Joy Luck Club is a very good movie, but it stereotyped all Chinese men as being conniving and evil. Very stilted view, IMO....

Hehe! I was plannin to see it on saturday evening but a "mishap" occured before I was about to leave the house. A doorbell rang and I opened the door. There was a man in front of the door, he was workin for a war veteran society and was askin for a donation. A "solidarity collection" campaign was going on. I didn't have the nerve to decline him and I went to get my wallet. There was a 10 euro note in it, didn't have a change either. So I decided to donate the 10 euros.
So no money, no movie for tonight. In the beginning I felt a bit distressed, "loosin" 10 euros. In the end I actually felt relieved for having a chance to help the war veterans Smile Must not forget them.
Anyways, the movie isn't going anywhere. I'll prolly go to see it within a few weeks.

I just about lost it with laughter at the scenes where Bill Murray is filming his Suntory whiskey commercial. The director was explaining what he wanted Bill's character to do, and really going at in Japanese. After a while, he turns to the interpreter, and says 'please translate,' to which the interpreter then turns to Bill and says 'He says he wants you to look at the camera... with intensity.'

Of course, the audience knows that the director said more than that. What's even more funny is if you understand Japanese, and/or have lived here and worked with interpreters before.

Heh heh.

Check out Bill Murray in Rushmore - he's pretty good in that too.

Rushmore was a great film. I hope with movies such as rushmore and Lost in Translation we can see Murray in other serious roles. He's a pretty good serious actor. Lost In Translation was certainly a well shot film, though the plot itself was nothing terribly original.

Lucy Liu, off the radar in a month?

It's already been a very long month, man.

I first noticed Liu back in '96 when she was a regular on Rhea Perlman's Sitcom, "Pearl".

She took a nothing role, classmate of Perlman's, and flat out stole the show away from both Perlman, and Malcolm 'freakin' McDonald!

She hasn't been out of work since. She was the breakout from "Ally McBeal" and those gawdawful "Charlie's Angels" movies have put her on the "A" list.

That's some flavor of the month.

And as far as her being "eye candy". Yup.

It was a figure of speech. But I do think she's the token Asian right now...

Way cool! We finally disagree!

I think she's amazing to look at.

And as for being the token Asian... I can't change your mind here. But the way I look at it, if she was still playing the poor Asian immigrant roles she took early on in stuff like episodes of ER... of if she got the part simply because they needed an Asian face, I'd agree with you.

But I look at the roles she's played over the last 6 or 7 years, and with the exception of "Kill Bill" those roles weren't "Asian specific".

I'll admit, they were "Hot Chick" specific. But not necessarily "Asian Hot Chick specific."

Anyway... it's good to disagree. It keeps the conversation going.

Uma Thurman's Japanese was terrible in Kill Bill...Lucy Liu was bad too but better at least (which is saying very little)

I can't wait for the DVD! I loved the Movie. I hope they have an alternate ending. The end was a little cheesy for my taste which is too bad considering how great the rest of the movie was. This will not stop me from running to the store to buy it.

Yeah, it was a Hollywood ending... But overall, still an excellent movie to own. Applaud Big Grin
