. Also I think there is no excuse to not learn Kata/Hirogana since it really is easy to learn both systems quickly. Then again I realize not everybody has time to put into it like a student does. So what I'm saying here is that "we" (and I mean the people that are helping others with their "translations", not that I have helped much since I'm relatively new to the boards) aren't really helping at all. All that we're doing is creating a dependancy for the others to come here and have us help them out when all they really need is a solid foundation of elemantery japanese (reading AND writing...but I suppose that if they're not that serious they can get away with knowing the rules to romanji). so that they can look up whatever it is they need. Of course I'm not against helping out anyone that just needs an answer to a question or a quick translation (like in the above posts about ending a letter).

P.S. I understand sometimes I come off harsh and mean but after lurking for a bit that's just what I see. I really hope I'm not missing the point of this forum entirely.
