I've been to Tokyo a couple of time in late Autumn/Winter, and it wasn't so bad. But if I have the chance to visit Japan in winter I'd really like to go to Otaru (Hokkaido) - this is where the movie Love Letter was filmed.

are you sure you don't want to go there for the roast suckling goose?

In Hokkaido no matter whether it is summer, there's still snow...

i suggest visiting this fine waffle pastry place, a small little place, but oh so good waffle pastries for 157 yen a piece. I've been here three times, during each visit to Japan, '03, '05, and this July of this year, '07...that is how much i like this place, check it out.

Yep absolutely delicious, albeit the Belgian name, itLs not Belgian but the "wafferus" are yummy! ThereLs also one Manneken in Kyoto trainstation. In love

yup i'm sure part genetics but also due to the fact that they don't drink 44oz buckets known as Big Gulps and supersize the living crap out of every food item they eat....let's admit that japanese cuisine for the most part is dayem healthy...all the veggies and fish (which we might not eat at japanese restaurants typically...but then again the average family doesn't eat sushi every night either).....even when they do eat int'l foods they don't have ginormous portions....too expensive and not the japanese way if you will...

and lest we forget! ppl walk there.....a lot! in america we have drive thru starbucks.....

Yup.

We eat big portions, we're lazy as hell, and we don't exercise.

They also WALK to most places, whereas in countries as large as ours, we're always in cars.

Yeah, it'd be cool to visit Japan in the Winter, but I don't think I could deal with the cold: I'd rather be walking around Japan in shorts and a tee, rather than bundled up like an eskimo. Sweat

Shorts and tee won't help much in the summer. It's usually sweltering in July and Aug. All you'll feel like doing is staying at your hotel. Even in the evening. BTW, do not come to Japan during Obon (2nd week of August) if you plan to do any traveling within the country. Trains and highways are packed beyond capacity. And don't go to Kyoto in the summer, it's worse than Kyoto. Hokkaido might be nice in summer. Haven't done that yet.

Tokyo winters are not very cold, rarely reaches 0 C. Kind of like Seattle winters without the rain. Actually the skies are usually clear in winter. And the snow in Nagano is world class powder. Think of being in a ryotenburo (outside onsen surrounded by snow) with a cup of sake and a nightsky with a million stars.

IMO, the best times to visit Japan are Spring and Autumn because the weather is perfect and there are great events (hanami and kouyou, resp.) to see. For more info, visit this site: http://www.japan-guide.com/

I can deal with sweltering... It's the cold that's a deal breaker. bleh

With any luck, the Q-man and I will be in Japan to chase maids in May-June. Beaten
