In singapore, combat personnel basically have a night offs 1x a wk n the wkend off. bascially u book out on saturday morning or afternoon n come back by sunday nite. this is like the median army lifestyle but there are worse ones n better ones of corse.
Singapore? we are a small dot on the map of the world n we cant trust any country to come to our aid especially since we are a chinese predominant country in the middle of 200 million muslims. Despite the current peace, it is not uncommon for these countries to take a 'big brother' attitude to us. This is unacceptable in the affairs of a soverign state. As we have no natural resources, especially water, we have to be ready to take action if our survival is threatened by cut of water supplies or naval embargo. So therefore we have built on paper, the most well equipped armed forces in the region. Basically we are Israel part 2 but with less aminosity among the region.
therefore despite being one of the smallest country in the world, our military budget is probably the envy of any non-first-world country.

the idea of a conscript military came in abt 1966/7 when our then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and the Defence Minister, Mr. Goh Keng Swee both decided that with such a small population, we couldnt spare 100,000 males to form a regular army. And the Chinese has traditionally disliked the army as a professional career cos of many factors. After getting Israeli army consultants, our army was started based on the israeli model. the first enlistment was in 1967. n the rest is history. all medically fit males have to serve national service.

At the moment, I'm just feeling numb about my work. It's boring and more or less same old thing (must be bcause of economy decline). But I gotta stick with it for a while because it pays off my bills..

I'm currently sick but still have incoming emails about my work and gotta reply it (meaning no matter how sick I am as long as I can still think and outstanding works are still loaded..I gotta do my job).

my major is advertising but i dont feel i wanna work in that kind field of work related to my major...
more interest in entertainment environment such as magazines...
i guess i like writing...

wow, sounds like you really like what you are doing. communication/entertainment/PR also as a CEO you must wear a lot of hats. By the time you get home, you prolly don't have enough quality time w/ your family.

I have to send two of my client's new revised business cards and stationary...and what do you know...my sbcyahoo DSL is down until late this afternoon (was down late last night). Definitely will miss deadline. Uggh... Man, I don't realize how much I depend on broadband.

Well, if anything...at least I found out that SBCYahoo DSL users have a backup dial account. Geez..haven't used backup in ages.

Can't really do any work because the files are too large to send via dialup and a lot of my stuff is time sensitive

Do your superiors treat you with respect or like pee-ons? Since this has been going on for several decades, I'm guessing many guys are ready for it since it's mandatory. Do you get your typical guy who tries to escape the country to avoid military?

But I agree, that is an awesome Sysadmin job. I currently work as a Systems Technician for an Atlanta based broadband ISP. We're not good enough to be a System Admin... we're like the admins' peons. Anyhow, if a box goes down, it is our job to notify the admins. Since we're in a 24/7 environment, it doesn't matter what time of the day it is, we need to page out to admins. They really hate getting paged at 3:00 AM in the morning to restart a box or whatever. But what's crappy about my job is that they sometimes take that out on us. Even though we're doing what we're supposed to be doing, they sort of resent that. Kinda leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth. But we gotta do it. Sometimes we'd page out the same admin multiple times throughout the night, for many consecutive days. And they take that out on us. And if we screw up, it's even more crap.

I guess my main gripe about my job is that I don't have any sense of accomplishment.

for someone who was born with perhaps a quarter of a brain. she's been here 25 years and still can't speak the f'n language!!! drives me nuts!

fortunately, i can figure my boss out most of the time, as can my co-worker. but only because she and i both have foreign-born parents. the one white guy here who didn't have that advantage didn't last here, 'cause he failed ESP 101 (sarcasm). sorry, frustrating day!

I like my job.

I'm currently a senior systems engineer for Citigroup Japan. I troubleshoot and fix a variety of network and pc issues for different Citigroup companies. Basically, I get paid to do my hobby, which is nice, as always.

Couple this with the fact that I am living in Tokyo, and I get to watch all the anime and TV dramas when they air on TV, and I'm just happy as a clam.

Unfortunately, my job, as Boltar-san says, sometimes mean that I get paged at 3am in the morning to rush into work to fix / supervise several issues. Except that I don't take it out on the person who pages / phones me... usually I'm too groggy and incoherent at 3am to yell at another person.

Reminds me when I got into high technology PR, I was so into technology...the things coming out of Japan and the cool gadgetry...and I remember when I was interviewed I was talking about how much I love technology. Then it came to business of promoting technology...but not the technology I love or things I dreamed of having but the things inside those gadgets that make them work and so forth... chips to semiconductors...oh, man... I like technology, but certain aspects of technology...the nice, cool looking electronics and what they do and why it's cool to have but not so enthusiastic about promoting the important circuitry of what makes those gadgets work.

I gotcha. You're talking about the marketing aspects, neh?

When I say the business of engineering, I mean the schedules and management that make engineering frustrating and exhausting. These people don't know squat about design and they're the ones planning and setting schedules. Pretty idiotic, if you ask me.

Hehe...I know nothing about engineering but what from what my brother tells me. He gets into clashes with management because he is more into management and bettering relationships with people and he feels many engineers lack communication and people skills. It's pretty interesting because he kicks ass in his job but he's seen as the rebellious one because he is direct with his bosses about how if they learn how to communicate and be more people oriented than 100% analytical minded they can make it a better workplace for everyone...hehe...

Did that several hours ago. Despite of thinking that work is crap and all..at the end of the day, I always say to myself "IT PAYS YOUR BLOODY BILLS, WOMAN!"

I love my job! (although it's temporary) It's the people who works with me that ruins it! They're all acting like a bunch of babies! I have 2 co-workers who are at each other's throat because one got promoted...the other one feels that she should have gotten the position...blah blah blah (long story)...and all they do is talk smack about each other...trying to put me in the middle. They're both my friends, and I'm not on anyone's side. I think this is ridiculous and should definitely stop! Feels like highschool all over. If they want to get each other fired...FINE...just don't put me in the middle...cause frankly, I don't care.

On the other hand, I love my job ...cause we don't have supervisors/managers always on our back, telling us what to do. We all know what needs to get done...so we take the initiative to do them. And if there's nothing to do...we just chill...and do crossword puzzle! hehe

lol sounds like something that happened at my work place. Except my colleagues just decided to not address each other directly, I didn't notice it til around 2 or 3 months in and these people never talked to each other but they sit beside each other.

Well I personally don't hate my job, its not too bad, maybe its because I'm at a junior position (not much is expected of me) and I don't expect alot from myself Too easy goin for my own good.

Sup everybody. looks like most of you are in the engineering/tech field. I took information sytems in college but it didn't quite work out that way. I am now in premier banking and recently just got employed by my company's investment affiliate. Basically, I have two jobs under one roof. My title (pay's decent) and the suit means squat though, all I am is a glorified bank teller. Except I have to do more sucking up, and what's worse, I make more money for someone else than I do for myself! *grrrrrr....* To top it off, the market area manager and the region president know me by name... which has its advantages and disadvantages, I guess. It's easier to move up since they know me, but then if I mess up once, it is ALL OVER. *sigh*... oh well... I guess I just have to avoid getting caught slackin, and of course postin on jdorama! .

**Disclaimer: I do love my job, don't get me wrong. It's a really good feeling being able to interact and learn with and from different people. some days are actually pretty hilarious, since I have no idea what type of insane rich dood I'll be dealing with next .
