call me shallow, but the two male leads bother me. I have seen both of them acting before, but i could never bring myself to like Tanabe. As for Oikawa, he's okay i guess. Anyone knows Japanese could you tell me what role Tanabe play? He better not play Bae's role.

If we can make changes to the pairings, there sure are many that I'd like to change for spring season.

There's just not much to look forward to. bleh

Thanks jade_frost for the translation. It's so obvious spring season is a battle for the young actors. I don't care for the majority of them, but honestly, I'm excited for spring season because the storylines for most of the dramas sound quite promising: Liar Game, Sexy voice and Robo, Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Go... Let's pray the dramas will be as good as the impression the synopsis gave Sweat .

Dramas explore animal-human ties

Norifumi Kawamura / Yomiuri Shimbun Staff Writer

Fuji TV has been working on two hourlong dramas, both featuring human-animal relationships based on true stories. One of them, Taro to Jiro: Hansei Zaru to Boku no Yume, focuses on the life of Taro Murasaki, who is known for his comical "sarumawashi" show featuring Japanese monkeys. The other, Kaijoken Musashi, stars Riko Narumi as Kumiko, a middle school student with spinal muscular atrophy, and a service dog named Musashi.

While the date for Kaijoken Musashi is currently being rescheduled, Taro to Jiro, will be aired on March 17.

In the 1980s, Murasaki became popular along with his Japanese macaque, Jiro, who would comically bow its head whenever he heard the command "Hansei!" meaning self-reflection. The drama focuses on his efforts to revive traditional sarumawashi shows, an entertainment form that practically vanished after the end of World War II, and also on his struggle to come to terms with the untimely death of Jiro.

Taro to Jiro's producer, Miwako Kurihara, said, "What I needed for the drama was for Murasaki's and the monkey's facial expressions to convey their genuine love for each other."

Kenji Sakaguchi, who plays Murasaki in Taro to Jiro, started training to perform shows with a male Japanese macaque, named Hikaru, two weeks before the filming started. The actor spent as much time with the monkey as possible, feeding him his favorite foods, including blueberries and yogurt.

Instructed by a professional sarumawashi performer, the actor worked on getting the monkey to perform acrobatics, which are usually the highlight of a sarumawashi show.

During a Feb. 15 shoot at a Buddhist temple in Kanagawa Prefecture, Sakaguchi succeeded in making Hikaru jump through a hoop while he himself was beating a drum.

"I love him [Hikaru] as much as if he were my son. I feel our ties are strengthening every day," Sakaguchi said.

When he takes a break, the actor can always be seen holding Hikaru and grooming it.

"I want to convey [to viewers of the drama] that humans and animals can bond with each other even more strongly than humans do in interpersonal relationships," Sakaguchi said.

In Kaijoken Musashi, Kumiko, who experiences increasing inconvenience in her daily life as she loses muscular strength due to the development of her condition, comes into contact with the labrador, which renews her enthusiasm for life.

In Japan, there are only 36 known partner dogs helping disabled people live their daily lives.

In the TV drama, four dogs--including service dogs from the Yokohama-based Japan Service Dog Training Center--play the various dog roles in the drama.

"For promoting service dogs, it's very meaningful to feature the reality of service dogs in a TV drama," said Shuji Motooka, an official at the center.

During breaks from filming, Narumi, who herself has a pet dog at home, often plays with the animal stars using a ball to help build good relationships with them.

Producer Sekiya Masayuki said: "Her smile is so special whenever she is with the dogs. I'm sure we are going to have much better images [for the drama] than we had hoped for."

While surprised at the dogs' intelligence, Narumi said: "I think even the dogs get tired after working all day. I wish I could take off their bags [attached to their backs] just once every now and then so I could play with them to their hearts' content."

Commenting on the drama's impact, Narumi said: "Kumiko and Musashi are good partners who need each other. I hope many people will develop a better understanding of service dogs through the drama."

Haha. Spot on.

From Japan Times:

On Friday and Saturday night at 9 p.m., Nihon TV will present separate drama specials based on the work of William Shakespeare. The word "based" is used rather loosely here.

"The King's Heart" (Friday) takes "King Lear" as its model. When a businessman falls ill he makes his three daughters an offer. Whichever one agrees to take care of him will inherit his chain of supermarkets. The two older daughters fight over which one will live with dad, but the younger daughter wants nothing to do with the competition.

"Romeo and Juliet" (Saturday) is about a female college student and an injured young man she meets on the street. They fall in love, not knowing that the girl's police detective father is in the midst of a manhunt to find the young man's physician father, who is wanted for murder.
