Oh wow I loved this drama and I never wrote anything in this thread so I guess is never to late...
What can I say, is an amazing high school based story with many great little morals that we all should know about. The acting was quite amazing and yamapi was f'ing hilarious.
I wish there was some sort of second part to this story
Something interesting to point out. Didn't anyone (that seen Chakushin ari) noticed how maki (nobuta) plays the same character almost in a sense in the movie(except hangs herself..) and even some of the actors from Nobuta wo produce are in the same class with her in the movie hehe. _________________

YATTA!!! I finished watching all eps around last week but no time to post because of studies studies studies!!! NwP is the second Jdrama that got me hooked on!! (the first one being Gokusen). SUGOI!! I started to like YamaP more and more!!! First time I see him in GYM (Golf and Mike), I didnt like him much, because he didnt smile. But when I got to see NwP, I was just amazed at his acting skills and then I got to know more about him!! So bad...I didnt wish his b.d. on 9th April T_T Anyway, Happy Birthday!!
Kame is as good as ever. Adorable. I came to know of Maki in this drama....her eyes just like L though(from DeathNote) haha.....But then I realised Toda Erika (Mariko) was the one in DeathNote huhu ^^"
Why is everything related to other things? Well...anyway, I just love this drama plus with the theme song. Actually I watched this drama because I saw Seishun Amigo with translated sub and it was soooooo touchy! Fell for it ^-^ _________________

hey guys..i'm new..just started watching japanese dramas..hehe..and i was surprised that nobuta wo produce was way back in 2005..it didnt look so 2 years before..to me.i liked it..i thought the story is somewhat stereotypical of many other highschool-popularity-social life thing..but the twists made it interesting...i found it really worthwhile and life changing!
thumbs up to kazuya..(not really sure how to call him) he made shuji believable and alive...also to yamashita..i dont know if he has some signature role or acting..but he sure did play a crazy eccentric boy well (i love it when he laughs..cute!)

but for me, you should try My Boss My Hero, Seito Shokun and Gokusen
series..they're also school life dorama..
I sort of wanted to try Seito Shokun (because Hongo Kanata and Shirota Yuu are working together in this drama ) but I read a few bad reviews about it (like the cliche bad-students-setting happens again, it was just like Gokusen, etc), so I didn't. Do you recommend it?
That's why I like NwP. It's not your typical school life drama. _________________

I finished this drama like 6 weeks ago, but haven't had time to post about it cause i've been out of the country. I really enjoyed the show and loved the characters. It was only the 2nd dorama i've seen (im gonna start GTO tomorrow) and, to me, it didn't compare to One Litre of Tears, the first one I watched. Still, I thought it was a fun and cute show. I didn't cry NEARLY as much or feel as moved as with One Litre of Tears, but I still felt an attachment to the characters and got really into the show.
That being said, in my analysis of the show, there are a few significant flaws that set its bar lower and make it less substantial than One Litre of Tears in addition to the lighter-hearted, less heavy subject matter. (Sorry to keep comparing them even thought they're nothing alike, but they're the only 2 doramas i've seen.)
1) The character of Aoi was not sufficiently developed or explained. At the end of episode 10, I felt disappointed and looking back it seemed that the ending lines of episode 1, mentioning that "we would have to face real evil," or words to that effect, overpromising. I was hoping to get more background on Aoi to understand why she really hated Nobuta; the reasons provided in the show simply seemed unrealistic to me and didn't fully explain her hostility, and it seems rather contrived. It's too bad because it seemed like she had potential to be a really fascinating character.
NOW, that being said, I felt like I missed something with the whole suicide dream that all four of them had. There is certainly something missed by wathcing these shows with subtitles and lacking real understanding of Japanese culture, so I may be missing something.
If I did miss or misinterpret something about Aoi and the whole suicide plot element, PLEASE tell me.
2) The plotline of Akira's hopeless crush on Nobuta and the inklings of romance between Nobuta and Shuji seemed to diminish with proper exploration. There were too many moments; Akira not fearing the man's germs when Nobuta's date won't touch him after the man's heart attack, and then, later Nobuta's punching him and deriding his video, and her hug of Shuji ALL filled me with excitement and anticipation over what would come of their 3-way friendship and how romance might play a part. However, these kind of seemed like dead hooks after Nobuta's insistence that she does not favor either one as a friend more than the other (I think this is the last episode, with the good luck charm she doesn't want to chop in half.)
Again, people who speak Japanese, etc., please tell me if there's something I'm missing or getting wrong. I just got the impression that she clearly liked (or even loved) Shuji more than Akira, and her rejection of Akira as a romance interest seemed a little abrupt. I'm not arguing for a romance happily-ever-after, but I just wish it had been definitively addressed as it was in One Litre of Tears (Love Letter) which was brilliantly written and acted, and accordingly, was one of the most painful parts of the show. (I cried QUITE a bit over that.)
3) This is pretty minor, but just as I felt overpromised by the foreboding remarks about evil in the first episode that weren't REALLY explored, I also felt overpromised by the early flashback to Nobuta's childhood. I don't even remember the significance of it because it was NEVER revisisted and never became an issue. Maybe I'm forgetting something, but I just thought that was a little disappointing.
All throughout the show, I thought we would learn some dark secret about Nobuta's past (she did, after all, contemplate suicide); all it turned out to be was that she was a depressed, socially awkward girl.
Maybe my perception has to do with differring views of suicide in America and Japan, maybe not.
So, Nobuta wo Produce fans (especially those who like it more than One Litre of Tears), tell me what you think of my criticisms.
I could be totally off-base and wrong, but I'd love to hear your thoughts.

SPOT ON, (Specially on #2) agree 100%.
As for number 1, the suicide dream thing. Maybe you should know that there are over 40,000+ (I get TVJapan here on the states and be watching the news, and the numbers are actually higher but not to far from that number) case of suicide in Japan every year X_X. Furthermore, the dream was just a symbolism in the story and is quite "ironic" one could say because Horikita Maki (Nobuta) did that one movie "Chakushin ari final" where she plays a suicide victim (school girl aswel). They finish it off with the mark on the floor like something had happened in reality and not just a dream, (Japanese people believe in ghost way more than people in the states and thats for sure hehe). As you watch more dramas you will see recurring ghost/spirit themes, as well as suicide. I've seen so many I think I desynthesized by it already. However, they hardly ever ruin a drama at all, specially dramas like 1 liter of tears, nobuta wo produce etc.
Wish I could give more details and ideas but it's been a while I've seen the drama + I'm in a hurry right now. I might edit the post later on, or reply a second time if any other ideas regarding what you mentioned comes to mind.
Note: hehe, my first drama was also 1 liter of tears and since then, I have actually quit almost watching any TV just to watch Japanese dramas lol (as to why I think I seen so many) You mentioned you going to watch GTO. While my suggestion might not mean anything to you, I didn't like GTO that much (compared to some which swear is the best drama ever..) and if you looking for something very similar(maybe too similar lol) to 1 liter of tears then Taiyou No Uta might be the one (is not 100% perfect like 1 liter of tears but oh boy is once again tragic, and has the same actress so you might feel an attachment to that from the start)
If you want to get out of the tragic drama genre then I totalllllllyyyyy recommend Nodama Cantabile and My Boss My Hero, anyone who says those 2 dramas are bad, just needs to get shot (2 of the greatest funny, romantic, and exciting dramas I have everrrr seen) you can't go wrong with any of those 2 choices.
Just my 2 cents. _________________

Yeah, I've heard the suicide rate in Japan was quite high.
In America, suicide is seriously one of the most looked down upon things someone can do. It's viewed as selfish, cowardly, and the most pathetic thing a person can do. Regardless of religion, most Americans are extremely ashamed and scornful of suicide.
I had a friend who killed himself (relapse into depression without medication) and his parents, Roman Catholics who deeply loved him, simply COULD NOT believe that it was suicide despite all the forensic evidence and everything, and of course did not mention cause of death in his obituary.
Click on button to reveal/hide spoiler:
I still feel like I don't understand the symbolism of Aoi's suicide dream-- coming from an American background, my immediate feeling is that there should be some elaboration on her background for why she did it. But that's just another cultural lost-in-translation problem like I talked about.

Hm, I'll keep that in mind. I haven't started GTO yet.
And I definitely do want to watch the other Erika Sawajiri one. I really love her as an actress and she might be the most beautiful person I have ever seen. To be honest tho, I kind of want to save it. That's the same reason I haven't watched Long Vacation, which I heard was one of the very best, either.
I kind of want to go through a few I know I'll enjoy before getting to the real gems.

Then def go for my boss my hero or nodame cantabile.
You not only going to find it romantic in it's own unique way but F'ING hilarious! Anyone will agree with that hehe. Is also a change of genre and style which is worth to explore.
As for Aya (erika sawajiri) beh, I felt in love with that girl when I seen her on 1 liter of tears (not to mention it was my first drama as well) but I lost a lot of respect for her after all the recent issues with her, her attitude, and she even looks much different now. (Guess I always expected her to look simple, and very down to earth...) _________________

Never heard of that drama. I'll check it out soon.
What's that about Erika's recent issues? I heard something about arrogance or whatever, but what can we expect from a beautiful and privledged actress....
And recent look changes? All I've noticed is longer hair and sometimes more makeup. Still astonishingly beautiful, the makeup is just unnecessary (maybe a LITTLE bit detrimental.)
I hope she doesn't get rid of the tooth gap. It is too cute.
I'll talk about how quickly I fell in love with her after starting One Litre of Tears on that show's board.
Anyway, I was trying to remember, what was the exact reason given for Aoi hating Nobuta? I just remember something that seemed to amount to jealousy, but I'd appreciate if someone could refresh my memory as to what it was exactly.
