Having already read the English translation of the source by Seicho Matsumoto (Inspector Imanishi Investigates, for those who can read it; one of my favorite translations from Japanese) I wanted to make a few comparisons. I've been watching this series since it came out. I think about 6 episodes so far... First, while it seems the original was more from the point of view of the detective, this drama is clearly a story about Waga Eiryo. Also I have never read the book or seen the movie so I have nothing to compare it against but in my opinion the drama is top notch. Also the story seems quite natural even the in 21st century. I haven't thought to myself once "That type of stuff doesn't happen anymore." //SPOILER// At this point, they are on to Waga finally and have talked to him. There are still about 4 episodes to go though so I'll be interested to see what happens.

I've watched up to episode 7 of Pride now, and despite what some people are saying, I really do like it. A lot, in fact. The quality of the production job alone gets kudos, and Kimura and Takeuchi work very well together on screen (off screen is another issue, I guess).
Kimura's character (Halu) is a bit of a jerk, and the premise behind his relationship with Takeuchi's character (Aki) is...kind of unrealistic...but there are actual explanations/motivations given. They just come later in the story. Otherwise, the side stories and supporting cast are also pretty good (with the exception of one player who just gets on my nerves because he is so useless--very transparent plot device character).
Anyways, there really isn't a message behind the story but it is a nice character development piece. And like I said before, the production job is *great*. Excellently choreographed scenes and such, so I think there is good entertainment value.
The biggest complaint I have is in how they depict hockey. A *lot* of high sticking and excessive checking to make it seem more exciting, I guess... ^_^;
I just thought I'd plug it since FOB is supposed to be releasing a subbed version of episode 1 today, I think....
