Having a teacher would be nice, but cheap as they are, my school doesn't even offer a Japanese language course Grumble Self-studying requires a great deal of discipline and will, both of which I don't really have right now. The only thing I've done recently is watch dramas after another Sweat

i haven't looked into taking a course yet, but i suppose i should do that.
they have courses at the local JC-Junior college.

I bought a book yesterday, on "Adventures in Japanese" volume #1.
The studying begins, trying to keep myself accountable is going to be tough.

I am trying to build up my Hiragana skills, and vocabulary, so that the next time i use it during my next visit to Japan, i will have the knowledge to do so.

Pierce college is now offering Japanese. I'm trying to get in the elementary class right now. There are already 19 standbys and I can't register until the 18th.

Here's a listing Japanese courses offered at all the colleges in the LA Community College District.

i never got around to taking a class at the local college, but i am going to continue to study Japanese on my own from various books and cd's. It is a challenge to motivate myself on a regular basis, and that lack of accountability, but one motvation is my upcoming trip to Japan.

did you ever get into that japanese class? how's your japanese skills? i am trying to build up my conversation skills, vocab., and the hiragana character strokes.

I am currently also studying on my own. In fact I wouldnt call it really studying (I would call it more, achieving Japanese knowledge in a fun way, without any stress). I have learned all hiragana and katakana for quite some time now, and some basic grammar stuff. Now I read trough some vocabulary lists (this having my preference, cause I would need to have a bigger amount of vocabulary knowledge to survive in Japan this summer), and many times there are words in doramas I recognize and sometimes they stick in my mind in that way..

I an slightly considering whether I should do Japanologie starting from next year (I will graduate from high school in a few months). Shure it will be very fun for me to study it, and my Japanese would improve a lot. But I feel its also a waste of time. Maybe it would be bether to study something else which is more interesting for jobhunters, and as I have planned now already, go study Japanese in Japan for maybe 1 or 2 years (maybe this may even have a bigger effect than studying Japanologie - not only language but also culture and all - in my own country).

Intresting. I have a Japanese Teacher but as i found out too quick the class speed was much too slow for me. I just started self teaching myself with the textbook. I use Adventures in Japanese 1 text book. I recommend if your gonna self teach yourself maybe find a Japanese friend who knows English somewhere. They can probably teach you slangs that the books don't. Bleah. I learned that you don't always have to say desu after a sentence lol.

I think adding the desu part at the end makes the sentence somewhat polite. You don't have to have it, but it depends on who you're talking to I guess Smile

If you don't find learning Japanese is fun, it'll be even harder for you. :/ Of course there are hard parts in any language, but if you like the language, and want to really learn Japanese, you'll manage Wink

"ne" at the end of sentence is kinda ",do you agree?"
Usually the end of japanese sentece, there are a lot of particle.
They express confidense, need of agreement.... etc.

I believe the literal translation is something like "please be good to me" but is generally regarded as "Pleased to meet you"
