That's always the best policy chiba-san. You can never be too polite.

If im not mistaken, the prefixes that can be used for women or girls are -chan (I think only for younger girls), -san and -sama (for married women)

Hm, confusing with all these honourifics and when to use them I'd stick with -san to be on the safe side, but I think I've read somewhere that calling a (close) friend -san, is somewhat impolite. Like you don't consider that person to be friend enough to be called -kun/-chan.... lol...

To clear up the question of using -kun for girls. kami_kaze answered this already a few pages back.

I was trying to find an article regarding the issue of "boku", but came across this one. It's interesting imho, so I wanted to share it.

Funny that females using "boku" has only come up in J-music lyrics... I'd still be interested in an opinion from a native Japanese though... Thanks to all those who commented anyhow.

Women should never us boku in any situation. Some pop singers use boku on purpose to sound ghetto. Some young girls also say boku among themselves to sound tough.
