Just done watching Gift. Interesting story, but it does nothing to disprove my impression that Kimutaku has a very limited set of facial expressions.

You mean Kimura is kind of like all the other historical HUGE stars like
Marlon Brando, James Dean, Gary Cooper, Robert Taylor, Clark Gable, Robert Mitchum etc etc. who all suffered from the same affliction - of being themselves in every role.
It's been my experience that greatness comes not from diversity but always being the comfortable same image of that star that makes me want to watch them endlessly. If any of the above greats had varied from what I had come to expect I would have lost interest in them instantly.
For me Kimura ranks with those greats and if he departs from the subtle facial expressions that say so much with so little effort, I would not watch him again. Applaud

I could have gone on endlessly.... Steve McQueen in wanted dead or alive and Chuck Connors in Rifleman. Two more great same expression actors as well as that other boring guy Clint Eastwood. Sweat

Brilliant choice! Abe was fantastic, as usual. Smitten

Yes Wynter, Beem is correct. "To blub" means "to cry". The word and its derivations are fairly well-used in England. It's quite an informal word, though.

Ahhhhh okies. I'm gonna try using it in a sentence sometime. Such a great sounding word.

We do disagree, but then, this is the sort of disagreement that I enjoy.

I can't count the number of nights I've spent in coffee houses, and bars, arguing about the differences in Olivier's courtly, chivalrous Henry V, compared to say... Branagh's "just one of the guys", portrayal of the part. Or Olivier's contemplative Hamlet, compared to Gibson's "action hero" version of the part. Or Olivier's dottering Lear compared to Scofield's furious performance.

But this is not the thread for this. Sorry folks.

Anyway...

Re: Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. Yup. 2 episodes in, and so far, so good. Ryoko is a pip.

And aside from the good looks, talent and success, I find myself identifying completely with Abe's character.

Geezer,

Disagreement, when cogently presented, is often stimulating. It certainly keeps the blood circulating in old farts like you and me.

Did you actually get an opportunity to see Olivier perform on stage? If so, that must have been a memorable experience.

Glad you're enjoying Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. Like I mentioned, the acting of the principal characters is excellent; heck, even the dog is good.

Don't spoil it for others, please... There's a thread for this drama, y'know.

Glad you're liking it. The big surprise for me was Yuki Natsukawa, I was thinking "Where the hell did she come from??? She's great!!!"
