All About Our House (Minna no Ie) is one of the three theatrical movies that Koki Mitani both wrote and directed. Imo it's a very good movie--done with the usual Mitani style and wit.
It's about a young couple who decide to build a house. Trouble ensues when the hip young designer of the house who is heavily influenced by the modern western style quarrels constantly with the grizzled head carpenter who is obstinate about following the traditional Japanese style.
One of the best things about this film is seeing the great character actor Kunie Tanaka in the role of the carpenter. He's been in some terrific movies and dorama series in his 40+year career. I think the first movie I saw him in was Kurosawa's Sanjuro.
Ah yes, he's that droopy dog-eyed actor that I've seen in so many films and dramas... And never knew his name.

Ah! This is where multiple language titles gets me in trouble.
Thanks shin2. Without your description I didn't recognize it, but I did see Minna no Ie just a couple of months ago.
It wasn't my favorite. I guess because it reminded me too much of "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House".
The only joke I really remember from "Minna no Ie" is the moment when Karasawa, the interior designer turned architect handed Kunie Tanaka the crapenter the painting he'd done of the house he wanted to build.
The idea of the painting was hilarious. But the look on Tanaka's face had me rolling.
But aside from that... not much else struck me about the movie. _________________

has anyone seen the movie Udon? Is it more drama or comedy? Worth watching?
Well, it's a little of both, probably more drama than comedy, but it does have it's funny parts. I liked it. The ending was a little bit too long and drawn out.

Another Kurosawa remake, MatsuJun to star
Sun, October 28, 2007 (7:21pm EDT)
Akira Kurosawa's 1958 film "The Hidden Fortress" ("Kakushi Toride no San Akunin") is getting a remake, directed by special effects specialist Shinji Higuchi. This version will star Arashi member Jun Matsumoto in his first jidaigeki role, with a supporting cast that includes popular actress Masami Nagasawa.
The original film starred Toshiro Mifune as the defeated general Rokurota trying to secretly escort a princess and her wealth to safety. Along the way, he is joined in the journey by two peasants. In Higuchi's version, the story's protagonist is the peasant Takezo (played by Matsumoto), rather than the general.
Masami Nagasawa plays the role of the princess, while Hiroshi Abe plays Rokurota. According to Sports Hochi, comedian Daisuke Miyagawa is also part of the cast, and Kazuki Nakashima is handling the adaptation of the script.
The movie reportedly has a budget of 1.5 billion yen. Filming starts next month and lasts until the end of the year, with theatrical release set for May 10, 2008.

There are times for sarcasm, and times to just flat out throw mud balls.
I still haven't gotten over the fact that some people actually liked old Beat's Zatoichi. And the fact that they are doing a female version with Haruka Ayase has destroyed what little faith I had left. _________________

Sacrilege.
