I loved the series hehe
On topic: I read the latest Japan book by fellow Belgian Amelie Nothomb - what a disappointment! Her first Japan book "Fear and Trembling" was about her experience working as a Westerner in a Japanese corporation but her latest effort (which has yet to be published in English) is just about her having a Japanese boyfriend while living in Japan. Totally average!

You don't see much Asian guys going out with a Caucasian girl (I've seen only 3 couples so far. The 1st time I've seen one, I couldn't believe my eyes that they were walking hand in hand on the other side of the street. I walked straight into a lamppost. Beaten )

Any who... it seems she wanted to earn more dough. This could have easily been incorporated into her previous book.

True! I remember this one TV show in Japan about a Swedish girl (perhaps Norvegian) marrying into a Japanese family. This is so exceptionally rare in Japan that they make a documentary out of this.

I'm still reading Cold Mountain, which is so profound and heavy that I find myself reading pages over just to really feel the main character.

At the same time I'm reading The Chrysalids, which I'm teaching to my Grade 9s.

Pretty much. I see Asian girl + Caucasian guy couple almost everyday. In fact, maybe a few times a day. The opposite tho, only 3 times so far. I don't know why. Head Scratch

Just because you're reading up on Nazi history doesn't mean you're a nazi, so no worries there. Though, Hitler wasn't really that strong. Taking on Russia and declaring war on the US after Pearl Harbor broke his neck. It was just a matter of time. The incredible masses of human material from Russia and the incredible industrial output from the US... scary combination. Really scary. Additionally, one thing people always forget when they ramble about the strong German Wehrmacht is: they were still dependant on horses (massively) and the large number of tanks was not as large as it seemed, because Panzer 1s were counted as normal tanks as well (Panzer 1 was extremely small and armed with only two machine guns, completely worthless on a modern battlefield when pitching against T-34s, Pershings or even M-4s.)

I'm currently reading "Japan at War - An oral history" by Haruka Taya Cook and Theodore F. Cook, where they interviewed survivors of the war, civilian and military.

One story was particularly funny. They interviewed a former officer of the 5th Rail Regiment and he told them how he and his regiment came to Burma. Well, they were given 6,000 Yen advance payment. So, the officers bought 24,000 bottles of beer, thinking that it would get them and their 600 men from Ujina, where they departed, to Rangoon.

Well, they thought wrong. The 24,000 bottles lasted until they reached Taiwan. There they restocked their alcohol, but they were dry again when they reached Singapore, where they had to resupply AGAIN. When they finally reached Rangoon, they had still 2-3 bottles per head.

We're they fighting or partying? Head Scratch

That might explain a lot of the atrocities if they were drunk all the time.
